Chapter 128 Selective Amnesia
Bella noticed Sterling's calm demeanor and felt at a loss for words, especially since he seemed a bit impatient the whole time.
She suddenly remembered what Nia had told her last night. If Sterling really saw her as just a plaything, why did he stay out all night and get drunk after their argument? Why was he upset with her?
Shouldn't Sterling be indifferent about their argument?
Thinking about this, Bella felt a tightness in her chest. She wanted to ask Sterling if he was truthful last night or if he had lied to her.
After a moment, Bella asked, "Why didn't you come back last night?"
Sterling's hand holding the pen suddenly stiffened. He said, "What does it matter to you whether I come home or not? You don't want to see me, do you?"
Bella didn't want to argue with him. She softly asked again, "Are you coming home for dinner tonight? You drank so much last night. Your stomach isn't good; you shouldn't drink so much in the future."
Sterling looked at Bella and said, "You want me to quit smoking, and now I can't drink either? Do you think I'm the type of guy who stays away from cigarettes and alcohol?"
Yes, Sterling had quit smoking because of something she mentioned. Actually, thinking about it, Sterling sometimes did care about her. But why did he say those things?
The more Bella thought about it, the more she felt she needed to ask clearly. Otherwise, she would feel even worse. "Last night you said we're not family, that I'm just your plaything. Is that true?"
Bella's voice was very soft, but Sterling's face suddenly turned livid. He forcefully threw the pen on the table and said, "Bella, this is the office. We only talk business here, not personal matters. Take your documents and leave quickly. Don't make me regret signing this contract."
Hearing this, Bella quickly gathered the contract and left. She didn't want her personal issues to jeopardize Micah's company's cooperation opportunity.
Bella didn't ask Sterling what he really thought. But the obsession in her heart had already formed.
When Bella returned to the company, Micah specifically told her she didn't need to work overtime. But seeing that everyone in the office hadn't left yet, she felt embarrassed to leave first. She didn't want to be special, nor did she want to go home and face Sterling.
She ended up working overtime until after 9 PM. When she got back, she felt guilty. She was afraid Sterling would hold it against her again, but she really didn't do it on purpose. She intended to work just a bit late, but it ended up being past 9 PM.
When Bella returned, Nia was waiting at the door. Upon seeing Nia, she smiled.
However, Nia replied, "Don't smile foolishly. Sterling is still very angry upstairs. You should go quickly."
Bella thought for a moment and then went upstairs without saying anything. After she finished her shower, she found Sterling already in the room.
Sterling suddenly looked at her and asked, "You still know to come back this late? Are you planning to live at that lousy company of yours?"
Bella knew she was in the wrong and said, "No, my colleagues were working overtime. I felt embarrassed to leave first. Besides, Micah said the company is about to change ownership. Do you know about this? I guess everyone in the company is super busy now, so I had no choice but to work late."
Sterling didn't really listen to Bella's explanation. He just snorted and said, "The weather's getting colder. You come back so late and don't even think to call me?"
Bella quickly nodded and said, "Okay, I'll call you tomorrow."
Sterling didn't say anything more, just lay down to sleep, and Bella also got into bed. They slept quietly, back to back.
It seemed like they both selectively forgot the previous argument, and neither brought it up again.
The next day, Bella went to work as usual. But as soon as she entered the company, she saw Anna rushing to her desk and asked, "Where's Micah? Why isn't he here yet?"
Bella handed her a tissue to wipe the sweat off her forehead and said, "Why are you in such a hurry? He should be here soon."
Anna, panting heavily, said, "You don't know. Colin gave me a document yesterday and told me to get Micah's signature. But I got busy and forgot. Now I'm rushing."
Bella laughed and said, "You're so careless. If I were Colin, I would have fired you already."
Just then, Micah arrived. Anna grabbed him and said, "Quick, sign this for me."
Micah, confused by Anna's urgency, asked, "Sign what?"
Anna grabbed the pen from Bella's desk, shoved it into Micah's hand, opened the document, and pointed to the signature spot, saying, "Hurry, I'm in a rush. Sign it quickly."
Micah, bewildered, signed the document under pressure. Then Anna rushed out quickly. After she was out of sight, Micah, still confused, asked, "What did she just have me sign? It better not be a contract to sell myself."
Bella joked, "If it were a contract to sell yourself, someone would probably be on their way to arrest you by now."
After a few jokes, Bella and Micah went into the office.
Bursting into the office, Anna just caught Colin entering. Panting heavily, she gasped, "Mr. Rivera, I got the document signed for you."
Colin looked at Anna, who was out of breath and red-faced. He poured a glass of water from the table and handed it to her, saying, "Did you participate in a track meet this morning?"
Anna pointed to the document and said, "I went to get the signature for you."
Colin squinted at Anna, who stood her ground. He snorted and said, "I remember giving you this document yesterday. What were you doing that you only got it signed now?"
Anna scratched her head, a bit embarrassed, and said, "I forgot yesterday."
Colin said, "Forgot? You weren't moonlighting again, were you?"
Anna immediately swore, "No, I wasn't moonlighting. Don't worry, Mr. Rivera. I only work for you. I won't look for a second job."
Colin snorted and then tapped her head with the document, saying, "It better be that way."
Anna nodded repeatedly, took a deep breath, and walked out of the office, complaining in her heart that this job wasn't easy.
But as soon as she left the office, her phone rang. She opened it and saw a bank transaction notification email. She instantly had a bad feeling and didn't dare to open it to see the specific transaction details.
