Chapter 67 The Powell Family's Bad News
Bella had always known that nothing good ever came out of Debra's mouth. So, when Debra started her usual tirade, Bella's face stayed as calm as ever.
"Are you done yet? If I remember right, your mom told me your family still needs Sterling's help with money. So, you guys must be close to going broke, huh? If it gets worse, just sell the house and get a smaller one. Less space to clean, anyway," Bella said with a cold smile, shaking off Debra's hand and heading for the elevator.
"How dare you curse my family with bankruptcy! I'll beat you to death, you bitch!" Debra yelled, swinging her hand at Bella.
Bella, now a mother-to-be, wasn't about to let anyone harm her unborn child. She quickly grabbed Debra's hand and slapped her hard across the face.
The slap echoed just as the elevator doors opened.
Micah stepped out, looking completely confused by the scene.
"What are you two doing?" Micah asked, just as Debra let out another scream.
"Bella, you bitch, how dare you hit me!" Debra screeched, lunging at Bella with her nails out.
Bella stepped back. Micah quickly moved forward and grabbed Debra's hand.
"If you two keep this up, I'll call Sterling and let him watch you two go at it," Micah threatened, frowning.
Debra didn't want to look bad in front of Sterling, so she stomped her foot and started crying to Micah.
"Micah, she hit me," Debra said angrily, pointing at Bella.
Bella sneered and pointed to the surveillance camera near the elevator. "Should we check the footage? Let's see who started it. I was just defending myself."
Hearing about the footage, Debra calmed down and looked at Micah with a pout.
"Micah, you'll help me, right?" Debra said sweetly.
'I don't want to help you at all. Your voice is driving me nuts,' Micah thought to himself.
"I don't want to get involved in Sterling's family drama. So, what are you here for?" Micah asked, frowning at Debra.
Debra continued in a sugary tone, "I've met some pretty friends recently, and we're planning a party. We're short on handsome men, so I wanted to ask if you and Colin would join?"
Micah raised an eyebrow, guessing Debra's game.
'Debra thinks she can win me and Colin over, then have us talk her up to Sterling. She really underestimates him. Does she think our words will sway him?' Micah thought, then nodded.
"Send me the time and place later, and I'll see if I can make it," Micah agreed, just wanting to get rid of Debra and avoid more drama between her and Bella.
Hearing Micah agree, Debra shot Bella a triumphant look, snorted, and strutted out of the company.
Bella snorted back, not even bothering to look at her.
Micah covered his face and sighed. "Looks like I need to hire a security guard for the company. From now on, anyone who doesn't belong here must be stopped."
"Should've done that ages ago," Bella teased.
Just as Bella and Micah were about to step into the elevator, Micah's phone buzzed in his pocket.
It was Colin calling.
Micah answered, frowning, and gave Bella a weird look.
"Why are you at that hospital? With your mom for a check-up? Got it. Bella's right here with me. I'll let her know. Alright, we're heading over now," Micah said, hanging up and slipping his phone back in his pocket.
Bella looked at Micah, puzzled, knowing the call had something to do with her.
Micah shrugged. "Colin ran into Anna at the hospital. Anna's dad, Peter, had a failed surgery and passed away. Do you want to go over there? I'll drive you."
Bella's face went pale.
At the hospital, Anna and her mom, Qiana, were crying their hearts out over Peter, who was no longer breathing.
The funeral home's car arrived to take Peter's body away.
With limited space in the car, only one person could go. Qiana got in the car, leaving Anna standing alone at the hospital entrance.
The rain started to fall, and Anna stood there, dazed, letting it soak her clothes.
An umbrella, held by Colin, appeared over Anna's head.
Anna lowered her head and said softly, "My dad was so good to me. No matter how unreasonable my requests were, he always tried to fulfill them. Even if I asked for the stars, he'd try to get them for me, even if it was just a glowing piece of paper. But now he's gone, and no one will love me like that anymore."
Colin hesitated, then gently patted Anna's back. "You know, our elders say that when people die, they become stars in the sky. Don't be too sad. Maybe your dad is watching you from up there. When you look up at night, the first star you see will be him."
Anna couldn't hold back anymore and started crying loudly, hugging Colin tightly. She needed the comfort of an embrace, no matter who it was, even if it was a stranger.
A car was parked not far away, and a woman's cough could be heard from inside.
The driver looked at the scene outside and said to the woman in the back, "Mrs. Rivera, should I call Mr. Rivera over?"
"Haven't you ever been in love? If you call him now, you'll get scolded. Leave him alone; let's go back." The middle-aged woman waved her hand, and the car drove into the rain.
Colin looked at Anna, who was crying in his arms, and hesitated for a moment before gently hugging her.
"But it's going to be cloudy for the next few days! Where am I supposed to see stars?" Anna cried.
Colin's mouth twitched.
'I was just trying to comfort you. Why do you have to take it so literally?' Colin thought but didn't say out loud.
When Anna had cried enough in Colin's arms, she slowly lifted her head and gently pushed him away.
"Thanks for the umbrella," Anna said, turning to leave, but then she saw Caleb standing not far away with an umbrella.
