Chapter 101 The Sins Weigh Too Heavily
Margaret squinted at the pic of Raymond's folks on the tombstone.
Gilbert had this kinda chubby face, looked like a decent dude. Sandra, though, had this stern look, hardly ever smiled, but she was pretty.
"Remember me? I'm Margaret, Raymond's wife. We met like a week ago."
Big ol' snowflakes were falling on her hair, lashes, and cheeks, feeling like tiny knives.
"I'm sorry, really sorry. I'm apologizing for my dad and the whole Hughes clan. I'm so sorry."
Margaret laid down some flowers.
"To me, my dad was a saint, the nicest guy ever. Never thought he'd do a hit-and-run and then try to off you."
"I'm sorry. I know my dad's done some messed-up stuff. Percy's locked up, my dad's in a coma from the crash, and I just found out I got late-stage liver cancer. I don't even know if I'll make it through the month."
"Last night, it hit me how deep my sins run. I used to think Raymond did me and the Hughes family dirty, but now I get it. I don't blame him anymore."
"He has every right to hate me and wish I was dead. Only death can make up for my sins."
"Please, bless me so I can scrape together enough cash for my dad's medical bills before I kick the bucket. Then I'll apologize to you on his behalf."
She gave a bitter smile. "I know you probably don't wanna see me, but I feel so guilty. I owe you, the Hughes family owes you, so I came."
"Raymond probably regrets marrying me, but I don't. Even now, with him hating my guts, I still like him."
But he saw her love as the most disgusting thing ever. Margaret stood up, looked at the tombstone, and gave a sad smile.
What she couldn't get before, she totally got now.
When Raymond first got with her, he was super resistant to her touch.
He didn't even wanna hold hands or hug her in public.
She always thought it was his pride. Now she knew—it was pure hate.
From the first moment he saw her, he wanted to strangle her.
Before Marlon's accident, she was really happy. Looking back, those days still seemed beautiful to her, even though it must've been tough for him, going from hating her touch to making love, kissing, and eating her cooking.
After leaving the cemetery, Margaret didn't head straight to the airport.
Instead, she went to Eldoria, where Ashley died.
Eldoria was still covered in snow, just like the day of the accident.
The only difference was that the broken bridge railing had been fixed up, with a new warning sign: [Dangerous area, no hanging around.]
The scene of Ashley driving towards her flashed before her eyes again.
Even now, she still felt like Ashley had aimed to hit her but bailed at the last second and crashed into the bridge railing instead.
"Ashley, were you trying to kill me back then? But why didn't you go through with it?"
"Without realizing it, you've been in heaven for a week now. No bad guys up there, right? No worries, right? Are you happy over there?"
"If nothing crazy happens, I'll be joining you soon."
"What exactly is the gift you left for me? I'm really worried I won't make it to the moment I can get it myself."
Margaret stood in the snow, looking at the gloomy sky filled with falling snowflakes, muttering to herself.
The weather was freezing, and Margaret sneezed. She stood there for over ten minutes before leaving Eldoria.
Next, she bought five hundred sets of winter clothes, a hundred cases of soda, and five hundred cases of instant noodles before she hit up Hope Haven Orphanage.
She donated everything to Hope Haven Orphanage.
Of course, there was also a check for fifty grand.
The female director, Lisa, recognized her because she had been there before. Seeing so many supplies, Lisa was over the moon and grateful, saying, "Miss, you're such a good person to donate so much to us. You have no idea, we got ten more kids this year, and it's unusually cold. We've been worried about this."
"No need to thank me, it's just a small gesture." Margaret smiled bitterly, stuffing the fifty grand check into Lisa's hand. "You can't judge a book by its cover. Some people may seem like great philanthropists but are actually full of sins. I'm also atoning for my sins."
"Miss, you shouldn't say that. Who hasn't made mistakes? It's not about atonement. In my mind, you're a good person."
Lisa frowned, correcting her, and then seemed to remember something, asking, "By the way, did you find the little boy you were looking for last time?"
"No." Margaret shook her head.
"It's okay, you'll definitely meet again." Lisa comforted her.
Margaret walked out of the orphanage, stepping on the thick snow.
She thought, 'Little mute boy, are you still alive? If you are, how are you doing now? Have you married and had kids? Are you living a happy life? If possible, I really want to see you one last time before I die. Can you hear me calling you?'
Suddenly, her phone rang.
Margaret took out her phone and answered the call.
She didn't look at the caller ID.
"Do you think that by visiting my parents and doing some charity work, you can atone for the sins of the Hughes family? Margaret, you and Marlon are just as hypocritical and disgusting, you sick me." Raymond's voice on the phone was sharp and cutting, every word dripping with bitterness.
