Chapter 442 Sudden Call
The room suddenly fell quiet, with only the occasional sound of traffic from outside the window and the two men's slightly heavy breathing. Colin looked at Sterling's back, the smile on his face gradually fading, replaced by a barely noticeable bitterness and helplessness.
"Spent all that money, didn't do anything, and you just let them leave? It's going to be a long night - how boring to be alone," Colin said, trying to sound casual.
Sterling stood by the window for a while, letting the fresh air circulate, then turned around and looked at Colin with a deep gaze, his tone carrying both seriousness and teasing: "Even a seasoned player in love loses sometimes. You can't handle just one Anna? That's not like you - wasn't chasing girls supposed to be easy for you?"
Colin let out a bitter laugh, his eyes full of helplessness and self-mockery: "I don't know. I've never been able to figure out what's really going on. She won't tell me the truth either - it's like a door that's shut tight. No matter how hard I knock, I get no response. Maybe she's still hung up on that Caleb guy. After all, they had a past together. Probably, I'm just not her type. No matter what I do, I can't get into her heart."
Colin shook his head, as if trying to shake those messy thoughts out of his mind: "What's funny is, in the end, I don't even know why she dumped me. It feels like someone hit me over the head with a club - knocked me senseless, and I don't even know who did it. You know what? I'm worse off than you. At least you know why Bella didn't want you - you got a clear answer. Me? I'm like an abandoned child who didn't even get to hear goodbye."
Colin's words unintentionally hit Sterling's sore spot. Sterling's movement paused slightly, but then he gave Colin's shoulder a moderate pat, without showing any anger on his face: "Get lost, stop making me feel worse. If I were you, in this situation, I'd at least figure out why she made that choice. Caleb is dead - that's a fact. Even if Anna still has feelings for Caleb, so what? Can a dead person compete with you? You're alive and breathing, and you can't beat someone who's not even in this world anymore?"
Sterling snorted, paused, then continued: "Besides, with all the things Caleb did when he was alive, Anna might not even have feelings for him anymore. If she still cared about Caleb, she wouldn't have left him in the first place. The problem must be somewhere else. You need to think hard about whether you didn't do well enough in some areas, or if there's something that disappointed her or made her unhappy. Only when you find the problem can you fix it, instead of sitting here feeling sorry for yourself. That doesn't help anything - look at yourself!"
Colin seemed restless. He put his hands in his pockets and paced around the room, his brow furrowed: "Anna won't say anything - what can I do? We've already broken up. Am I supposed to swallow my pride, go find her, and pester her until I get answers? Even if I did ask and got the truth, what difference would it make? If the result can't be changed anyway, I don't want to keep dragging this out. That would just make both of us more miserable. What's the point?"
He sighed, his eyes full of helplessness and confusion. Sterling looked at him, understanding that despite what Colin was saying, he still couldn't let go of Anna. But when it came to matters of the heart, outsiders could never easily get involved.
Sterling stubbed out his cigarette, pushed the ashtray aside, and quietly sat back down on the sofa.
He looked at Colin quietly, his eyes full of understanding and sympathy. He knew that right now, Colin needed time and space to sort out his thoughts and feelings.
"Alright, don't push yourself too hard," Sterling finally broke the silence. "When things are done here, go back to Harborvale first. Maybe a change of scenery will make you feel better. And who knows, maybe Anna will come around and reach out to you first."
Hearing this, Colin let out a bitter laugh: "I hope so. But I still want to take some time to calm down and really think about where things went wrong between us. If I was wrong, I'll definitely make it right. But if it's just because she can't let go of Caleb, or if she has no feelings for me anymore, then I'll just have to accept reality."
Sterling nodded in agreement.
In the early morning hours, with the night dark as ink and everything silent, Colin sat alone in front of the hotel's floor-to-ceiling window, holding a burnt-out cigarette, staring blankly at his phone screen showing Anna's number. He had looked at this number over and over again, his fingertip hovering over the call button for a long time, but he never had the courage to press it.
At this hour, she should have already landed in Harborvale on the evening flight, right? He thought to himself, and images of Anna involuntarily appeared in his mind, along with all the good times they had shared together. Those scenes played back in his mind like a movie, making him both nostalgic and heartbroken.
For the first time in his life, he experienced insomnia - and it was because of a woman. This feeling was too unfamiliar, because he had never been through this kind of emotional torture before.
Colin tried to numb his nerves by smoking, but each drag felt like a reminder of his loneliness and helplessness. He closed his eyes, trying to calm himself down, but his mind was like a battlefield with countless voices arguing - one telling him he should bravely pursue his love, another telling him that letting go was the best choice.
He sighed. As he turned his head to flick off the ash, his phone suddenly rang.
Since it was so late, Colin didn't immediately think about who would be calling him at this hour, so before seeing the caller ID, his expression was indifferent and even a bit annoyed.
He frowned and picked up his phone with confusion, glancing at the screen.
When he saw that familiar string of numbers showing it was Anna calling, he froze as if paralyzed.
His heart jumped hard in his chest, followed by a few seconds of silence. In that moment, he seemed to lose the ability to think, just staring blankly at the phone screen until he finally snapped out of it after a while.
Colin carefully pressed the answer button, his finger trembling slightly, showing his inner nervousness and anticipation. Because he had smoked too much today, his voice was a bit hoarse, with a barely noticeable catch: "Did you get home?"
As he said these words, he felt like he was waiting for a verdict, so nervous he could almost hear his own heartbeat.
