Chapter 167 Liam Hughes
Anna had been holding back her anger all night, and upon hearing Colin's words, she felt like slapping him again.
Anna struggled to contain her anger, asking, "What is there left to talk about between us? If you want to talk about resignation, we can have a few words."
Colin felt a bit angry too, but remembering what he had said earlier, he knew he had gone too far and just wanted to apologize now.
"Anna, I apologize for what I said and did earlier. I never saw you as one of those women. I thought you knew that. Actually, I..." He was interrupted by Anna before he could finish expressing his confession.
"Colin, have you had enough? I'll just pretend you were drunk tonight and let's not bring it up again."
Colin realized Anna was genuinely angry, so he softened his tone to appease her. "I'm sorry, tonight was indeed my fault. I drank a bit too much. Don't take it to heart. I just wanted to explain that marriage isn't something I'm considering right now, but if I were to get married, it would definitely be to a girl I love. Do you understand?"
Colin thought he had made himself clear, but Anna let out a sarcastic laugh. "Let me tell you again, whether you get married or not has nothing to do with me, okay? Who you marry and how you marry also has nothing to do with me."
Seeing the sincerity in Anna's eyes, Colin felt a sudden pang of disappointment. He said, "Anna, I'll give you time to think it over."
Colin then let go of the doorknob, and Anna opened the door without hesitation, slamming it shut behind her.
Colin stood at the door, eyes downcast, lost in thought, while behind the door, Anna slid down to the floor, burying her face in her hands as tears streamed down like broken pearls.
Why? Why was everyone pressuring her? Her life was already a mess, why did Colin have to get involved?
Micah had told her she wasn't worthy of liking Colin and could never be the mistress of the Rivera family, but she had never had such thoughts.
Now even Colin was saying she wasn't worthy. What had she done wrong? She had never wanted any of this. Were they all just too full of themselves?
Anna decided she would resign and leave tomorrow. No, she had already submitted her resignation letter but had to wait another month. She thought that after this month, she would never see Colin again.
Given Colin's conditions and family background, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't catch up. So she didn't want to trouble herself. Tonight, she would just pretend it was a dream.
On the other side, Bella had been exhausted by Sterling last night. They had done it once in the car, and after getting home, Sterling had taken her to the bathroom and then to the bed, leaving her unable to get up the next day, so she took half a day off.
But when she arrived at the company in the afternoon, she found the atmosphere was off. Everyone was slacking off.
Some were sleeping, some were snacking, and the place felt undisciplined. Bella glanced towards Micah's office, feeling a bit worried, and asked a colleague next to her, "What's going on? Why does everyone seem so laid-back and lazy today?"
The colleague, a round-faced woman, said, "You don't know? Mr. Hughes' family is here again, and they're arguing. Last time, they even fought and ended up in the hospital. Now they're here again. I think something big is going to happen."
Bella frowned but didn't say anything. A few more colleagues gathered around. "Why don't you go take a look? You're Sterling's wife; no one in the Hughes family would dare do anything to you."
"I heard the Hughes family is here to take over the company again. I wonder what Mr. Hughes will do this time?"
"Honestly, since Mr. Hughes took over our company, our performance has been soaring. If we change presidents, I think everyone will feel quite uncertain."
Listening to her colleagues' discussions, Bella felt speechless, and then they started urging her.
"Yeah, Bella, you could use the excuse of delivering documents to go in and take a look."
Bella didn't want to get involved in Micah's family disputes. Those messy affairs gave her a headache just thinking about them.
"Forget it. The company has its own rules. If the company is going to change presidents, Mr. Hughes must have his own considerations. Let's not get involved," Bella suggested softly.
A colleague continued, "But Mr. Hughes has worked so hard for so long. Are we just going to let them bully him like this?"
This struck a chord with Bella, who was a soft-hearted person. The company was indeed Micah's hard work. Giving it away so easily seemed too unfair, and the Hughes family was really pushing their luck.
Thinking of this, Bella decided to take a look. She took a deep breath, picked up the documents on her desk, and walked to Micah's office.
Hearing no noise inside, she knocked on the door. When Micah said to come in, she pushed the door open.
Upon entering, Bella saw that besides Micah, there was an elderly man with white hair. Bella found it strange that it wasn't Micah's brother this time.
The old man looked quite aged, possibly even Micah's grandfather, but considering Micah was the youngest in the family, it wasn't surprising if this man was his father.
Bella deliberately ignored Liam Hughes and said to Micah, "The employees outside heard some noise from the office and asked me to check if you need any help."
Micah waved his hand, "It's nothing. Tell them to focus on their work."
Thinking of how Micah had been beaten by Elijah before, Bella felt a surge of anger. So she didn't show Liam any respect and just nodded.
As Bella was about to leave, Liam got upset. He banged his cane on the floor and said, "Is the Hughes family business any concern of you employees? Just do your job and don't meddle in other matters."
Bella was infuriated by this. She already had a low opinion of the Hughes family; aside from Micah, they were nothing but a bunch of opportunistic jerks.
Bella, not backing down, said, "Sir, with all due respect, I'm not just an employee. My husband and I are good friends of Mr. Hughes. It's not unreasonable for me to check on the noise from the office, is it?"
Liam, probably not expecting an employee to talk back, glared at her and said, "Who are you, Micah's friend?" He then turned his ire towards Micah. "These are the kind of useless friends you make? Bringing friends into the company? I don't think you want to manage the company; you're just fooling around. I'll give you three days to hand over the Skyline Group to Elijah."
