Chapter 155 Resignation
Lately, Anna had been toying with the idea of quitting her job, but she hadn't pulled the trigger yet. Maybe it was because Colin wasn't ready to let her go.
It'd been over a week since Anna's incident blew up online. When she finally showed up at the office again, she bumped into Colin right as she stepped into the elevator. This was their first face-to-face since everything went down.
Colin had wanted to comfort Anna before, but he never found the right words. He felt bad about the whole thing, but the timing was never right.
Anna didn't expect to see Colin in the elevator. He stood there, hands in his pockets, staring at her, while she awkwardly avoided his gaze, her head down, lost in her own thoughts.
She looked thinner, her face even more delicate, and it tugged at Colin's heart.
Finally, he couldn't hold back. "Anna, I'm sorry. That whole mess was my fault."
Anna felt a bit awkward and replied, "It's fine. I'm planning to quit anyway, so we probably won't see each other again, right?"
Colin was taken aback, clearly unsettled. "You're quitting?"
Anna nodded. "Yeah."
He pressed on, "Why? Is it because of the rumors? Don't worry, I'll get the PR team on it. No one will dare to talk about you."
She shook her head. "After everything, you still want me to stay? Aren't you worried about what people will say about you?"
Colin felt a sudden wave of sadness. He hadn't expected Anna to care more about his reputation than her own.
What reputation did he even have left? Everyone knew him as a playboy. This silly girl was still worried about his image.
They didn't talk again until they reached the office. Anna thought about it; even though Colin said she could stay, the current situation made it impossible. She couldn't predict what might happen next or if she could handle it.
After a lot of thinking, Anna decided to write her resignation letter. Just this morning, as she walked into the office, she noticed her colleagues giving her strange looks. She could ignore it, but she couldn't keep going like this. She and Colin were nothing, but the gossipers would stir up trouble and cause more issues.
When Anna handed her resignation letter to Colin, he held it for a long time without saying a word.
Finally, Colin asked, "Do you really have to quit?"
Anna nodded. "Yeah, I don't think I can stay here any longer."
Colin tried to convince her. "This job pays well. If you leave, it'll be tough to find another one with this kind of salary. Are you sure?"
Anna hesitated for a moment. She needed the money, but she couldn't sacrifice her dignity for it.
After mulling it over, Anna said, "I do need the money, but I can't keep working here with all the rumors flying around. If I quit and you agree, we can just go our separate ways and live our own lives. Isn't that better?"
Colin felt a sharp pain in his heart hearing her say that.
He couldn't stand the thought of Anna leaving, so he almost instinctively said, "Resigning takes a process. We need to find someone to replace you first."
Anna knew quitting required at least a month's notice. She thought for a moment and said, "Okay, I won't leave until you find someone to replace me."
It was just a month; she could wait, and it would give her time to look for another job.
After Anna left the office, Colin put her resignation letter into the shredder. If she wanted to escape from him, she'd have to see if she had the ability.
He had many ways to keep someone around, but he didn't want to use those methods on Anna. He wanted her to stay willingly.
He wanted the rose he nurtured to be his alone, not to be taken by anyone else. He realized what he had said to Micah before. He used to think love didn't matter as long as the time spent together was happy. Marriage and love were irrelevant to him.
But if this was what Anna wanted, he thought he could give her both.
Anna didn't expect to run into Colin again after work. She thought it was such a coincidence that she couldn't avoid him.
Just as she was about to turn and leave, Colin stopped her, "Where are you going?"
Anna smiled, "I have a date with Bella."
Colin nodded, "Get in the car; I'll give you a ride."
Before Anna could protest, he grabbed her by the collar and put her in the car. Then Colin hit the gas and drove off.
Anna was speechless, wondering why things were developing so strangely. Wasn't she supposed to be quitting? How did she end up in Colin's car again?
Anna frowned and looked at Colin, who was focused on driving, and asked, "Don't you think we should keep our distance now?"
Anna thought she was being considerate, but Colin said, "I'm not married; why keep distance?"
Anna widened her eyes, "What do you mean?"
Colin suddenly said, "I called off the engagement."
Anna was taken aback, "Why did you call off the engagement? I'm sorry; I didn't know things would get this serious, but it's not entirely my fault, right? If you hadn't insisted on sleeping together, it wouldn't have come to this. Is there any way to fix it?"
Colin glanced at her, "Do you want me to fix it?"
Anna nodded, "Yes, after all, she was your fiancée. Isn't it a pity to call off the engagement just like that?"
Colin laughed, "Your thinking is really different from others. You're right, since I don't have a fiancée now, shouldn't you compensate me with one?"
Anna looked at him in disbelief, "Compensate you with one? I don't know any wealthy families. Actually, the ones I used to know don't hang out with me anymore. Even if I wanted to introduce you to them, they probably wouldn't be interested."
Colin said, "It doesn't have to be someone from a wealthy family."
