Chapter 13 Someone Else's Gift
Bella thought Sterling was asking her to move into his room, so she politely turned him down. "Nah, I'm good with the storage room."
Sterling slammed the book on the table, glaring at her. "Even Zoey's room is better than that dump. If people saw this, they'd think I was treating you like crap."
Bella blushed and looked down. "But, uh, my period's not over yet."
Sterling frowned. "What are you even thinking? I had Zoey set up a room for you on the second floor. Do you really think I'd ask you to bunk with me?"
Bella's eyes widened, realizing she had totally misunderstood.
Sterling waved his hand, annoyed. "Alright, get out. Move your stuff tonight."
Bella bolted out of the study and told Zoey to help her get the room ready.
Zoey was all smiles. "See? I told you, once you give in to Mr. Windsor, life's gonna be way better. What's there to be upset about?"
Bella lifted her chin proudly. "I didn't give in."
Zoey just rolled her eyes and patted Bella's cheek, then started helping her pack.
Sterling watched from upstairs, feeling a bit off. He was the one who cared about Bella the most, but everyone else in the house seemed closer to her.
Zoey quickly packed Bella's few belongings from the storage room and moved them upstairs.
Bella didn't have much, just some clothes and a blanket. Compared to other girls her age, her stuff was easy to pack.
After moving Bella's blanket upstairs, Zoey asked, "Ms. Grey, need help with anything else?"
Bella suddenly remembered her secret stash in the storage room. No one could know about it.
"No, I'll take one last look at the storage room. Lived there long enough, after all." Using nostalgia as an excuse, Bella went back to the storage room.
In the storage room, Bella pried up a rotten floorboard, revealing a hidden box.
She gently lifted the box, a smile spreading across her face.
Inside was the bracelet James had given her.
Suddenly, a hand reached over her shoulder and snatched the box away.
Bella spun around, startled, to see Sterling staring at her with a dark expression.
Her heart raced as Sterling opened the box and took out the bracelet.
"It's a nice one. I should've told you, besides me, you can't accept gifts from anyone else." Sterling's smile was cold.
Then his expression changed. He pulled out the bottom of the box and found a note.
The note read: [I want to hold your hand and grow old with you.]
Sterling's eyes went from dark to furious as he read it.
"Looks like you're quite the catch at school. Which boy gave you this love token?" Sterling's tone was mocking.
Bella took a deep breath and stayed silent, trying to keep James out of trouble.
"I know what you're thinking. To you, I'm just something you own, not letting anyone else near. I get it. If you don't like it, I can toss it, but I'm not answering your questions." Bella's defiant attitude made Sterling even angrier.
