Chapter 76 Sterling's Attitude
After Colin dropped Bella off at the villa, he took off since he knew whatever Sterling and Bella were gonna talk about wasn't his business.
Bella was pacing back and forth in the living room, clutching the letter, her eyes darting to the door every now and then.
A few minutes earlier, Bella had called Sterling as soon as she got home.
Sterling was in a meeting when he got Bella's call and was about to tell her to wait.
"Please, this is really urgent," Bella's voice had a pleading tone that softened Sterling's heart.
"Alright, let's wrap this up and continue tomorrow," Sterling announced, cutting the meeting short.
"Mr. Windsor, this meeting is crucial for our company's future," the secretary quietly reminded him.
Sterling shot a cold glance at the secretary. "Didn't you hear me?"
The secretary, intimidated by Sterling's look, nodded and kept quiet.
Sterling drove quickly towards the villa.
As Bella anxiously waited, Zoey brought her a cup of hot coffee.
"Mrs. Windsor, you've paced around here seven times already. Even if Mr. Windsor rushes back, it's gonna take a bit. He's driving a car, not a rocket," Zoey teased.
"Thanks, Zoey," Bella said with a smile, holding the coffee cup with both hands.
Bella didn't share what was on her mind with Zoey. So Zoey thought Bella and Sterling's relationship had improved and that Bella was just missing Sterling.
Bella didn't want to talk about it because Zoey couldn't help and it would just add another person to worry about her.
Suddenly, Bella's eyes lit up as she heard the familiar sound of a car engine. Soon, she saw Sterling's car pull up outside the villa.
As soon as Sterling parked, Bella ran out to meet him.
"What's so urgent that you had to call me?" Sterling asked coldly.
"Look at this, it's about the plane crash from over a decade ago," Bella said, handing him the letter.
Sterling frowned as he opened the letter, and his frown deepened as he read it.
"The person who sent this might know the truth. We need to find them!" Bella said anxiously, looking at Sterling.
Bella thought Sterling would be happy to know there might be new developments in the old case, but to her surprise, Sterling's expression stayed cold and emotionless.
"Do you really believe what's in this letter? Why would a normal person use cut-out newspaper letters? That's something kidnappers do," Sterling said coldly.
"What do you mean? Do you think I'm lying to you?" Bella stared at Sterling angrily.
"Do you always think it was my father who caused that disaster? In my heart, my father is a hero who would never harm anyone! I just want the truth!" Bella shouted, her eyes red with anger.
Sterling clenched his fists, staring at Bella with a stern face but staying silent.
Bella glared back, and the tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife.
After a while, Sterling finally spoke up, "I don't buy what's in this letter. It could be a trap! I'll send someone to check out the location."
"No way, I need to see it for myself!" Bella insisted, standing her ground.
"What if someone kidnaps you to get to me?" Sterling growled, his eyes boring into hers.
Bella was taken aback, sensing a flicker of concern in Sterling's angry eyes.
'Is Sterling actually worried about me? Nah, he probably just doesn't want to lose someone to torment. No, perhaps it's more like the bond shared between family members, or he's used to having me around,' Bella thought, still doubting that Sterling had any real feelings for her. But his gaze did calm her down a bit.
"I have to go to that town, but I need you to get some bodyguards to keep me safe," Bella said, looking at Sterling with a hint of pleading.
Sterling stared into Bella's eyes for a long moment before finally exhaling deeply.
"I'll get you four bodyguards tomorrow, but you have to stay within their sight at all times!" Sterling warned sternly.
"Don't worry, I won't leave their sight! I swear!" Bella raised her hand solemnly.
"I gotta get back to the company," Sterling said, getting back into his car.
"Be careful on the road." Bella waved goodbye. With Sterling's agreement, Bella felt a wave of relief.
After Sterling left, Bella went back to her bedroom and called Anna to fill her in.
"That's great. It's dangerous for a pregnant woman like you to go to an unfamiliar town alone. Having bodyguards with you should make it much safer," Anna said.
"By the way, I'll go with you tomorrow," Anna suddenly suggested.
Bella was surprised. "You want to go with me? Aren't you starting work at Colin's company?"
"Colin gave me a week to prepare. I start work next week. Once I start working, I can help pay off my family's debts," Anna said, clearly excited about her new life.
"You can't refuse me. I'll come to you tomorrow. Sterling doesn't know you're pregnant. Do you expect those muscle-brained bodyguards to take care of you?" she added.
Anna's words made Bella hesitate. In the end, she agreed to Anna's request, and they decided to go to the town together.
Back at Sterling's company, he reconvened the meeting after returning.
The employees who had just left had to grab their laptops and head back to the conference room.
'Seriously, is he nuts? I was ready to go home. Why did he call us back? Does he think we're circus clowns?' an employee grumbled internally, though they kept a serious face during the meeting.
But this time, Sterling's demeanor was different. Instead of his usual laser focus on work, he seemed worried, sitting with his arms crossed and looking distracted.
