Chapter 422 Sable's Lies

Bella shook her head slightly, her gaze steady. "This is my business, it’s got nothing to do with you. What’s between Sterling and me is beyond your understanding."

Sable's face darkened at Bella's words. Anger surged inside her, but she had no outlet for it. She looked at Bella, her eyes flickering with mixed emotions, and finally let out a helpless sigh before turning to leave.

This time, she didn't even bother with the desserts.

Back at the office, Sable took a moment to compose herself, trying to appear calm and professional. She approached Sterling's desk and knocked gently. After getting the okay, she stepped inside.

"Mr. Windsor, there were too many people, and I couldn't get the desserts because the wait was too long." Sable tried to keep her voice light and natural, but the turmoil inside her was hard to hide.

Sterling looked up at Sable, a flicker of disappointment in his eyes. He quickly regained his composure and nodded. "It's alright, thanks for trying."

Sable took a deep breath and continued, "Mrs. Windsor asked me to tell you that from now on, you should go your separate ways and live your own lives. No matter what you do, she won't come back to you. She wants you to proceed with the divorce as soon as possible. She said she no longer has any feelings for you."

Sterling's face turned pale instantly. He gripped the pen in his hand so tightly it seemed like he might crush it. Sable watched his reaction, feeling a mix of satisfaction and guilt.

Sterling's voice was low and hard, his eyes behind the glasses seemed to freeze over. He had looked forward to the little moments of warmth when Sable brought desserts, a rare comfort in his busy life.

But now, the news from Sable felt like a cold shower, leaving him stunned and heartbroken.

"What did you say?" he asked again, his tone tinged with disbelief and anger. He couldn't believe that all his efforts had amounted to nothing.

Sable looked at Sterling's reaction. "Mrs. Windsor said she no longer has any feelings for you and wants you to proceed with the divorce." Sable gathered her courage and repeated Bella's words. She tried to keep her tone calm, but the turmoil inside her was hard to hide.

Sterling's eyes grew colder. He clenched his fists, trying to suppress his anger and frustration. Finally, he took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.

"Did she say anything else?"

Sable lowered her head, afraid to meet Sterling's eyes, fearing he might see through her lie. She tried to keep her voice steady and firm. "That's all she said. Mrs. Windsor has always known you were trying to provoke her, she saw through your act long ago. I used to think she still had some feelings for you, but now it seems no matter what you do, the result is the same. She doesn't love you anymore, so there's no room for reconciliation. I'm sorry I couldn't help you."

Sterling listened to Sable's words, his anger and frustration surging like a tidal wave. He stood up abruptly, his chair crashing against the wall with a dull thud. He clenched his fists, trying to suppress his rage. His voice was low and firm. "Divorce is out of the question. Don't even think about it!"

Sable was taken aback by Sterling's reaction. She hadn't expected him to get so worked up. Seeing the anger in his eyes, she felt a surge of fear. She knew she couldn't change his mind or persuade him to accept reality.

"Mr. Windsor, please calm down," Sable tried to soothe him, but her voice trembled slightly. "Mrs. Windsor has made up her mind. We can't change her thoughts. You need to accept reality."

Seeing Sterling's angry and unwilling expression, Sable felt a pang of sadness. She sighed softly, walked to the break room, and made him a cup of tea. She carefully brought it to him, her tone deliberately gentle, trying to ease the tension. "Mr. Windsor, if her heart's no longer with you, why chase her so desperately? Honestly, she doesn't deserve it. You're an amazing man, you can have any woman you want."

Sterling felt a strange sensation at Sable's words. He knew she was a competent secretary, impeccable in her work, and never meddled in personal matters. But today, her words seemed unusual, almost suggestive.

Sterling wasn't naive; he sensed something different in Sable's tone.

He slowly looked at her, his gaze scrutinizing and probing. Gradually, he realized Sable might have developed feelings for him.

This realization helped Sterling calm down. He took a deep breath and spoke firmly. "She is worth it. No one else compares."

This statement was meant for both Sable and himself.

Sable looked up at him, and in that moment of eye contact, she lowered her head, feeling guilty. She knew her words had been presumptuous and might have caused a misunderstanding. She didn't dare to meet Sterling's eyes, fearing he might see through her secret.

"Yes, I'll get back to work," Sable said softly, her voice tinged with panic and embarrassment. She quickly turned and left Sterling's sight, returning to her desk.

At the end of the day, Sterling didn't ask Sable to share a ride as usual. Instead, he instructed Ryan to take him to a hotel. This action sent a clear signal to Sable, making her realize she might have been too hasty.

Sable stood at the company entrance, watching Sterling's car drive away, feeling a mix of emotions. She understood her actions might have caused a misunderstanding, even resentment from Sterling. This made her feel regretful, but also more determined to change her situation.

Reflecting on her own marriage, Sable felt a sense of frustration and resentment. Her marriage had been too hasty, lacking trials and challenges, as if she could see the end from the beginning. This life made her feel trapped and suffocated. She longed to break free and pursue the life she truly wanted.

Sable knew changing her situation wouldn't be easy. But she also understood that if she didn't take action, her life would remain stagnant, unable to move forward.

As for Sterling, although he felt disappointed and displeased with Sable's behavior, he didn't hold a grudge against her. He understood that everyone has their own pursuits and thoughts, and Sable was no exception.
