Chapter 71 The Fight Between Two Men
Sterling's eyes narrowed, feeling the sting of James's words.
"What does it matter to you whether I love her or not?" Sterling shot back, his voice icy.
James stepped closer, locking eyes with Sterling. "If you really love her, why didn't you come with her today? Why are you sneaking around?"
"I don't owe you any explanations," Sterling snapped, his anger bubbling up.
James didn't back down, his gaze intense. "If you don't love her, then let her go. Give her back her freedom."
"Freedom? You think she's not free with me?" Sterling scoffed, grabbing James by the collar, his eyes flashing with anger.
"What do you mean by 'freedom'? That I should divorce her so she can marry you? And who are you to say this to me? You're not even her ex-boyfriend," Sterling spat, his sarcasm fueling James's anger.
James swung a punch, but Sterling blocked it and quickly threw James to the ground with a shoulder throw.
"Even if you're her husband, what have you done for her? You don't love her. Your so-called love is just extreme control. How could someone who truly loves her let her dignity be trampled?" James, still on the ground, glared up at Sterling.
"What did you say? It's your dignity being trampled now!" Sterling, furious, stomped down hard, but James rolled away just in time.
James scrambled to his feet, ready to fight.
"Was it you who disrupted my engagement ceremony? How could a husband who truly loves his wife do something so disgusting? Do you think you're warning her? You're trampling on her dignity." James's words made Sterling hesitate.
James landed a solid punch on Sterling's face, but Sterling quickly kicked him to the ground.
James's fighting skills were no match for Sterling's, but Sterling didn't press the attack.
James got up, brushing the dirt off his chest. "I was abroad for three years, and since I returned, I haven't had any deep interactions with Bella. Our few encounters were mostly coincidental. I once asked her out, but she refused. At least as a wife, she has a sense of responsibility. But how have you treated her?"
James's words made Sterling clench his fists again.
"You try to control her with your dominance and possessiveness, thinking that's love. You don't truly understand Bella; you only make her resent you. Seeing this resentment, you become even more domineering, even humiliating her, deepening her resentment. Is this vicious cycle really love?" James's lips curled into a mocking smile, but Sterling punched him in the face again.
Enraged, Sterling kept punching James. "I don't need you to teach me what to do."
James tried to defend himself, but Sterling's attacks were relentless. Finally, after kicking James to the ground again, Sterling stopped.
James got up, wiping the blood from his mouth, knowing he'd really ticked off Sterling.
"You should worry about yourself now," Sterling said, straightening his suit and striding towards his car.
James sighed, sitting by the roadside, letting the rain soak him.
As the heir to the Savoy Family, James knew his family's power was no match for Sterling's. He shouldn't have poked the bear. Yeah, he was blinded by love, but he didn't regret it.
After a while, James got up and headed home.
"You're finally back. We had plans to go shopping today," Amara said with a smile, but her face fell when she saw the bruises and dirt on James.
James remembered their plans but wasn't in the mood anymore.
"What happened to you? Who did this? I'm calling the police," Amara said, her voice rising as she grabbed her phone.
James walked past her, his tone flat. "Sterling hit me. Call the cops if you want."
Amara's face went pale, and she stared at James in shock.
"Why did you fight with Sterling? Are you out of your mind? Don't you know he could ruin your family? No, we need to apologize and ask for his forgiveness," Amara said, panicking as she grabbed James's hand, trying to pull him towards the door.
James shook her off. "I'm not begging him. This is about a man's pride."
Amara looked at James, her eyes wide with realization. "Is this because of Bella? You still can't let her go, so you provoked Sterling, and he taught you a lesson, right?"
James looked at Amara silently, then nodded.
Tears streamed down Amara's face. "Why can't you forget Bella? What am I to you? What does my love mean to you? Can't you see that I love you?"
James looked at Amara and fell silent. He sighed, shook his head, and turned to go upstairs.
"You jerk, answer me!" Amara screamed, grabbing a cushion from the sofa and hurling it at him.
The cushion hit the stairs, bounced twice, and landed on the floor. Crying, Amara grabbed her bag and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Bella had no idea about the fight between James and Sterling or that James had upset Amara after getting home.
Bella had just walked in when Sterling arrived.
"Is your face hurt?" Bella asked, pointing to a small bruise on Sterling's face.
"Zoey, bring the first aid kit," Bella called out.
Sterling saw Bella's worried expression and suddenly thought of James's words.
He opened his mouth but didn't know what to say. His usual tough-guy act made it hard to express any gratitude.
"Have Zoey come to the study later," Sterling said, slipping back into his cold demeanor as he headed upstairs to his study.
