Chapter 417 Jealousy
However, she decided not to remind Sable, as it was a pretty embarrassing thing to bring up.
Sable took the suit, clearly surprised that Bella had asked her to return it.
Without saying a word, Sable held the suit in one hand, glanced at the desserts and coffee in the other, and headed out of the bakery. As she stepped out the door, she turned back to look at Bella, like she wanted to say something, but ultimately stayed quiet.
Bella watched Sable's figure fade through the door, silently praying, "I hope Sterling doesn't notice the awkward 'little secret' when he gets the suit."
Back at the office, Sable carefully placed the desserts and coffee on Sterling's desk and softly said, "Mr. Windsor, Mrs. Windsor asked me to bring this suit to you."
Sable emphasized "Mrs. Windsor," hoping Sterling would get the hint about where the suit came from.
Sterling was reviewing documents. When he heard Sable, his eyes darkened a bit. He looked up at her and said indifferently, "Just put it anywhere." His focus stayed on the documents, showing little interest in the suit.
Sable felt a bit tense. She knew Sterling was in a bad mood, so she quickly picked up the suit, intending to place it in the nearby cabinet. But as she moved, a pair of men's underwear tucked inside the suit became partially visible.
Sable's face turned bright red instantly. She never expected such an embarrassing situation. She could clearly recognize men's underwear, and her heart felt like it was burning with embarrassment.
Sable hurriedly rearranged the suit, trying to hide the underwear, and quickly placed the suit in the cabinet. After completing this task, she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down.
Sterling didn't notice this detail; he was still focused on reviewing the documents. Sable glanced at him, feeling relieved that he hadn't discovered the embarrassing secret.
After putting away the suit, Sable didn't sit down in the office. Instead, she walked into the break room, poured herself a glass of water, and stood by the window, quietly drinking. Her thoughts were as fleeting and heavy as the clouds outside.
Reflecting on her position in the company, she realized she was indeed different. People respected and flattered her largely because she was Sterling's secretary.
Some even speculated privately about an undisclosed relationship between her and Sterling. She had heard these rumors before but never paid them much mind.
Sable knew Sterling was always a by-the-book person, discussing only work and never personal matters with her.
However, since coming to this branch office, everything seemed to have subtly changed. Initially, Sterling hadn't planned to bring her along, but now he took her with him every day, sharing the same car and entering the company together. This close interaction made her feel differently.
Sable had to admit, Sterling was an incredibly charming man, like a star high in the sky, making people look up and yearn. For others, he might be truly unattainable, but for her, he seemed within reach.
Returning to the office, Sable quickly adjusted her mindset, regaining her usual calm and focus.
The entire space felt particularly quiet. Her desk was directly opposite Sterling's, close enough for her to observe every subtle expression on his face.
Seeing this, Sable felt it was a rare opportunity to try talking to Sterling about his personal matters. Although she knew it might touch on Sterling's privacy, she couldn't help but speak up.
"Mr. Windsor, have you made any progress with Mrs. Windsor?" Sable's voice was gentle and probing, trying to sound natural and not provoke Sterling's displeasure. She knew the relationship between Sterling and Bella was complicated, though she didn't know the specifics, she could sense the tension between them.
Sterling's eyes flickered slightly, seemingly surprised by Sable's sudden question. He was silent for a moment before slowly speaking, "That's between us; you don't need to worry about it." His tone was calm but carried an undeniable firmness.
Sable felt a slight chill, realizing she might have been too forward. She quickly nodded, indicating she understood, "Yes, Mr. Windsor, I spoke out of turn." She then lowered her head and continued with her work, saying no more.
Sterling thought for a moment and decided it wouldn't hurt to talk to Sable. Despite telling her not to worry, he unexpectedly didn't mind her question. Instead, he felt he had found someone to confide in and opened up, "Sorry, I was too harsh earlier. Tell me, is it really that hard to keep a woman by your side? You're a woman; do you have any good insights?"
Sterling's tone carried a hint of fatigue and helplessness, clearly indicating that his emotional entanglement with Bella was causing him considerable distress.
Sable was slightly moved by his words, surprised that Sterling would be so candid about his feelings.
After thinking for a moment, Sable said, "Mr. Windsor, I think the quickest way to get a woman close to a man might be jealousy. For example, if your attention was always on Mrs. Windsor and suddenly you stopped focusing on her and started paying attention to another woman, Mrs. Windsor would definitely feel upset."
Sterling frowned slightly, contemplating Sable's words. Sable continued, "Actually, no woman is immune to jealousy, no matter what has happened or how strained things are. Jealousy might not be directly related to the degree of affection. Take my husband and me, for instance. Over time, we've naturally entered a period of fatigue, with little communication, and often I find him quite annoying. But if another woman tries to get close to him, I would instinctively not allow it."
Sterling listened to Sable's words, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. He seemed to find some resonance in Sable's experience and began to reflect on his relationship with Bella. He understood that jealousy might not be a healthy way to interact, but sometimes it could indeed bring two people closer.
Sterling nodded thoughtfully, his eyes showing a hint of doubt, "Do you think this method would work for me?" He was clearly weighing the feasibility of this approach.
