Chapter 385 He Has No Right to Feel Sorry for Her
"Margaret, it's me." The deep voice cut through the biting cold wind.
Margaret heard the voice and slowly opened her eyes. When her vision cleared, she saw the man who had pulled her into his arms. He wore a black baseball cap, a green coat, and jeans, giving off a casual, sporty vibe.
It was Daniel, not him.
The light that had just appeared in Margaret's eyes, like stars in the night sky, quickly faded. Of course, Raymond was in the ICU in such a critical condition; how could he possibly be here?
It was impossible.
While Margaret was lost in thought, Daniel draped his green coat over her shoulders.
Daniel looked at her with a flash of pity in his eyes, but considering their relationship, he knew he had no right to feel that way. He lowered his gaze, hiding the disappointment in his eyes.
Margaret didn't want to wear his coat. She knew Raymond would be jealous if he found out. Alvin had told her that before she lost her memory, she and Daniel were too close, causing her and Raymond to fight and almost divorce.
She couldn't afford to be careless anymore.
"No, thanks." Margaret firmly pulled the green coat off her shoulders, trying to return it to him.
Daniel looked up, holding the coat halfway off her shoulders, and patiently reasoned with her. "Margaret, the weather forecast says the blizzard will last all day. We don't need to get caught up in these trivial matters. Otherwise, we'll both be stuck on Everpeak Mountain."
Margaret's lips moved slightly. He did have a point.
The green coat was draped back over her shoulders. "I told you, we're friends. You may have forgotten since you lost your memory, but when I first met you, I was a police officer. My help to you isn't unique; I wouldn't stand by and do nothing for any other citizen either."
Daniel's words made Margaret blush. Had she misunderstood and thought he liked her?
"So you don't need to worry so much. The roads are slippery in the snow. I'll carry you down the mountain. Margaret, forgive me." Daniel apologized and then lifted Margaret in his arms, carrying her down the mountain with determination.
Daniel was truly a gentleman. As he carried her down the mountain, his hands only gripped her shoulders and the bend of her knees.
He avoided touching her chest and waist perfectly.
To prevent her from overthinking, Daniel didn't look at her once, as if they were really just friends.
Daniel walked to a black SUV, holding her tightly with one hand while opening the passenger door with the other. He then bent down and placed her in the passenger seat.
Margaret felt quite cold. She hadn't noticed it in the blizzard, but now she did. Her body trembled uncontrollably. Daniel sat in the driver's seat, reached out, and turned on the heater.
Then he placed his hand on the steering wheel, started the car, and drove steadily through the snow.
Out of the corner of his eye, Daniel noticed the wound on her forehead and the cut on her wrist. When Margaret saw him looking at her wrist, she instinctively covered it with his green coat.
Daniel looked away, focusing on the road ahead. "Does it hurt?"
Though it was a question, his tone was certain.
Of course, it hurt, but Margaret pretended to be strong. "No, it doesn't."
"Still lying. I remember you were always afraid of pain."
"Did we know each other that long ago?" Margaret was quite surprised.
Daniel didn't respond, just let out a cold laugh. "Is Raymond really worth all this? Kneeling to pray, bleeding while copying scriptures? You just had surgery. Can your body handle this?"
"Daniel, I know you think I'm being foolish." Margaret looked down at the green coat on her lap and murmured, "I used to think people were stupid for doing such things. But now I get it. This is love. Daniel, you don't understand."
Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel. He didn't understand?
"One day, you'll meet a girl you like, and you'll give a lot without expecting anything in return. Then you'll understand how I feel. But I hope you don't go through that. You're a good person, and I hope you and the girl you like can be happy together without any hardships." Margaret bit her lip. This was her sincere wish. She genuinely hoped her friends could live well.
Daniel's eyes narrowed. Was this her way of rejecting him?
A sharp pain pierced his heart.
"Daniel, I heard from Alvin that before I lost my memory, I was too close to you, and even wanted to divorce Raymond because of you." Margaret suddenly brought it up.
Daniel was stunned. "What?"
Their divorce had something to do with him? Before she lost her memory, she didn't even remember who he was. How could she want to divorce Raymond because of him? He remembered it was because Raymond disrespected Margaret, and she couldn't take it anymore, so she filed for divorce.
"Daniel, I lost my memory, so I don't remember many things. But I still want to tell you, I love Raymond."
"I know." Daniel's grip on the steering wheel tightened. His voice remained calm.
How could he not know? He had always known. He was a witness to Margaret and Raymond's love. They went to the same college, but she never knew he existed. He knew exactly how she pursued Raymond.
No one understood Margaret's obsession with Raymond better than he did.
"You really know?"
"Even if Raymond dies, even if he wants to give you ten percent of The Hughes Group's shares, even if he wants to set us up and have you take care of me, I won't be with you. I'm sorry if I'm blunt, but I have to consider Raymond's feelings."
These words were like needles, stabbing into Daniel's heart and bones, causing indescribable pain.
He smiled and looked at Margaret. "Do you think I'm hopelessly in love with you?"
"I..."
"We're just friends. That's all. You don't need to overthink. I never intended to come between you and Mr. Howard."
Margaret felt relieved hearing this.
Daniel saw it and felt the pain in his heart. He was good at hiding his feelings for her, pretending not to like her even though he did. He comforted her, "Mr. Howard will wake up. I'll keep trying to help David."
"Thank you, Daniel."
"Thank me by not doing anything foolish. I want you to be safe."
As soon as the car stopped at the hospital entrance, Margaret, burning with fever, fainted. Daniel carried her straight to the hospital. Even through the coat, he could feel her burning body. Her cheeks were flushed from the high temperature. This fool was willing to risk her life for Raymond.
For a moment, Daniel didn't know whether to envy or pity Raymond. He had known Margaret first, but because of his insecurity and the label of being an illegitimate child, he didn't dare to approach her. He watched as the girl he liked was taken by another man. He despised himself for being such a coward.
