Chapter 184 Paid Accompaniment

"Of course, I've heard about it. I wonder who Mr. Rivera will fancy tonight."

"That doesn't matter. To catch Mr. Rivera's eye, you first have to catch his mother's eye."

"The Rivera family's standards are so high. I don't know which girl can succeed. Forget it, I have no chance. But, Vesper, you should give it a try."

Vesper Jones, looking smug, snorted, "The Rivera family's standards are indeed high, but I'm not someone who just anyone can impress. However, if Mr. Rivera is willing to cut ties with those mistresses outside for me, I might consider it."

The girls kept chatting, and someone else said, "I heard Mr. Rivera brought the girl he was rumored with last time tonight. Is that true?"

"Yes, I heard her name is Anna, from the Powell family or something."

"The Powell family? They're just a bankrupt family. She still dreams of climbing up to the Rivera family? She should look at her own status."

Anna's face turned pale upon hearing this, and Colin naturally heard it too.

He suddenly looked at Anna nervously, wanting to explain that he had no idea about the matchmaking his mother arranged.

Then he saw Anna looking at him with a pale face, "So, tonight you brought me here to humiliate me? Yes, my family is bankrupt, but I'm not someone to be trampled on."

Before Colin could speak, Anna lifted her dress and turned to confront the girls.

"Talking behind someone's back, you're just a bunch of gossiping women. What's there to be proud of?"

Anna's sudden appearance startled the girls, and their faces changed.

They wanted to mock Anna further, but seeing Colin's dark expression behind her, they wisely dispersed.

Colin calmed himself and said, "Anna, I really didn't know about my mother's arrangement tonight. I swear."

Anna replied, "Forget it, I don't want to hear it. I just want to work quietly. Is that okay?"

Colin sighed, "Okay, then tonight, just consider it as accompanying your boss to a party. Paid."

Anna's mood lifted instantly at the word "paid."

"Really, paid? Like, paid right after?" Anna's eyes sparkled.

Colin rubbed his forehead helplessly, "Yes, paid."

Anna immediately brightened up, "Fine, being mocked a few times is nothing. After the Powell family went bankrupt, I've been mocked plenty. As long as I get paid."

Colin looked at Anna helplessly, "Are you that obsessed with money?"

Anna nonchalantly replied, "You have money, so of course, you're not obsessed with it."

Just as Anna was about to leave, Colin grabbed her. Anna immediately became wary, "What are you doing?"

Colin almost knocked on her head, saying arrogantly, "Didn't you agree to accompany me? What do you think you're doing by leaving like this?"

Then Colin placed Anna's hand in the crook of his arm, "This is what a proper companion should do."

Anna was no stranger to these formalities, having attended many parties with Peter before.

But Anna frowned and asked, "Is this appropriate? After all, we were in the news together, and it caused you to break off your engagement. What if it causes trouble for you?"

Colin gave her an incredulous look, "You actually care about me? That's rare. So, you don't want to make money?"

Anna thought for a moment, "How much?"

Colin held up one finger, and Anna exclaimed, "Ten thousand dollars? Wow, no trouble at all, let's go."

Colin, both amused and exasperated, rubbed his forehead. He meant a thousand dollars. 'Oh well, ten thousand it is, as long as she's happy.'

Just as Anna was about to leave, she stepped on her dress and slipped forward. Colin quickly caught her by the waist, pulling her close.

As their eyes met, the atmosphere grew intimate, and Anna's heart skipped a beat.

Just as Anna was about to struggle free, someone nearby chuckled. Colin and Anna looked up.

Anna was startled and pushed Colin away. Gia stood there, smiling at them.

Colin sighed, "Mom, what are you doing?"

Anna felt like her soul left her body at Colin's words. She looked at the elegant woman before her, who exuded grace and nobility.

She couldn't believe this was Colin's mother. Anna hurriedly bowed, "Mrs. Rivera, I'm Mr. Rivera's employee."

Anna, flustered, didn't know what she was saying, then added, "I'll be going now." She then fled in a panic.

Colin closed his eyes and sighed, "Mom, do you have to walk so quietly?"

Gia smiled, "What? Did I interrupt you? I was wondering where you were all night. Turns out you were here flirting with a girl. So, she's the Anna? She looks quite pretty. Is this your type? Nothing special."

Colin said, "Mom, can you stop? You scared her away."

Gia was indifferent, "What, do I look scary? She's just timid."

Colin didn't want to argue with Gia, "Alright, just leave it."

Gia flicked her hair, exuding charm, "Leave it? How could I possibly leave you alone? I'm telling you, if you don't bring a girlfriend home by the end of the year, don't come back. And forget about the Rivera family inheritance."

Colin waved dismissively, "Got it."

With that, he chased after Anna. Gia watched Anna's fleeing figure, thinking it wouldn't be bad if Anna were Colin's girlfriend.

At first glance, Gia liked Anna. She thought Anna would be a greedy woman, but she looked like a frightened little rabbit.

Gia grew more fond of her, thinking there was hope for Colin to get married this year.

Colin found Anna at the dessert table, eating cake. He walked over, but before he could speak, she stuffed a piece of cake into his mouth.

"Try this, it's super delicious." Anna held the cake plate, looking satisfied.
