Chapter 284 Too Much Money to Spend

The two exchanged a knowing smile, and the tension eased.

"What do you make of last night?" Colin tossed the file he was holding onto the table.

Sterling picked it up and saw it was the info on the driver from last night. He glanced at it briefly before closing it.

"Caleb will mess up when he gets desperate," Sterling said casually.

"So you're saying we should just sit tight?" Colin asked, clearly annoyed.

Sterling sighed. "Caleb's caused me enough headaches to keep me busy for a while. Now that he's wanted by the cops, he probably won't show his face for a bit. Last night, he likely saw you with Anna and wanted to test you. His target might be Anna, so keep an eye on her."

Colin nodded. "In Harborvale, on my turf, he wouldn't dare try anything."

Just then, Sterling handed Colin a document. "Here, take this."

"What's this?" Colin asked, picking up the file and opening it.

Colin frowned and looked up at Sterling. "What's the deal with this? Are you messing with me?"

Sterling walked over to Colin and patted his injured shoulder, causing Colin to wince in pain.

"This is what you deserve. That plot of land in the East End, I know you've wanted it for a long time. They wouldn't sell it to you, so I pulled some strings. Now it's yours, fair and square," Sterling said casually.

Colin swallowed hard. "That's a $300 million project in the East End, and you're just giving it to me?"

"What? Can't I be generous to my friends for once? I gave Micah a project of equal value too. You know I, Sterling, never shortchange my friends."

Especially those who have risked their lives for him.

Colin couldn't help but laugh. "Do you have so much money you can't spend it all? Just giving it away everywhere."

Sterling smiled, not denying it.

Anna felt like life was returning to how it used to be, except she didn't want to go to work, see Colin, or meet anyone.

But her avoidance was starting to irritate Qiana.

When Qiana asked her for the eightieth time when she and Caleb were getting married, Anna finally snapped.

"Mom, Caleb and I broke up. We broke up, do you understand? Stop bringing him up." Anna said, sitting on the couch with a blank expression.

Qiana was stunned for a few seconds. "What? Broke up again? You were already talking about marriage. What are you doing?"

Anna couldn't bring herself to tell Qiana about Caleb's actions, so she said, "I broke up with him. I don't think we're right for each other, okay?"

Qiana was furious. "You're just asking for trouble. Caleb is such a good man, and you still think he's not good enough. What kind of man are you looking for?"

Anna had been feeling miserable lately. She stood up and shouted, "What do you mean I'm asking for trouble? You only think Caleb is good because he has money now, and he's Sterling's brother. Otherwise, you wouldn't have agreed to us being together, right?"

"Speaking of money, let me remind you, the person who was going to give you a house is gone. You'll have to pay for the new house yourself. Stop wasting your money and experience some hard times. Don't ask for trouble."

Anna wanted to say, "Do you know where Caleb's money comes from? It's from the Powell family, who were ruined for it."

Qiana's face turned red and white with anger. "What are you talking about? I'm just looking out for you. I've already told everyone about the wedding, and now you're backing out. What are you doing if not asking for trouble?"

Anna felt she couldn't reason with Qiana and didn't want to argue with her. She turned and ran out of the house.

On the empty street, the dim streetlights stretched Anna's lonely figure.

She was wearing high heels, walking tiredly, when she suddenly twisted her ankle.

The pain forced her to take off her high heels and carry them, walking barefoot on the rough ground, each step feeling like she was stepping on needles.

Thinking about the argument with Qiana, Anna felt sad and helpless. She took out her phone and called Bella.

When the call connected, Anna's voice trembled slightly, but she tried to control her emotions and not let her crying show.

"Bella, I argued with my mom. She asked why I broke up with Caleb. How can I tell her that Caleb is the Powell family's enemy?"

Bella was stunned for a moment, then anxiously asked, "You argued again? Where are you now? I hear cars passing by. Are you not at home?"

Anna sniffed and looked around, realizing she didn't know where she was. "I don't know where I am. It's okay, I just feel a bit sad. I just need you to listen to me vent."

Bella felt terrible hearing Anna's distress. She pushed away the hands that were bothering her, put on a robe, and went to the bathroom.

Bella hadn't expected Anna to call at such an awkward moment. She couldn't let Sterling continue, or it would be too embarrassing if Anna heard.

"I'm listening," Bella said softly. "Don't be too sad. Qiana will understand someday. For now, find a safe place to sit and tell me your exact location. I'll come get you."

Anna nodded and followed Bella's instructions, finding a bench by the street to sit on. She looked at the empty road, feeling a mix of emotions.

Bella, meanwhile, comforted her while quickly getting dressed to go out and find her.

But when she turned to look at Sterling, she couldn't help but laugh. He was sitting on the bed, staring at her, clearly unhappy about being interrupted.

Sensing Sterling's mood, Bella felt a bit nervous.

To ease the tension, she mustered the courage to speak in a slightly shy tone. "Sterling, Anna is really important to me. Can you help me out? We can do that anytime later."

After saying this, Bella's cheeks turned slightly red, surprised at her own honesty.

Sterling closed his eyes, seemingly trying to calm himself. Then he slowly extended his hand, his voice deep and magnetic. "Come here."

Bella felt a warmth in her heart and obediently walked over to him.

Sterling pulled her into his arms with such force it felt like he wanted to merge her into his bones, guiding her hand downward.

"Take care of me first," Sterling's voice was hoarse, with a hint of tremble. "Then I'll take you to her."

Bella didn't know his exact feelings at the moment, but she shyly nodded, planning to make it quick so she could find Anna soon.
