Chapter 178 Four Times the Temptation
Bella's face was streaked with tears as she shook her head. "I'm tired. I'm really desperate. Maybe I'll never know the truth about what happened to my dad. Maybe the truth isn't that important. Beck is right; I just need to know that my dad was a good man, right? Nothing else matters."
Anna watched Bella's tears of despair and couldn't help but feel heartbroken. She hugged her tightly, not knowing how to comfort her.
Anna just held her, repeating over and over, "It will be okay. It will be okay, Bella. Everything will get better. We will find out what happened to your dad. You have to believe that justice may be delayed, but it will never be absent."
Anna held Bella, comforting her repeatedly. "The world is so big, someone out there knows the truth. If we can't find it in a year, we'll take ten years. If ten years isn't enough, we'll take twenty. I refuse to believe we won't find it before we die. So, Bella, you mustn't break down first. Otherwise, no one will be able to clear your dad's name."
Bella gradually calmed down under Anna's comfort.
Yes, if they couldn't find the truth in a year, they'd take ten years. If ten years wasn't enough, she'd take twenty. She wouldn't let Lucas carry the stigma for the rest of her life.
But that would take a long time.
Once Bella had composed herself, she and Anna left. Anna drove because she was worried about Bella's state.
Just after they turned a corner, Bella kept looking back.
Anna observed her and asked, "What's wrong?"
Bella immediately said, "Do you feel like that black Mercedes behind us has been following us?"
Anna glanced in the rearview mirror and frowned. "I don't think so. Are you overthinking it? This isn't a movie."
Bella, teased by Anna, didn't pay much attention to it. Maybe she was just overthinking.
When Anna dropped Bella off at the company, she looked at the building. Micah's new company occupied the 26th to 30th floors, four floors in total.
Anna remarked, "I didn't realize Micah was so capable. He started a new company so quickly."
Bella smiled and said, "Yes, and this company is twice the size of the Skyline Group."
Anna suddenly had an idea. "Why don't you take me with you? I'll go to Micah's company too. How about it? Can you ask if they're hiring?"
Bella's eyes lit up. "Sure, our company is hiring right now. But hasn't your resignation application not been approved yet?"
Anna nonchalantly said, "Forget it. I don't care anymore. If I have to pay a penalty, so be it."
Anna got excited at the thought. "Then ask Mr. Hughes for me."
Bella nodded, and the two parted ways.
Bella quickly got the news from Micah that Anna could join as long as Colin released her. Anna was overjoyed at the thought of working with Bella and immediately went to find Colin.
Anna and Colin's relationship seemed to have returned to the way it was before. She had let go of her previous thoughts and awkwardness and calmly told Colin, "I want to resign."
Colin squinted at Anna and said, "Why do you insist on resigning? Is it because someone offered you a higher salary? If it's because of what happened last time, there's no need. Besides, I already threw away your resignation letter."
Anna immediately got angry. "What? Didn't you say you agreed to my resignation?"
Colin raised an eyebrow and leaned back in his office chair, lazily saying, "When did I agree to your resignation? That was just your imagination."
Anna clenched and unclenched her fists, took a deep breath, and calmly said, "I've already promised Micah. I'm going to work for him. And I can work with Bella. I'm thrilled about it. Why won't you let me go?"
Colin didn't expect Anna to resign to go to Micah's company. He smiled indifferently. "Anna, does Micah pay you more than I do? How about this: I'll give you four times your current salary."
Anna was speechless at the mention of four times her salary. She really needed the money. Four times her salary would be $40,000, while Micah could only offer her the same as her current salary.
Anna hesitated. Four times her salary, and she was just a newly promoted assistant. Where else could she find such a high salary?
Seeing Anna hesitate, Colin noticed that her mind was filled with thoughts of four times her salary.
He suppressed a smile and seriously said, "If you stay, our company offers employee housing benefits. You won't have to pay rent anymore. How about that?"
Faced with such a tempting offer, Anna couldn't help but feel tempted. But then she thought about her complicated relationship with Colin.
Although they both ignored it now, it still felt like a ticking time bomb. She decided it was better to stay away from Colin.
Anna thought for a moment and said, "I'm just a newly promoted assistant. Why are you offering me such good treatment? You don't really need me, do you? Why insist on keeping me?"
Colin suddenly blurted out, "Who says I don't need you?"
Anna was stunned, a strange feeling passing through her heart.
Colin immediately regretted his words. How could he let the truth slip out? They had agreed to just be friends.
As he was thinking of an excuse, he heard Anna say, "Such a high salary makes me feel scared."
Anna's heart skipped a beat, but she still refused, despite the pain. "Forget it. I think it's better for me to work with Bella."
She didn't want to stay in a place full of trouble.
Seeing Anna's determination to resign, Colin felt a flash of displeasure. He finally said with a stern face, "Fine, you really want to resign? You don't need the money anymore? Don't regret it."
Anna firmly said, "I won't regret it."
Colin snorted and said, "Don't forget, you still owe me $2 million. How do you plan to repay it? By working for Micah?"
This hit Anna's weak spot. How could she forget she still owed Colin $2 million?
Anna suddenly fell silent, turning from a fierce eagle into a small bird, which Colin found amusing.
Seeing her silence, Colin had to coax her. "If you stay, the four times salary stands. We can deduct your debt from your salary, okay? Plus, you'll get 14 months' salary and a year-end bonus."
This was a direct hit to Anna's weak spot. She needed money the most right now.
