Chapter 84 Conspiracy
Sterling was going through some reports in his office when his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and his face tightened.
James was calling.
Sterling smirked as he picked up. "What, begging for mercy now?"
But James's voice was frantic. "I'm not begging, you jerk. Get to the hospital! Bella was in a car accident, and she lost the baby!"
Sterling's expression shifted in an instant. He bolted out of the office, barking orders for his team to drive him to the hospital.
On the way, his face was a storm. When he got there, he saw James slumped outside the operating room, Bella's blood still on his clothes.
Sterling yanked James up and socked him in the face. "What the hell happened? Spill it!"
James looked miserable. "We were talking at a café. When we left, a car hit her, and she lost the baby."
"Baby? Why the hell didn't I know she was pregnant?" Sterling's voice was ice.
James shot him a bitter smile. "Cut the crap! Your control over her is suffocating. She didn't want you using the baby to tighten your grip."
Sterling's rage flared, and he punched James again.
Just then, Ryan burst in, looking panicked.
"Mr. Windsor, the police called. Someone confessed. The driver who hit Mrs. Windsor is Debra's family chauffeur. He says he was drunk." Ryan reported.
Sterling's face darkened. He didn't buy that it was just a coincidence.
Suddenly, the light above the operating room door went out, and a doctor came out, pushing Bella on a gurney.
Bella looked pale and exhausted, her eyes shut tight.
"We saved her, but we couldn't save the baby," the doctor said, sounding regretful.
Sterling's fists clenched. He took one last look at Bella, then stormed out, heading to the police station to get to the bottom of it.
James followed the doctor, pushing Bella's bed to the ward.
No one noticed a figure in a doctor's uniform slipping into the operating room and leaving quickly with a jar in hand.
Bella's mind drifted into darkness, like she was sinking into a deep lake.
The water pressed in on her, squeezing the air from her lungs.
She wanted to fight, to escape, but she couldn't. She could only watch in despair as she sank deeper.
Suddenly, a tiny hand grabbed her finger and pulled her towards the surface.
It was a baby.
Bella couldn't see the baby's face underwater, but she felt a strange familiarity, like the baby was smiling at her.
"Goodbye, Mommy."
Bella faintly heard a child's voice, and then her face broke the surface of the water, and her mind snapped back to reality.
As soon as she woke up, she could hear Anna and James arguing.
"I don't buy that it was Debra's driver! This has Debra written all over it. Even if she didn't do it herself, she planned it. I swear I'll make her pay!" Anna fumed.
James tried to calm her down. "It won't help! Sterling's at the police station. We have to trust the police to get to the bottom of this."
Anna exploded. "Get out of my way! I don't trust the police! I want that witch to know what it's like to get hit by a car." Her scream startled James.
He remembered how Anna's family had lost everything after their jewelry was stolen and the police never caught the thief. That incident had led to their bankruptcy and current struggles.
"Anna..." Bella on the bed struggled to speak, her voice barely a whisper.
Anna and James rushed to her side.
"Bella, you're awake! How do you feel? Are you in pain?" Anna asked, tears streaming down her face.
Bella didn't answer. She looked down at her abdomen. "My baby..."
Silence fell over the room.
Tears rolled down Bella's cheeks.
The new life inside her had been snuffed out before it even had a chance.
James spoke gently, "Right now, you need to rest and recover. The police will find out the truth."
A look of hatred flashed in Bella's eyes. "It was Debra. She hit me. I saw her!"
"See? I told you it was that witch Debra. I'm going to kill her," Anna said, heading for the door.
James had to pull her back again.
"Calm down. Bella needs you here! If you go to jail, she'll have no one," he whispered urgently.
Anna looked at the crying Bella and finally calmed down.
She sat by Bella's side and tried to comfort her. "Bella, don't worry. The baby was Sterling's. He won't let Debra get away with this."
"Was the baby really mine?" Sterling's voice came from the doorway.
Bella saw Sterling standing there, cold as ice, with a sobbing Debra behind him.
"Bella, I can't believe our driver did this to you! We've already convinced him to turn himself in. I'm so sorry," Debra said, tears streaming down her face.
Bella ignored Debra and stared at Sterling. "What did you mean by that? You don't believe it was your baby?"
Before Sterling could answer, Debra cut in.
"Bella, Sterling wants to believe it was his baby, but we need a DNA test. But we just got word that the fetus you miscarried is missing. Someone might have taken it," she said, sneaking a glance at James.
