Chapter 62 Who's the Donor
When Anna got back to the ward, Qiana grabbed her with some exciting news.
"Anna, the doctor just told us that someone kind-hearted has covered your dad's surgery costs," Qiana said, practically bouncing.
Anna frowned. She'd been reaching out to all of Peter's old friends while he was in the hospital, but none of them had been willing to help out with money.
This sudden donor thing felt really weird to Anna.
"Mom, do you have any idea who donated the money?" Anna asked.
Qiana shook her head. "The doctor said the donor wanted to stay anonymous. They don't want us to know who they are."
Anna thought for a second and then Bella popped into her mind.
"Mom, you stay here with Dad. I need to make a call." Anna left the ward and dialed Bella's number.
At that moment, Bella was on her way to Windsor Villa.
After meeting with James that day, Ryan had driven Bella straight home, and Sterling hadn't shown up.
On the drive, Bella noticed Ryan acting all weird. Finally, after some prodding, Ryan spilled the beans.
"Mrs. Windsor, Mr. Windsor found out about your meeting with James. He was really mad and told me to take you home," Ryan said, looking a bit helpless.
"Is he jealous? Seriously, James and I just bumped into each other at the coffee shop. I had no idea he'd be there. We were just talking about Anna," Bella explained.
Ryan shook his head and gave a wry smile. "Mrs. Windsor, telling me this won't help. You need to make Mr. Windsor believe you."
Bella pulled out her phone, ready to text Sterling, but then she hesitated and put it away.
"Forget it. If Sterling trusted me, he'd ask me about it instead of just sending me away. Even if I explain, he'll just think I'm lying," Bella said, staring out the window.
Just then, Bella's phone rang. It was Anna.
"Bella, thank you. Did you get the money for my dad's medical expenses from Sterling?" Anna's question threw Bella for a loop.
Bella was surprised and said, "Anna, it wasn't me. I thought about it, but I haven't had the chance to ask Sterling for money yet."
Anna was confused. "Really? It wasn't you? But we got a donation for the surgery today."
"It really wasn't me. Could it be James?" Bella wondered, but then shook her head. Given their friendship, if it were him, he wouldn't have done it anonymously.
"Maybe I guessed wrong. If it were you two, you wouldn't have donated anonymously. Who could it be?" Anna was stumped.
Anna also thought of Colin, but she figured since she'd only met him twice, it was unlikely he'd be the one to donate.
Bella had another idea. "Could it be your boyfriend Caleb? You guys had a fight, right? Maybe he was too embarrassed to tell you, so he donated anonymously."
Anna thought that made sense, so she hung up and called Caleb.
When Caleb picked up, he sounded confused. "You got it wrong. I didn't donate that money. I'm busy, don't call me again."
He hung up, leaving Anna even more frustrated. 'He wouldn't have donated the money with that attitude. No way.'
After hanging up, Bella hesitated for a moment and then told Ryan to take her to the hospital where Anna was. The fact that Anna accepted the donation meant the Powell family's situation was worse than she thought.
But Ryan gave a wry smile and said, "Mrs. Windsor, Mr. Windsor's orders were to take you to the villa, not the hospital. You know I can't go against his orders. I don't want to end up like Owen and get fired. Maybe you should call him first?"
Bella knew Ryan couldn't disobey Sterling, so she called him.
The phone rang twice before Sterling picked up.
"Anna's dad is in trouble. I need to go to the hospital to see him. Can you let Ryan take me there?" Bella asked quickly.
"Okay, tell Ryan to drive safely and take it slow," Sterling's gentle voice came through the phone, surprising both Bella and Ryan.
After Sterling hung up, Bella looked at Ryan, puzzled.
"Are you sure he was angry before?" Bella asked.
Ryan thought for a moment and then understood. "Mr. Windsor must have someone else with him, and this person isn't as close as Micah or Colin."
Bella nodded. Sterling only showed his gentle side in front of outsiders.
"He's quite the actor," Bella muttered.
Ryan heard her but pretended not to.
Meanwhile, Sterling was at Xavier's house.
There was a cup of coffee on the table in the reception room, but Sterling didn't touch it. He had more pressing questions.
"Are you really not going to tell me about my father's illegitimate child?" Sterling asked Xavier with a smile.
Sterling had come to Xavier to find out about his father's illegitimate child, as he couldn't dig up any information on his own.
But Xavier kept shaking his head, saying he was just drunk and talking nonsense, and Sterling shouldn't take it seriously.
"You know, I tend to talk nonsense when I'm drunk," Xavier laughed heartily.
Sterling didn't laugh. He didn't believe Xavier; he was sure Xavier knew something.
"By the way, my daughter Nia should be back soon. It's been ten years since you last saw each other. She used to like you the most," Xavier suddenly changed the subject to his daughter, Nia Getty.
Sterling sighed inwardly. He knew Xavier didn't want to spill the beans. His visit today was a bust, so he had to go along with the conversation about Nia.
