Chapter 593 The Breakup Is Up to Me

"Lyric—" Remy started to say something but hesitated. She felt that since Lyric had come back, she had become more mature and less rebellious.

Lyric set down her glass of milk and took Remy's hand.

Love was just like that. She had tried, she had been brave, but the ending wasn't what she had hoped for. She didn't regret using a fake identity to get close to Daniel.

But she also didn't regret leaving him decisively.

Maybe it was all fate. No matter how hard you tried, some things just weren't meant to be. Her parents had an arranged marriage without any initial feelings, but they were both good people, so they made it work and developed feelings over time.

Since she had decided to let go of Daniel, it was time to find someone nice and start anew.

Lyric thought for a moment and then said, "I'll give the guy who saved you a chance. If he's decent and I don't dislike him right off the bat, I'll give it a shot. I've thought about it. Marriage needs someone with good character and responsibility, someone who will protect me like Dad protects Mom, even in tough times."

"Lyric, you've finally grown up. The ones you picked yourself, I never saw them, but I always felt they weren't reliable. We're experienced, and our judgment is never wrong," Remy said with relief.

After Remy left, the smile on Lyric's face gradually faded.

She picked up her phone, having already changed her number.

That day, during a call with Mireille, she had heard Daniel's voice in the background.

That night, she had hesitated for a long time, torn between her feelings. She still had a hard time letting go of him.

But she couldn't forgive being treated as a substitute, losing her child, and not being able to become a mother.

She had everything—looks, background—yet Daniel had fooled her completely.

So she never made that call.

But tomorrow, she was meeting the man from the arranged date.

What about Daniel? How was he doing? Had he given up looking for her, or was he also going on dates as Cade arranged?

Her fingers tightened around the phone, and she found herself entering that familiar number.

She longed to call, to hear his voice one last time and see if he was doing well.

Her fingers trembled as she pressed the call button.

But she quickly snapped out of it. Lyric, what were you doing?

Were you crazy? You'd decided to move on and meet someone new. Why did you get tangled up in the past?

It wouldn't be fair to the man she was meeting tomorrow.

She had promised Remy to take it seriously.

Before the call connected, she hung up.

She exited the dialer.

Just then, a video call from Mireille came in.

She answered.

On the screen, Mireille's face was covered in a face mask. "Lyric, are you going on a date tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

"Send me a picture of him, will you?"

"Why do you want a picture?"

"I'm curious about the guy your parents picked. I want to see if he's better looking than Daniel. I'll post it online and let Daniel see it, just to piss him off."

"No need. Don't be so childish," Lyric refused. "The past is the past. The best revenge is living well now. Ignoring him is the biggest revenge. Wasting time and energy on him just makes me look bad."

"True. But ever since he tried to tempt me with that contract, he hasn't contacted me. Isn't that weird?" Mireille adjusted her face mask. "I heard Cade is also setting him up on dates. He's probably busy."

So he was busy dating.

He had sounded so sincere on the phone, but in the end...

She thought, if a man really wanted to find a woman, he would find a way. Unless he didn't care enough.

Lyric didn't want to hear more. "Stop mentioning him in front of me. It's pointless."

"You're right. He's just a jerk. Besides his looks, his background and status don't match yours. Breaking up was for the best," Mireille comforted. "Listen to your parents. Don't settle for someone like Daniel. Look at the news every day—so many men climb up by stepping on women, then abandon them, even kill them. We should be glad we dodged a bullet."

Lyric froze. "It's late. Don't scare me. If you can't chat, just don't."

Silverbrook, The Taylor Group.

The moon was out, but the stars were sparse.

Nia had just finished working late. After reporting to Walter, she returned to her desk, shut down her computer, took off her work badge, grabbed her purse, and left.

Walter glanced at her retreating figure, then continued with his work. When he finished, he got up, grabbed his suit jacket, and left the office.

The summer night was far from cool, carrying a stifling heat.

Nia's stomach was growling. She planned to grab a bite at a nearby restaurant.

Just as she stepped out of The Taylor Group building, a man in a leather jacket emerged from the shadows, blocking her path.

Nia's expression changed, and she turned to leave.

But the man grabbed her wrist and pinned her against the building's glass wall, which was hot from the day's sun.

She glared at him, trying to shake him off. "Let go of me! We're over. Stop bothering me!"

"Did I agree to the breakup? You think you can just decide when we start and end? Do you think I'm that easy to push around?" The man sneered, tightening his grip.

Nia winced in pain. "You know why we broke up. Three months ago, I came back from a business trip and found you with another woman in my apartment. Do I need to spell it out? You said she was a client. Were you 'negotiating' in bed?"

"Is that my fault? Do you know how hard it is to make money these days? I had to use some tricks to get her to pay me. How else was I supposed to support you? It was just a fling, it's over. Why bring it up?" The man was getting impatient. "And what about you? We've been together for two years, and all I got was holding hands. Do you know how embarrassing that is? I'm a man, I have needs. You won't sleep with me, but I can't find someone else? Is that fair?"

Nia was speechless. "I told you, we could do that after marriage. Two years, and you never proposed."

"Marriage costs money. Your parents are too greedy," the man scoffed.

Nia tried to pry his fingers off, but he held tight. "The breakup is my call. We haven't slept together, so I won't let you go. If you want to break up, you have to sleep with me tonight."
