Chapter 429 Angry
"Why are you in such a rush, kid? Go take a shower first. You're all sweaty and you'll mess up the couch," Qiana said, wiping the table with a cloth.
Anna stopped in her tracks and turned to her mother, a hint of exasperation in her eyes. "Mom, can I just sit for a bit? I've been running around all day, my legs are about to give out."
After Anna finished her shower, Qiana immediately asked, "So, how did it go today? Any good news?"
Anna shook her head, her voice tinged with fatigue. "Still no luck. I've sent out a ton of resumes, but they all say they'll get back to me. The competition is really tough right now. The good positions are all taken."
Qiana's lips curled into a slight smile, a complex look in her eyes, but she didn't press the issue further.
She sighed softly, then changed the subject. "And what about Colin? Is he just ignoring the fact that you can't find a job? Are you two okay?"
Anna straightened up reflexively, her tone firm and independent. "Mom, stop jumping to conclusions. He did offer me a job at his place, but I don't want to take it. I want to find a job on my own. I don't want to rely on him! I have my own plans and goals, so don't worry about it."
Seeing Anna's determination, Qiana didn't say anything more, perhaps remembering the lessons from Caleb.
Just as Anna was about to rest in her room, Colin called. She quickly answered, "You're still up?"
On the other end, Colin's voice carried a mix of grievance and frustration, as if the world had abandoned him. "How could I sleep? Are you following some stupid online dating advice, playing hard to get? I can't stand being left alone like this. If you keep ignoring me, I might just run off with someone else!"
Anna couldn't help but laugh at Colin's slightly whiny and threatening tone, her voice tired but full of affection. "Don't be silly. I haven't been reading any dating guides. I've been busy job hunting all day. My legs are killing me. I just got home and was about to relax. I don't have time for those games. You'll have to bear with it for a few days. Once I'm free, I'll make it up to you."
Hearing that Anna was busy with job hunting, Colin's frustration flared up. "You were doing fine at my company before. Why can't you just come back? Are you saying I can't pay you enough, or that my company isn't good enough for you?"
Anna felt a pang of guilt. She knew Colin meant well, but she had her own aspirations. She patiently explained, "Colin, don't be like that. I know you mean well, but I want to prove myself through my own efforts."
Colin didn't know what to say, finally muttering, "I'm going to Sterling tomorrow. Want to come see Bella with me?"
Anna perked up at the mention of Bella, agreeing without hesitation. "Sure, I'd love to see her! When are we leaving? Have you booked the tickets? Send me the flight details, and I'll book the same one."
Colin smiled, quickly checking flight information on his computer. "There's a good flight tomorrow morning. How about that? Send me your ID info, and I'll book it for you. It'll save you the trouble. I'll pick you up, and we'll go together."
Anna agreed happily. "Okay, book it for me. I'll transfer the money to you tomorrow."
She sent her ID information to Colin, feeling excited about seeing Bella. Colin, looking at the transfer notification on his phone, felt a mix of emotions.
Colin had never met a woman like Anna, who insisted on keeping things separate. The women around him usually tried to drain his wallet, but Anna wouldn't even accept a plane ticket from him.
Instead of feeling pleased, Colin felt a sense of distance, as if she was deliberately drawing a line between them. It was a strange feeling, like his heart was being gently squeezed, leaving him uncomfortable and frustrated.
He knew Anna wasn't materialistic and had her own principles. Her independence and self-reliance both impressed and frustrated him. He admired her resilience but was disheartened by the subtle distance between them.
The next day, Colin decided not to pick Anna up, heading straight to the airport instead. He wanted to see if Anna would get upset over this small "inconsiderate" detail.
In his experience, every woman had her moments of pettiness and emotional outbursts. He hoped Anna would show her softer, more dependent side, giving him a sense of balance in their relationship.
However, as he waited at the airport, he received no messages from Anna. Growing anxious, he was about to call her when he saw her arrive on time.
Anna had only a small bag, wearing a simple white dress and comfortable sandals, exuding a fresh and natural vibe. She seemed in good spirits.
Seeing Colin, she smiled brightly, waving enthusiastically. "I'm here!"
Colin, wearing sunglasses, showed no expression, and Anna didn't notice anything amiss. She walked up, naturally linking her arm with his, smiling. "I transferred the money to you. Did you get it? How long are you staying? If you're staying long, I might head back early to keep job hunting."
Colin stood there, feeling a mix of emotions, unsure how to respond to this woman who was so different from anyone he'd ever known.
