Chapter 85 Resentment
Debra's stare was like a scene straight out of a soap opera, meant for everyone to see.
James caught Debra's look right away.
"Why are you staring at me? Think I snatched the kid?" James shot back, his voice icy.
Debra played the scared card, ducking behind Sterling.
"I never said that. Why so jumpy? Feeling guilty? Besides, you were the last one with Bella, so yeah, you're the prime suspect," Debra muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear.
"You witch!" James, usually the calm one, snapped.
He lunged at Debra, fist ready to fly.
Sterling kicked James hard, sending him sprawling on the floor, clutching his chest. Anna rushed to help him up.
At that moment, James finally got why Anna was so mad.
Debra was a real piece of work.
"Debra, you witch! I'll end you!" Anna tried to charge at Debra, but James held her back.
James glared at Sterling. "Sterling, you actually believe Debra?"
Everyone in the room turned to Sterling, waiting for his response.
Sterling's face showed a struggle, then he went cold.
"So, should I believe you?" he shot back at James.
Bella's heart sank. Sterling had let her down completely.
Debra's lips curled into a smug grin.
"You're a fool! All you care about is control. You're a monster!" Anna yelled, trying to rush at Sterling, but James held her back again.
"James, take Anna and go. I need to talk to Sterling," Bella's voice was raspy and low.
James looked at Bella, then at Sterling. Finally, he clenched his jaw and led Anna out of the room.
"And you," Sterling said, turning to Debra.
Debra froze for a second, but under Sterling's sharp gaze, she didn't dare argue and nodded, leaving the room.
Now, it was just Sterling and Bella.
Sterling walked over to Bella and looked down at her. "What do you want to say?"
Bella looked at Sterling, her eyes full of resentment, cutting him deep.
"I didn't tell you about the pregnancy because I wanted to escape your control. I also didn't want you to use the child to keep controlling me," Bella's voice was hoarse, filled with sorrow and anger.
This time, Sterling didn't mock her. He just stood silently by the bed.
"Sterling, you got me pregnant. The child was yours, whether you believe it or not. I've repaid what I owed you. We should get a divorce," Bella said quietly, looking at Sterling, waiting for his answer.
Sterling felt a mix of anger and guilt. He loved Bella deeply but was terrible at showing it, turning all his tenderness into control.
"A miscarried child doesn't count as mine. If you really want to break free from me, you'll have to carry my child to term," Sterling said, his voice icy.
Bella's face remained blank, like she had expected this answer all along.
"Fine, don't regret it," she replied, her indifferent tone cutting deep.
"No one can make me regret anything," Sterling sneered before storming out of the room.
Outside, he found Debra cowering behind their bodyguard, facing off against an enraged James and Anna.
"Sterling, they're going to kill me!" Debra quickly hid behind him.
"If you go after Debra again, don't blame me for sending you to the police. You'll never get out," Sterling said coldly, then left the hospital with Debra in tow.
Anna screamed after him, "Sterling, you're a bastard! You and that witch can go to hell!"
If James hadn't held Anna back, she might have attacked Sterling.
At the end of the hallway, Micah and Colin watched the scene unfold.
Colin sighed and shook his head. "Sterling's really screwing up this time."
Micah sighed too. "I don't get how he and Bella even function as a couple."
Suddenly, she remembered something and nudged Colin, pointing at Anna. "Isn't Anna your employee now? Aren't you going to talk to her?"
Colin rolled his eyes. "Do I look like an idiot? If I go over there now, I'll get attacked just for being Sterling's friend. Never mess with an angry woman; she'll tear you apart!"
"You sure know a lot," Micah rolled his eyes back at him.
"I'm more worried about Bella. I don't know if she can handle all this," Micah said, concerned. Compared to Debra, he definitely preferred Bella.
In the ward, Bella lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. She thought about her friends' complaints.
'Yeah, I've been living a miserable life,' she thought, clenching her fists, her eyes burning with hatred.
Meanwhile, after leaving the hospital, Debra still tried to stick close to Sterling.
"I have to go to the office. Why are you following me?" Sterling looked at Debra with disgust.
Debra's heart sank. She could feel his barely-contained anger and decided to back off.
When Sterling got back into the car, someone was already inside—Owen.
"Mr. Windsor, do you really believe what Debra said?" Owen's old face was full of anger.
Sterling couldn't bring himself to be mad at the old man who had taken care of him since he was a kid.
"It's my business. You don't need to worry about it," Sterling said, closing his eyes.
Owen looked at Sterling and said, "I watched you grow up, and Bella too. You're like my own children. If you can't stand up for her, then let me do it."
With that, he got out of the car and headed to the hospital to visit Bella.
