Chapter 86 Harboring Provocation
Sterling didn't let Owen in on his doubts about Debra; he just needed more proof.
Debra, with her bodyguards in tow, left the hospital, totally clueless that a car was tailing her.
In the hospital room, Bella lay on the bed, tears streaming down her face.
The baby she had wanted so badly was gone before even seeing the world.
Thinking about Debra's evil eyes and smug grin, she felt a burning rage. As for Sterling, she had lost all hope in him.
She stared blankly at the ceiling, tears flowing as memories of the past flooded her mind.
The next morning, Zoey showed up with a nutritious meal.
"Mrs. Windsor, how could you be so careless? If Mr. Windsor knew you were pregnant, he would've been over the moon. He wouldn't have let this happen." She looked at Bella's pale face with concern.
Bella stayed silent.
What was there to say? Sterling didn't believe the baby was his.
Seeing Bella so down, Zoey didn't push it.
Watching Bella barely touch her food, Zoey's heart broke. She tried to comfort her, "Mrs. Windsor, don't worry. Mr. Windsor went to the police station last night. That drunk driver is gonna pay. Mr. Windsor will make sure he spends the rest of his life in jail."
Hearing this, Bella's eyes finally showed a spark. She grabbed Zoey's arm and asked sharply, "You said drunk driving? Who?"
In the chaos of yesterday, she hadn't had time to ask about the driver.
"Who else? The driver from the Foster family who hit you. He's already at the police station and will pay the price." Zoey patted Bella's hand reassuringly.
Bella's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at Zoey, then she cried and shook her head frantically.
She should have known Sterling would cover for Debra, but hearing it still made her heart ache unbearably.
The baby was his too, yet he let the person responsible go.
Since Sterling wouldn't avenge their child, she would do it herself. She would never let that vicious Debra get away with it.
Meanwhile, Sterling left the police station.
"Find that missing fetus. Search the entire city if you have to." He slammed the car door and instructed Ryan.
Sterling didn't believe the fetus would just disappear, nor did he buy the driver's story. He also didn't believe Bella would truly betray him.
Debra was still a bit scared, so she came to the company today to check things out.
"Sterling, look what I brought you?" Debra pushed open the office door, holding a lunchbox.
Seeing her, Sterling's expression softened a bit, but his tone stayed cold. "What are you doing here?"
"Sterling, I'm here to apologize. I had no idea it was our driver who did it yesterday," Debra said, squeezing out a few tears.
"It was all our fault. We'll make it up to Bella. Can you let our driver go? He's like family to me." Of course, this was a lie; she wasn't here to plead for the driver.
Sterling eyed her closely and suddenly asked, "Debra, was it really your driver who hit Bella?"
Debra's face went stiff. She told herself to stay calm and forced a smile, pretending not to get it. "Sterling, what are you talking about?"
Maybe Debra was just that good at faking it, or maybe she really didn't know anything. Either way, he couldn't read her.
"Nothing. Get out. I have work to do." Sterling dismissed her coldly.
Debra wanted to say more, but seeing Sterling's sour expression, she had to leave. Still, she felt Bella got off too easy.
She only lost her baby and wasn't killed outright.
Next time, she'd make sure Bella disappeared for good.
Bella stayed in the hospital for a week.
During that time, only Anna and Zoey, who brought meals, visited her. Sterling never showed up.
When she was discharged, Anna was fuming.
"That jerk Sterling didn't even come to pick you up. Aren't you mad?" Anna felt both heartbroken and helpless for Bella.
"Why should I be mad at a stranger?" Bella said calmly after a moment of silence.
She no longer had any expectations for Sterling, so nothing he did would faze her.
Bella pulled herself together. Though she occasionally thought of the lost baby, she wouldn't wallow in sadness. She needed to recover quickly and make Debra pay for what she had done.
She didn't expect Debra to show up on her first day back at work.
Micah saw Debra's aggressive approach and worriedly asked Bella, "Do you really not need to call security?"
"No, this is between her and me. I'll handle it," Bella said, then turned and walked out.
Debra hadn't seen Sterling for days. She couldn't reach him at the office or on the phone. She thought it must be because of Bella that Sterling wasn't taking her calls.
"Bella, did you badmouth me to Sterling? Is that why he won't see me?" she asked arrogantly, showing no guilt.
Bella wanted to kill her, but with everyone in the lobby watching, she had to endure Debra's disgusting face and said, "If you don't want people to know you're a homewrecker, follow me."
She said it coldly and walked towards the stairwell.
Debra snorted and followed, swaying her hips.
As soon as they entered the stairwell, Bella slapped Debra across the face.
"Debra, can you sleep at night? Aren't you afraid my child will come for you?" Her eyes were red with hatred.
Debra covered her face, glaring at Bella. She hadn't expected Bella to hit her; she thought Bella was weak.
Even after being hit, she mocked Bella, "You must be in more pain than me, right? After all, you lost a child, and this slap is just my repayment."
A crazed look of triumph flashed in Debra's eyes. "Even if I had to do it again, I would. I only regret not killing you then."
Bella trembled uncontrollably at her words.
