Chapter 198 Hugging So Tight, It Feels Like Suffocation

Nancy clung to Margaret so tightly, it was like she was trying to squeeze the life out of her. Margaret hugged her back, feeling the intensity of Nancy's emotions. All she could hear were Nancy's sobs, and she knew those were tears of joy because she had finally woken up.

Margaret glanced up and noticed the silver strands in Nancy's hair. She remembered how Nancy's hair used to be so well-kept before she got married. Back then, Marlon was always looking sharp too. But after Margaret married Raymond, everything went downhill for the Hughes family in just over a year. First, Marlon fell down the stairs and ended up with dementia. Then he had that car accident, and they never found the person responsible.

Nancy had to shoulder all the burdens alone. She aged ten years overnight, her hair turning gray. Her peaceful life was completely shattered because of Margaret.

Margaret felt like there was a knife in her throat, making it hard to breathe. She clutched Nancy's coat, her voice thick with guilt. "Mom, I'm so sorry." She knew she was the reason Nancy had suffered so much.

Margaret had been spoiled by her parents for twenty-three years and had never really done anything for the family. Nancy's dream of growing old with Marlon was destroyed because of her.

"Margaret, don't apologize. Remember, we're family. Family means facing tough times together," Nancy said, still crying.

After a while, Nancy helped Margaret wipe away her tears and pressed the call button on the wall.

Just then, the operating room door swung open. A cold breeze swept in. Margaret's breathing quickened. She squinted for a moment, and when she opened her eyes, she saw Raymond, dressed in a dark suit, striding in with a furrowed brow.

Behind him were a bunch of medical staff, Alvin, and Hubert. Raymond looked surprised and excited to see Margaret awake.

Hubert, standing behind Raymond, was stunned and blurted out, "Mrs. Howard, you're awake?"

Hubert thought to himself, 'Margaret had been sedated and should have been out cold. How did she wake up?'

Margaret didn't respond and turned her head away. Nancy, still holding Margaret on the operating table, glared at Hubert and sneered, "Are you disappointed that Margaret woke up? Were you waiting to send her to the crematorium? Aren't you afraid of going to hell for doing such evil things?"

Nancy was really scolding Raymond. But Hubert felt guilty and quickly defended himself, "Mrs. Hughes, at that time, Mrs. Howard really had no breath. It's a miracle she woke up. We're, of course, happy for her."

"Deep down, you know if you're happy or not," Nancy said coldly.

Hubert wanted to say more, but Raymond shot him a look, and he shut up. Raymond then had Hubert check on Margaret. After confirming she was out of danger, he had the medical staff move her to a VIP ward.

The ward was top-notch, and Margaret was the only patient there. The medical staff pricked her hand with a needle and hooked her up to an IV.

A bunch of machines were set up around the bed, connected to various parts of her body. Margaret, like a lifeless doll, let them do their work without a sound. She didn't even glance at Raymond.

Once the medical staff were done, Raymond waved his hand, and they left the ward. Raymond was about to ask Nancy to leave so he could talk to Margaret. He had big news— they were going to have a baby again!

But before he could say anything, Margaret grabbed Nancy's wrist and said, "I want to be alone with my mother for a while." She didn't look at him, but it was clear she was talking to Raymond.

Raymond's hand clenched at his side. Her tone was icy and unfriendly. She was the one who had messed up, lost their baby, and stupidly knelt in the snow. In the end, he was the one who saved her life. If Raymond hadn't rushed her to the hospital, she would have died.

Raymond thought, 'Is this how she treats her savior, by ignoring me?' His pride was hurt, and anger bubbled up inside him, but then he looked at her loose hospital gown, her frail body, and her pale face. His clenched fist slowly relaxed.

Raymond thought, 'Margaret has already been punished. She knelt in the snow for so long and almost died. And now, she's pregnant again. There is no need to be angry with her.'

"I'll come back to see you later," he said flatly and turned to leave. Alvin glanced uneasily at Margaret and then followed Raymond out of the ward.

Alvin gently closed the door behind them. "Mr. Howard, why didn't you explain just now? You saved Mrs. Howard. If you hadn't brought Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Howard would have been sent to the crematorium by now," Alvin said, trying to defend him.

Everyone thought Raymond was heartless. As Raymond's assistant, Alvin saw clearly that Raymond cared for Margaret more than anyone else, but he was suppressing his feelings because of his anger. But suppressing didn't mean he didn't care!

If Raymond hadn't told him to keep it a secret, Alvin would have told Margaret everything right away. Raymond glanced at him and didn't answer. He didn't want Margaret to know.

Margaret was Marlon's daughter; it wasn't right for him to be too good to her, at least not openly. She was someone who would take advantage if treated too well. Now, with her being both afraid and resentful of him, it was just right.

"Notify the hospital where Marlon is and resume all of Marlon's treatments," Raymond ordered.

Alvin nodded and turned to make the call.

Raymond, thinking of how Margaret had coughed up blood several times in front of him, went to the director's office to get answers from Hubert.

Hubert was about to call Sarah to tell her that Margaret was alive when he saw Raymond coming. He quickly hung up and smiled. "Mr. Howard, you're here."

"Is there really nothing wrong with Margaret's body?" Raymond asked, his sharp gaze fixed on Hubert's slightly chubby face.

Hubert's eyelid twitched, and his heart skipped a beat. He didn't know why Raymond was asking. Hubert thought, 'Has Raymond discovered something? If he finds out that everything was orchestrated by me and Sarah, the consequences would be unimaginable.'

Seeing Hubert hesitate, Raymond's tone became more forceful. "I want the truth. Does she have a terminal illness or not?"
