Chapter 37 The Drunken Husband

Debra was stoked when she saw Sterling passed out drunk. Finally, she could move on to the next part of her plan: dragging him to a hotel and getting it on.

"Sterling, lemme take you home to crash," Debra said, trying to haul him up, but he shoved her away.

"What's that smell on you? It's rank." Sterling, reeking of booze, flopped back onto the couch.

Debra awkwardly sniffed herself but only caught a whiff of her strong perfume. What was he talking about?

Micah smirked; he knew exactly what was up. Sterling wasn't someone she could just waltz up to.

"Forget it, I'll take him home," Micah said, stepping in to help Sterling up.

"I should do it. You both have been drinking and can't drive," Debra insisted, trying again, but Micah dodged her.

Micah shrugged. "I got a cold and didn't drink, so I can drive."

Colin put down his phone and raised his hand. "I can vouch for him. He's been chugging kids' yogurt all night!"

Micah shot Colin a fierce look. Colin stood up and slipped his phone into Sterling’s pocket.

"Don't forget his phone," Colin said, winking at Micah behind Debra's back.

Micah got the hint. Colin must've called Bella to come get Sterling. They weren't dumb; if they handed Sterling over to Debra, he might end up with a kid soon.

Micah helped Sterling towards the bar's exit, with Debra still trailing behind.

"Micah, aren't you taking Sterling home? Why are you still standing here? Did you forget where you parked?" Debra asked, frowning at Micah, who was looking around outside.

Micah wasn't about to tell Debra he was stalling, waiting for Bella to show up.

"Yeah, there weren't this many cars when I got here. Where did I park?" Micah said, deliberately heading towards the right parking lot, even though his car was on the left.

After about ten minutes, even Debra realized Micah was stalling.

'No way, I can't let Micah delay any longer, or Sterling will sober up.' Just as Debra was about to make a move, a car horn blared from across the street.

Micah's eyes lit up as he saw Bella getting out of the car.

Micah helped Sterling across the street. Bella frowned at the sight of the heavily drunk Sterling.

"Why'd he drink so much again?" Bella asked Micah.

Micah rolled his eyes. "You should ask yourself that. Anyway, now that you're here, I'll leave your hubby to you."

As soon as Micah handed Sterling over to Bella, Debra protested loudly.

"Sterling said he was crashing at my place tonight. What's the deal?" Debra glared at Bella, trying to pull Sterling away from her.

This time, Micah didn't step in because Sterling had woken up.

Sterling, half-awake, pushed Debra's hand away. "Get lost, I’m going home."

With that, Sterling stumbled into the back seat with Bella's help.

Bella didn't even glance at Debra, got into the car, and told Owen to hit the gas.

"What's the deal? I was so worried about him, and he tells me to get lost!" Debra fumed at Micah, pointing an accusing finger.

Micah shrugged. "You know how it is; people say all kinds of stuff when they're drunk. Anyway, I'm heading back to my kids' yogurt."

Micah headed back to the bar, leaving Debra steaming alone.

On the ride home, Bella and Sterling leaned against each other, with Sterling's breath reeking of booze.

Bella pulled a wet wipe from her bag and gently wiped Sterling's face. Suddenly, Sterling grabbed Bella's hand and kissed it.

"What are you doing? We're in the car, knock it off!" Bella nervously tried to push Sterling away.

"So what if we're in the car? We’re married," Sterling said, hugging Bella tightly and burying his face in her chest.

Bella's face turned beet red; the position was way too intimate.

"I wanna sleep with you," Sterling said, his voice sounding almost like he was acting cute.

'Is he for real? Sterling acting cute?' Bella thought, wondering if Sterling was just using his drunken state as an excuse.

Bella shook Sterling, but he clung on tightly. They were like melted marshmallows, stuck together.

"Stop it, Owen's driving." Bella urgently tried to wake Sterling, feeling super embarrassed.

Owen, watching through the rearview mirror, looked flustered. He hadn’t expected Bella to drag him into this.

"Just pretend I'm not here. I'm old and hard of hearing; I can't hear a thing you’re saying," Owen said awkwardly, smiling. He had only seen Sterling act like this once before, when he was very young.

After Owen's comment, Bella felt even more embarrassed.

But Bella soon realized that Sterling wasn't taking advantage of her; he was genuinely hammered. Why should she feel weird with her own husband?

Having figured it out, Bella stopped resisting Sterling's embrace. She hugged him back, gently holding him and humming a lullaby.

As Bella's soft singing filled the car, she noticed Sterling's grip loosening. It seemed he had fallen asleep.

Owen, driving, felt a sense of relief. If he weren't driving, he would've whipped out his phone to capture the moment.

However, Sterling suddenly mumbled something that made Bella stop singing.

"Why do you wanna leave me? Haven't I been good to you?" Sterling's muffled voice asked.

Bella thought about everything Sterling had done for her. Materially, she lacked nothing, but she felt like their home was a prison, devoid of freedom.

"If you really wanna leave me, I can let you go, but you gotta give me a kid first," Sterling said, then kissed Bella again, his hand slipping under her clothes.
