Chapter 156 Beck's News

Anna looked puzzled and asked, "If she's not a socialite, would your mom be cool with it?"

Colin didn't say anything. After a long pause, Anna thought he wouldn't answer, but then he suddenly said softly, "If it's you, I might consider it."

Anna stared at him, shocked. "Colin, you're nuts."

From that moment until she got out of the car, Anna didn't say another word to Colin.

When Bella saw Anna, she asked, "Did Colin just drop you off?"

Anna nodded. "Yeah, I don't know what's up with him. Shouldn't we be keeping our distance now? But he insists on driving me."

Bella thought for a moment, unsure what to say. It was pretty clear Colin had feelings for Anna.

"Did he not agree to your resignation?" Bella asked, worried.

Anna nodded. "The resignation needs an approval period, which takes a month. After that, I can leave the company."

Bella just said, "Why did you ask me to meet today?"

Anna suddenly remembered why she had asked Bella to meet. "We got some news about Beck from our last investigation."

Bella's eyes lit up. "Really? What's the situation now?"

Anna said, "The private detective told me yesterday that Beck is now in a nursing home. But it's unclear if he changed his name or what. I heard he's sick. Why don't we go check it out today?"

Bella nodded. "Sure, let's get to the bottom of this while Sterling is not home."

After dinner, they took a cab to the nursing home, which was pretty remote. By the time they got there, it was already 8 PM.

The whole place felt old and creepy, like a haunted house, giving them the chills.

"Anna, are you sure this is a nursing home and not a psychiatric hospital?" Bella looked around, finding it hard to believe anyone could rest peacefully here.

Anna said, "It's nighttime now, so it looks a bit spooky. Let's ask someone."

Anna had asked the private detective to look for a man named Beck Garcia, but now he should be going by Beck Campbell.

"Are you sure he changed his name?" Bella was hesitant, fearing they might be getting their hopes up for nothing.

Anna patted Bella's shoulder. "Even if it's a false lead, we need to check it out."

They asked a nurse about Beck's room, and luckily, the nurse was helpful and didn't give them a hard time.

Bella and Anna quietly walked to Beck's room. Through the small window on the door, they saw he was still awake, sitting by the window, lost in thought.

Bella and Anna exchanged a glance, and then Anna raised her hand and knocked on the door.

Beck snapped out of his thoughts and said, "Come in."

When Anna and Bella entered, Beck stared at them, confused. "Who are you?"

Beck was sure he had never seen them before.

Bella stayed quiet, so Anna spoke first. "Mr. Garcia, have you had dinner?"

Hearing Anna call him that, Beck immediately knew who the two girls were, and his expression darkened.

Anna had deliberately called him "Mr. Garcia" to see if he was the Beck who had written the letter and to gauge his reaction.

But Beck didn't seem surprised to see them. He just sat there, calmly looking at them and said, "My last name isn't Garcia, but I know you're here looking for him."

Now it was their turn to be stunned. Bella pressed on, "If you're not Mr. Garcia, do you know where he is?"

Beck replied, "He died a long time ago, of cancer. So there's no need for you to come anymore."

They clearly didn't believe him. Beck's eagerness to get rid of them was suspicious.

Bella said, "Mr. Campbell, you say you're not Beck Garcia? Yet you know we're looking for him. How did you know that? How can you be so sure we're here for him?"

Beck was momentarily speechless, not expecting Bella to be so sharp. He didn't say anything for a while.

Anna then casually said, "It's strange that a dead man would write emails. Don't you think that's odd, Mr. Campbell?"

Beck looked at them and said, "Don't think I'm lying to you. The letter was written by Mr. Garcia before he died. I just did him a favor by sending it to you."

Bella smiled and said, "You knew the letter was meant for us?"

Beck didn't respond immediately, unsure of what these two women wanted in the middle of the night.

He then continued, "I only remembered recently. My neighbor told me you had come looking for Mr. Garcia at my place. So I wrote the emails under his name to tell you not to look for him anymore. He's dead, and you won't find him. And you won't get any information from me either because he didn't tell me anything. I'm here just trying to live a bit longer. I'm also sick and won't live much longer. If you have any respect for the elderly, please don't disturb my peace. I don't want to get involved in any more danger."

Beck's words made Bella feel strange. He seemed to know everything but was hiding something. But in any case, he didn't want to talk. It seemed he was also wary of something.

Bella couldn't figure out if he was Beck Campbell or Beck Garcia. But she noticed the expensive fruits and supplements on his bedside table, indicating someone of high status had visited him.

Seeing that he remained silent, Bella said, "Mr. Campbell, is there really nothing you want to tell us? Do you have some secret you can't reveal?"

Beck closed his cloudy eyes, his breathing a bit labored, and said, "There's nothing. I just want to spend my remaining days peacefully. I don't want to get involved in any more danger. I just want to quietly wait for death."

Anna was frustrated. After all the effort and months of investigation, it was going to end like this. What was this?

If he had directly admitted he knew Beck Garcia, it would have ruled out the possibility that he was Beck Garcia. But by saying Beck Garcia was dead, he was cutting off Bella's lead.
