Chapter 38 Have You Ever Cared About Her
Margaret said, "Yeah, I do. Hang on a sec."
She shrugged off her backpack, unzipped it, and fished out some old receipts from her wallet, handing them over to Lisa. "This is just a part of it, donated by a friend of mine."
Lisa took the receipts, punched the numbers into the computer, and her frown got even deeper. She picked up the receipts and gave them a closer look, quickly spotting something fishy. "Ms. Hughes, looks like your friend played you."
Lisa went on, "We can't find any record of these receipt numbers, and this seal? Totally not ours. It's a fake."
To prove it, Lisa showed Margaret the legit Hope Haven Orphanage seal.
Margaret quickly saw the issue. The seal on her receipts said "Ironwood LaneHope Haven Orphanage,“ but the one Lisa showed her was "Ironwood Lane Hope Haven Orphanage."
The receipts were bogus!
Margaret bit her lip. "Can you check on someone named Sarah for me? See what she donated."
Lisa's fingers flew over the keyboard.
"Sarah came to our orphanage over ten years ago, but she only donated like a hundred bucks' worth of cookies. She hasn't been back since," Lisa said.
Margaret took a step back, her fingers gripping the edge of the desk.
Sarah was her best friend, someone she always trusted.
She had once saved a boy on Ironwood Lane who was getting beaten up. He said he was an orphan and it didn't matter if he got beaten to death.
She didn't know his name, just had a photo of his back.
Later, Sarah saw the photo and offered to help find the boy. Not long after, Sarah told her the boy was at Hope Haven Orphanage.
Margaret had transferred a million dollars to Sarah, asking her to donate it to the orphanage in her name to support the boy.
She always trusted Sarah, so over the years, and she sent Sarah three million dollars in total.
Sarah had played her!
Margaret pulled out the photo of the boy's back from her phone and showed it to Lisa. "Do you recognize this boy?"
Lisa looked for a moment before saying, "We don't have this boy in our orphanage."
Margaret pressed her lips together. "Could you be mistaken? Please look carefully."
Lisa looked again and then said confidently, "Even though I'm old, I have a good memory. I remember everyone who's stayed at our orphanage."
Lisa added, "You've most likely been played by your friend. Your money went into her pocket, and she gave you fake receipts to fool you. Stay away from people like her; she'll get what's coming to her."
Margaret's long, curled eyelashes fluttered. Not only were the receipts fake, but the boy's info too.
Sarah had stooped so low, deceiving her for money, betraying her trust, and even seducing Raymond.
The childhood friend she grew up with, Sarah, was so disgusting behind her back.
She felt so foolish, treated like an idiot by Sarah for so many years.
Where was that boy now? How was he doing? Was he married with kids, living happily?
Or had he been bullied to death?
Margaret suddenly felt a deep sense of guilt as she walked out of the orphanage, her heart heavy with the thought that her negligence might have caused the boy's death.
She grabbed a quick bite.
Holding her phone, she stared at the lit screen. She had been missing for two days, and she wondered if Raymond had sent her any messages. Did he care about her?
