Chapter 238 The Truth of Bankruptcy

Colin started off bluntly, "I heard you took some time off. Why? What's the deal?"

He knew why Anna had taken leave, but he wanted to hear it from her directly.

Anna hesitated, "Caleb got hurt and is in the hospital. I went to see him."

Colin held back his anger, "Hurt? He sure picked a convenient time to get injured."

Anna, sensing Colin's sarcasm, got a bit annoyed, "Colin, cut the sarcasm. He really got hurt. Last night, I almost got hit by a car when I was heading home. He saved me."

Colin immediately suspected Caleb's motives. Caleb was always scheming; it couldn't be a coincidence that he saved Anna. Or that a car almost hit her.

'Caleb might have some genuine feelings for Anna, but not much,' Colin thought.

"Did he use saving you as an excuse to get you to take care of him in the hospital?"

Anna was surprised, "How did you know?"

Colin scoffed, "Is that the only trick he has?"

Anna laughed, "Colin, what do you mean? Are you saying he saved me as part of some scheme?"

Colin wanted to tell Anna, yes, it was all part of Caleb's manipulative plan.

But hearing the displeasure in her voice, he couldn't bring himself to say it. He didn't want to upset her.

Colin felt cold inside, thinking Anna was being deceived and even helping Caleb. Furious, he hung up the phone.

Suddenly, Colin wondered if Anna might actually be falling for Caleb's tricks. Caleb was indeed cunning, managing to make Anna feel sorry for him.

Colin immediately called Sterling, who had the same suspicions.

They sent people to investigate the truck and driver involved in the accident, but found no trace of them or the vehicle.

It seemed Colin's guess was right: Caleb had staged the accident, pretending to be a hero.

When Anna arrived at the hospital entrance, Bella called, saying she wanted to visit Caleb too.

Anna found it odd but didn't say anything, waiting for Bella at the entrance.

Bella arrived with a bouquet of flowers. Anna smiled, "Why did you decide to visit Caleb?"

Bella forced a smile, "We're all friends, right? Since he got hurt saving you, it's only right I come see him."

Anna and Bella chatted as they walked to Caleb's room. Caleb was fiddling with his phone when he saw the door open.

He looked up, his face lighting up at the sight of Anna, but his smile froze for a few seconds when Bella appeared behind her. He quickly regained his composure.

"Anna, Bella, you're here."

Bella placed the flowers on the table, "I heard you got hurt saving Anna. I came to check on you."

Both Bella and Caleb knew the truth but didn't reveal it. Caleb smiled, "Thanks."

He then turned to Anna, "You didn't have to rush over. Did you have breakfast?"

Anna felt a bit uncomfortable with Caleb's gentleness, especially with Bella there.

Bella chimed in, "Yeah, Anna, you must have skipped breakfast to get here so quickly."

She then turned to Caleb, "Caleb, did you have breakfast? Should we grab you something?"

Anna looked at Caleb, "You didn't eat either?"

Caleb smiled helplessly, knowing Bella's intention was to get Anna out of the room. "No, and my arm makes it hard to eat."

Anna nodded, then said to Bella, "I'll go get Caleb some breakfast. Wait here."

Bella nodded, "Go ahead."

As soon as Anna left the room, Bella and Caleb's smiles vanished.

Bella's voice turned cold, "What are you up to?"

Caleb looked at Bella indifferently, "Relax. I'm just pursuing my girlfriend. Is that not allowed?"

Bella sneered, "Girlfriend? How dare you call her that after everything you've done to Anna and the Powell family? Have you forgotten?"

Caleb's expression darkened, giving him a sinister look even in his hospital gown. He hated when people brought up his shady past.

"I haven't forgotten, but I advise you not to interfere with me and Anna. It's none of your business."

Bella thought for a moment and said, "I don't want to interfere, but Anna is my best friend. I won't let her get hurt. You, a scumbag, don't deserve to be with her."

"Scumbag? Yeah, I've been one for years. Now I want to be a good person. Can't I? Don't worry, I genuinely care for Anna and won't hurt her."

Bella didn't believe Caleb, especially after he caused the Powell family's bankruptcy. She wanted to tell Anna the truth immediately, to get her away from this shameless man.

But Bella remembered Sterling's words; she couldn't ruin his plan.

While Bella and Caleb faced off in the room, Anna ran into a familiar face at the hospital—Lorenzo, who had harassed her at the banquet hall.

This time, he was respectful, likely thinking Anna was Colin's girl.

Lorenzo greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. Powell."

Anna didn't want to engage, but Lorenzo continued, "Ms. Powell, don't you want to know the truth behind the Powell family's bankruptcy?"

Anna stopped and turned to him, "What do you mean?"

Lorenzo spoke earnestly, "I'm serious, Ms. Powell. If you want to know..."

Anna interrupted, "What? If I want to know, I have to sleep with you?"

Anna glared at him. Lorenzo quickly waved his hands, "No, no, Ms. Powell, you misunderstood. I genuinely want to tell you. I was friends with your father."

"Don't mention my father. You're not worthy of being his friend," Anna snapped.

"I know you have a deep misunderstanding, but I truly want to tell you the truth," Lorenzo said helplessly.

Anna paused for a few seconds, then continued, "Fine, tell me. What's the real story behind the Powell family's bankruptcy?"

Lorenzo explained, "The bankruptcy was due to the loss of a batch of jewelry materials. I found out that someone within the Powell family stole them. It was deliberate, because that person coveted the materials and took them."
