Chapter 236 Caleb Saved Me
Anna was on the verge of a breakdown. She had never worn such a revealing outfit before.
"Whose clothes are these? They can't be from your ex-girlfriend, right? I don't want them," she said.
Colin shot her a glare. "What ex-girlfriend? You're the only one who's ever been here. These clothes belong to my mom."
Anna looked at Colin suspiciously. "Your mom's? I find that hard to believe."
Colin sighed. "I don't live here regularly. My mom can wear whatever she wants. She said a friend gave her these clothes, and she hasn't worn them yet. Just go to sleep. I won't do anything to you if you don't wear them."
Anna wanted to hit him, but Colin quickly shut the bathroom door. Inside, he wasn't as calm as he pretended to be.
Colin tried hard not to look at her or think about the glimpse of Anna's bare skin he had seen earlier.
He went downstairs to get a glass of water. Once he was out of the room, Anna finally dared to take off the towel and quickly slipped under the covers.
Colin's pillow and blanket smelled just like him, the same scent she had noticed in his office's break room. It was a comforting smell.
She suddenly remembered the first time she met Colin. His face had taken her breath away, the kind of face that makes your heart skip a beat. But she didn't fall for him then because she was already with Caleb.
Lost in these thoughts, Anna fell into a deep sleep. The soft bed, the perfect pillow, the cozy blanket, and the pleasant scent made her sleep soundly. She hadn't felt this peaceful in a long time.
The next morning, she found Colin was already gone. When she went downstairs, she discovered the house was empty.
The maid told her Colin had gone to the office, and Gia had also gone out for something.
Anna didn't want to stay there alone, so she quickly got ready and left.
Her part-time job was successfully completed. Anna returned to her office, but as soon as she reached the entrance, Caleb was there waiting for her.
She was shocked to see him. "What do you want? I have to go to work. Move."
Caleb pleaded, "Just give me five minutes. Please."
Anna reluctantly led him to the side entrance of the building. "What do you want to say?" she asked coldly.
Caleb noticed she wasn't wearing the starry sky necklace but saw a matching bracelet on her wrist. "Who gave you that bracelet?" he asked.
Anna looked at her wrist, annoyed by his questioning tone. "Why? Can't I buy it myself? Does it have to be a gift from someone else? Do you think I can't afford it?"
She couldn't afford it, but she didn't want Caleb to know that.
Caleb quickly explained, "That's not what I meant."
Anna cut him off, "You have four minutes left. What do you want to say?"
Caleb took a deep breath. "Anna, I didn't want to say this, but you misunderstand me so deeply. Yes, I admit I broke up with you right after your family went bankrupt. But I did it because I wanted to become a better person and come back to marry you."
"I risked everything back then. I even mortgaged the car and house you bought me to start a business. You know investments are risky. I was afraid of losing everything and having nothing left to face you with."
"I wanted to come back to you once I succeeded. If I failed, I didn't want to drag you down with me. Anna, I never wanted to leave you. I know you might not wait for me, but I realized only I can make you happy."
"Anna, you don't have anyone else you like. So, give us another chance."
Caleb's words made Anna's heart ache. She hadn't known the truth back then.
Anna felt lost. "Caleb, you're right. No one waits forever."
"But you said you haven't fallen for anyone else. We were so in love. I just wanted to take a chance for you. If I won, I'd come back to marry you. If I lost, I'd disappear."
Anna interrupted him, "Stop. You're just trying to make yourself feel better. You said you didn't want me to share the risk, but do you know how close I was to dying when you broke up with me? You left me at my lowest point. That already showed we weren't on the same path."
Caleb, still unwilling to give up, shouted, "Anna, look into your heart. Do you really feel nothing for me?"
Anna fell silent. Bella had asked her the same question before, and she couldn't answer then. She still couldn't answer now.
After a long pause, Anna said, "I have to go to work. Leave."
This time, Caleb didn't stop her. He watched her walk into the office building, determined to win her back someday and make up for what happened to the Powell family.
Back then, he had wronged the Powell family and Anna, but he had no other choice.
Anna spent the day in a daze. Surprisingly, Colin didn't bother her at all. On her way home, she kept thinking about what Caleb had said.
Anna admitted Caleb's words had affected her. Her feelings were starting to shift.
As she crossed the street, lost in thought, a truck sped towards her. She froze, unable to react.
Just as it was about to hit her, someone pulled her back with a strong grip.
They rolled to the side, crashing into the curb. Anna heard a grunt of pain from the person behind her, likely from hitting the ground hard.
Anna quickly got up. "Caleb, is that you?"
Still shaken, she helped Caleb sit up. "Are you okay?"
Caleb tried to smile but winced in pain, realizing his arm wouldn't move. His face turned pale.
"I'm fine, don't worry," Caleb reassured her.
Anna was terrified. "Where does it hurt?"
She didn't dare move Caleb, afraid of making it worse.
