Chapter 374
The speaker froze up, and when she spun around, there was Jennifer, staring her down with icy eyes. "Jennifer, I'm sorry," she mumbled.
Jennifer just sneered and raised an eyebrow. "Pack your stuff and get out. If anyone else wants to talk behind my back, you can leave with her now!"
The designer, still stunned for a second, then clenched her teeth. "Jennifer, you're just a designer. What gives you the right to fire me? You think you're in HR? I'm not leaving!"
Jennifer stopped, her cold gaze locking onto the designer's face like she was sizing her up.
Feeling the heat, the designer looked away, scared.
Jennifer sneered and said slowly, "If I remember right, you've got an elderly mom and a brother still in high school. If you don't want anything to happen to them, you'd better leave quietly."
The designer's body shook violently, then she collapsed into her chair, trembling all over. She finally got why her colleagues quit so fast after crossing Jennifer. They'd been threatened. Jennifer was a devil!
Seeing her pale face, Jennifer turned indifferently and headed to the restroom, saying, "I don't want to see you here tomorrow."
It was several minutes after Jennifer left before the designer finally broke down and started crying at her desk.
Everyone around looked at her with sympathy but didn't dare to comfort her, scared Jennifer would make them leave too.
Constance had just arrived at the company when HR brought over a girl in her twenties. "Constance, this is Holly Campbell, a recent grad from the School of Design. She'll be your assistant from now on."
Constance glanced at Holly, who had a beautiful face and a stylish look, like a vibrant rose in full bloom. She nodded. "Alright, thanks, Anna."
Anna Reed waved her hand. "No problem. I'll leave her to you. I've got to get back to work."
"Okay." After Anna left, Constance turned to Holly and said calmly, "Take a seat. Did you bring your previous work?"
Holly had thought her boss would be a woman in her forties or fifties, but seeing someone so young, about her age, she couldn't help but wonder if Constance's designs were better than hers.
"I did," she replied.
Constance took the designs Holly handed over, flipped through a few pages, and nodded. "Your designs are not bad, but there's still room for improvement. By the way, I'm Constance Drake. You can just call me Constance."
Holly was silent for a few seconds but couldn't help saying, "Constance, I've won a national design competition gold medal and made it to the top fifty in a world competition. So I hope my boss is better than me, at least more experienced."
Constance raised an eyebrow. Holly was questioning her skills?
She smiled and said slowly, "You'll know my level after working for a while. Your desk is outside my office. Go familiarize yourself with the work."
Seeing her calm demeanor, Holly frowned but still got up and left.
After the door closed, Constance continued to look at the documents.
At ten in the morning, Grant called a meeting for the design department.
Grant said, "Last quarter's designs didn't get great feedback. My assistant's put together the best and worst-selling styles. Take a look, and we'll talk about next quarter's designs in ten minutes."
Holly sat behind Constance and watched her casually flip through a few pages before setting them down, frowning. Was Constance always this laid-back about her work?
Ten minutes flew by, and Grant said, "You all should know the best-selling designs last quarter didn't change much, but the colors were more saturated."
He paused and continued, "I've done some market research. People are calling these bright clothes 'dopamine dressing.' We should design in this direction for next quarter. Thoughts?"
Constance frowned and said to Holly, "Go get Grant a cup of warm water."
Holly didn't want to but still got up and brought a cup of warm water. "Grant, have some warm water."
Grant looked up, his voice a bit hoarse. "Thanks."
Getting close to Grant, Holly was amazed. He looked even better up close and had a mature, gentle vibe, totally different from the boys at school.
While she was in a daze, she suddenly felt a cold stare on her. She instinctively turned around and saw the female designer sitting opposite Constance glaring at her, eyes full of malice.
Holly felt a chill and pursed her lips before returning to her seat.
But the female designer didn't let it go, sneering, "Constance, your assistant is really considerate, getting Grant water when he coughs. Is she afraid Grant won't sign her full-time application?"
After last night's incident, Constance and Jennifer were completely at odds. Naturally, Constance wouldn't tolerate her words.
Constance shot back, "I told her to get Grant water. Got a problem with that?"
Jennifer didn't expect that and immediately said coldly, "Of course not. But trying to please Grant won't help. Focus on your designs instead!"
Constance smiled calmly. "So, Jennifer, you think asking my assistant to get water for an unwell colleague means I'm not focused on design? By that logic, you might as well stop eating. After all, eating is a waste of time too."
"You!" Jennifer glared at Constance, about to curse her.
Grant cut in coldly, "Enough. This meeting is to discuss next quarter's design direction, not for you to argue."
Jennifer mocked, "Grant, you're quite the gentleman."
Grant pretended not to hear her and said coldly, "Let's continue the meeting."
For the rest of the meeting, Jennifer kept mocking whatever Grant said, and everyone could see she was now opposing Grant. But thinking of the colleague Jennifer forced out this morning, no one dared to speak up.
The meeting ended two hours later, and the design direction for the next quarter was split into three. Constance and Jennifer each took one direction, and another designer, Harper Brooks, who'd been with the company for five or six years, took the third.
After Grant left, Jennifer looked at Constance coldly and said, "This time, I won't lose to you. It's either you or me in this company!"
