Chapter 81 Mira's Request
Mira glanced at Ryan, hoping he'd get out of the car so she and Bella could have some space.
Ryan was at a loss for words. He wasn't a fan of Mira or Debra.
But as Sterling's driver, he had to comply.
Ryan looked over at Bella, trying to gauge her reaction.
Bella closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then opened them and said, "Ryan, step out and give us a few minutes. Come back in three."
"Yes, Mrs. Windsor," Ryan nodded and got out of the car.
Once outside, he checked his watch and started timing.
"You've got three minutes. Say what you need to," Bella said to Mira.
Mira's eyes welled up with tears. "Please, save the Foster family. Sterling turned down our deal. Without his help, we're done for."
Bella chuckled, "You want me to save the Foster family? Are you kidding me?"
Mira shook her head, pulled a piece of paper from her pocket, and handed it to Bella. "I have no other options. Sterling doesn't even like Debra. She's just there to irritate you, or maybe she's just a stand-in for you."
Bella unfolded the paper, her heart skipping a beat. It was a cancer diagnosis.
Mira continued, "Sterling still loves you. It's just that you were never as gentle with him as Debra is, so he treats Debra as a substitute who resembles you."
"You think that sickly sweet act is gentle?" Bella sneered. She wasn't about to cling to Sterling like Debra did.
"Bella, this might be my last plea. I know we don't have much of a mother-daughter bond, but for the sake of the fact that I gave birth to you, help me this once!" Mira begged.
Bella was silent, touching her belly. She was a mother now and understood the struggles of pregnancy.
Just then, Ryan knocked on the window, snapping Bella out of her thoughts.
He pointed at his watch, signaling that time was up.
"Time's up. You can go now," Bella said coldly, not looking at Mira.
"Thanks for giving me this chance. It was nice talking to you," Mira said with a faint smile, then got out of the car.
Ryan got back in and asked, "Mrs. Windsor, should I tell Mr. Windsor that Mira came to see you?"
Bella nodded. "I'll handle it."
Ryan nodded and headed towards the Windsor Villa.
Mira watched the car drive away, her smile tinged with bitterness.
"Bella, I regret it too," Mira said, clenching her fists as tears streamed down her face.
Lucas used to be a co-pilot. He was tall, handsome, and had a bright future. Mira was drawn to him and married him.
But then, during a flight mission, he got reported for smuggling contraband and was fired.
The truth was, it was the captain who was smuggling, but Lucas got framed. With no evidence to clear his name, he spiraled into depression and started drinking.
He was a wreck.
Mira had enough of Lucas and then met the young and charming Dash Foster, Debra's dad, and fell for him.
She had an affair with Dash, divorced Lucas, and left young Bella behind. She thought she'd live the high life again, but Dash was always fooling around with other women. If Mira hadn't gotten pregnant with Debra, he wouldn't have married her.
Now, Mira saw Dash for who he really was.
Compared to him, Lucas was just poor, but he was kind and family-oriented.
If it weren't for Debra, Mira would've left Dash long ago. She'd already made one mistake and didn't want Debra to end up like Bella.
On the way home, Bella's mind was a mess, replaying Mira's medical report over and over.
When she got home, she was surprised to see Debra there.
But Debra didn't look happy. She stormed towards the door, shot Bella a nasty glare, and left in a huff.
"What's her problem? Why's she freaking out?" Bella asked Sterling, confused.
Sterling leaned back on the sofa, looking relaxed. "Debra wants me to invest in her dad's company. With my money, they could keep going, but I said no."
Bella raised an eyebrow and sat down. "Why?"
Sterling looked puzzled. "Why do you care?"
Bella told Sterling about Mira's visit. No point hiding it; Ryan would spill the beans anyway.
Sterling nodded, not surprised. "I don't want to help Debra because of business reasons. Dash's business skills are worse than Peter's."
Bella was taken aback. Why would Sterling say that?
Sterling continued calmly, "I've looked into Dash's company. When his parents were alive, they ran things. After they passed, the company kept going the same way. Dash doesn't get business and has a big ego. He doesn't want to delegate power to people who actually know business, which is why their company's business model keeps falling behind and getting overtaken by others. They're bound to go under sooner or later. Even if I save them now, what about next time? I'm a businessman, after all."
