Chapter 355
Jennifer looked pretty upset. "So, I'm just supposed to let her slap me and do nothing?"
Eric laughed, his eyes dark and intense. "When she marries into our family, you'll have plenty of chances to get back at her. Once you've had your revenge, I'll smooth things over."
Hearing this, Jennifer finally smiled and nodded. "Alright, but you better not defend her later!"
"Don't worry. You're my sister. You'll always come first."
Jennifer nodded. "Okay, I'll make sure to get on her good side and create opportunities for you two to meet."
Eric smiled with satisfaction. "You're really something!"
He was determined to win over Constance!
Back at the Drake Villa, Constance noticed only Xavier was home, and everyone else was missing, a look of confusion crossing her face.
Constance asked, "Xavier, where are Brandon, Samuel, and Caleb? Fabian told me you all would be home for dinner tonight."
Xavier closed the file in his hands and looked up at Constance. "They had some urgent business at the company."
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his hair meticulously combed, and his shirt buttoned all the way up. He wore gold-rimmed glasses, giving off a vibe of refined villainy.
Constance looked disappointed and nodded. "Alright."
Xavier raised an eyebrow. "Not happy it's just me having dinner with you?"
"Of course, it's been ages since the five of us had dinner together!"
Xavier chuckled, a doting look in his eyes. "If you call them now, they'll come back immediately."
Constance shook her head. "No need. If they come back for dinner, they'll have to work late into the night."
Xavier teased, "I gave you the chance, but you chose to give it up."
Seeing the teasing look in Xavier's eyes, Constance looked at him with some dissatisfaction. "You're always teasing me!"
Xavier didn't deny it and instead asked how her work at Luminary Ventures Group had been these past few days.
Constance replied, "Everything's fine except for an annoying colleague."
"Need my help?"
Constance waved her hand. "It's just a clown. No need for you to step in. I can handle it myself."
Knowing she wasn't the type to suffer losses, Xavier smiled. "Alright. Grant at Luminary Ventures Group is quite capable. His designs are different from your style, but there's a lot you can learn from him. I arranged for you to go to Luminary Ventures Group to see his design style."
"Got it."
Xavier said, "Let's go. Dinner's ready. The chef made your favorite roasted chicken wings today."
Timothy and Eliza were attending a banquet tonight, so they weren't home for dinner. After dinner, Xavier received a call and went to the office to handle some work.
Constance sat in the living room watching TV and couldn't help but sigh. Everyone in her family seemed to be workaholics. Eliza had only stepped down from the company in recent years due to health issues.
But thinking about the sense of accomplishment she got from work, Constance figured her brothers and parents probably felt the same way.
While she was lost in thought, Constance's phone suddenly buzzed.
Seeing a Facebook friend request, she opened it to find the profile picture was just a black image. She didn't accept it but replied asking who it was.
Soon, she saw the name Felix, and Constance couldn't help but frown. Why was this guy so persistent?
She thought her attitude today had been clear enough. She didn't want to be a substitute, and Felix wasn't her type. His cold demeanor made her lose her appetite.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she directly declined the request. Seeing that he didn't try to apply again, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
But then, she remembered Jennifer mentioning that the Drake Group and the Clinton Group had ended their partnership. From what she knew, the Drake Group had a lot of projects with the Clinton Group. If they all got canceled, the Drake Group would take a big hit.
She had a gut feeling this had something to do with her.
It wasn't until past eleven at night that Timothy and Eliza came back. Seeing Constance sitting on the couch with a pillow, watching TV, they were both surprised.
Eliza walked up and asked, "Constance, why are you still up?"
Constance replied, "Dad, Mom, I was waiting for you."
"Waiting for us?"
"Yeah." Constance looked at Timothy and pursed her lips. "Dad, I heard the Drake Group and the Clinton Group ended all their cooperation. Does this have something to do with me?"
Timothy looked surprised and quickly said, "Constance, you're overthinking it. It's just a difference in philosophy, so the Drake Group and the Clinton Group decided not to continue their cooperation."
Constance sighed, "Dad, do you know that whenever you lie, you unconsciously put your hands behind your back?"
"Really?" Timothy quickly put his hands down and nervously touched his nose.
Eliza, standing beside him, gave him an angry look, thinking he was useless.
Eliza said, "Constance, don't worry about these things. Your dad has his reasons for what he does. Don't overthink it."
Constance frowned. "Mom, if it's because Felix mistook me for his late wife, I don't think it's necessary to end the cooperation with the Clinton Group and harm the company's interests. I made it clear to him today that I won't..."
Before she could finish, Timothy suddenly raised his voice, "Did he come to see you again today?"
Seeing Timothy's agitated expression, Constance had no doubt that if she said yes, he would immediately go find trouble with Felix.
Constance replied, "No, he came to our company with Mr. Collins to discuss cooperation and happened to run into me."
Timothy snorted coldly, "Stay away from him in the future!"
Constance nodded. "I know. He's not my type. I have no interest in being a substitute for someone who's passed away. But ending the cooperation with the Clinton Group over this isn't worth it."
After all, she knew very well that the living could never compete with the dead. She was unwilling to and wouldn't allow herself to live in another woman's shadow for the rest of her life.
Timothy and Eliza exchanged a glance and then looked away.
Eliza said, "Alright, your dad knows what he's doing with business. We've been at a banquet all night and are tired. You should go rest; don't you have work tomorrow?"
"Okay, Dad, Mom, you should go to bed early too."
After Constance went to her room, Eliza looked at Timothy with a heavy expression. "Timothy, I don't think we can keep this a secret for much longer. Maybe we should talk to Felix and see what it would take for him to stop bothering Constance."
Timothy said, "He's unpredictable. I doubt he'll agree easily. Let's wait and see. If he dares to approach Constance again, I won't let him off!"
Thinking about the hardships Constance had endured in Dawnridge, Timothy wanted to punch Felix and would never let him be with Constance.
Eliza sighed, "That's all we can do for now."
The next morning, as soon as Constance arrived at the office, Jennifer walked up to her with a bouquet of roses, smiling. "Constance, these are roses from Eric. I was wrong yesterday, and I hope you can forgive me!"
Constance looked at her indifferently. Jennifer's sudden change in attitude must be because she found out from Eric that Constance was from the Drake family.
Constance smiled. "Thank Eric for his kind gesture, but I'm allergic to pollen, so I can't accept the flowers."
