Chapter 199 What Happened with Margaret Coughing up Blood?
Hubert thought, "Of course, Margaret's running out of time. She probably won't even make it to the New Year!" There were only ten days left until the New Year.
Hubert swallowed hard. Even if Margaret didn't die now, she'd be gone in ten days because of the baby.
Pressing his lips together, Hubert said respectfully, "Mr. Howard, I don't know why you think Mrs. Howard has a terminal illness, but my examination results show she's healthy."
Raymond's eyes were complicated, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Mr. Howard, did you hear something?" Hubert asked.
Raymond looked up, squinting his eyes, and continued, "Then why did she vomit blood?"
"Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard's family has been through a lot, and she's been depressed. Plus, she recently had a miscarriage, so her body is very weak. She caught a bad cold, and her body couldn't handle it, which is why she vomited blood. It's not because of a terminal illness," Hubert explained calmly.
Raymond believed Hubert. The Hughes Family had been in constant trouble, and Margaret was most worried about Marlon. She even got vitamin pills and pretended they were painkillers for a terminal illness. Margaret never told the truth, so he had no reason to be suspicious.
"Mr. Howard, if you don't believe me, you can have her checked at several other hospitals," Hubert suggested deliberately.
Hubert was gambling. If Raymond changed hospitals, he would be completely exposed. He was betting on Raymond's trust in him.
For a long time, Raymond didn't say anything. Instead, he looked at Hubert through thick glasses, expressionless.
Hubert's palms were sweating, and he felt guilty inside. "Mr. Howard, do you want to take Mrs. Howard to another hospital for a check-up? I've been with you for three years, and you have been kind to me. I could never do anything to betray you. If I were hiding Mrs. Howard's condition, I would come to a bad end."
Raymond remembered that when he met Hubert, he wasn't even a director yet. Hubert was being ostracized and couldn't find a job to support his family. Hubert's wife was even threatening to divorce him. It was the lowest point in his life.
Raymond had given him a hand and brought him into the hospital. Hubert's abilities quickly became apparent, and Raymond believed Hubert was loyal to him and wouldn't dare to deceive him.
Between Margaret and Hubert, it was clear that Hubert was more trustworthy. Because Hubert always said he would repay Raymond's kindness, and over the years, he had done very well.
Thinking of this, Raymond's cold gaze softened. He patted Hubert on the shoulder and said indifferently, "Forget about it. Just focus on protecting the baby in Margaret's womb."
Raymond considered that Hubert was his man. Changing hospitals might lead to Margaret bribing other doctors to deceive him together.
Moreover, transferring hospitals was a troublesome matter. With Margaret now pregnant, he feared any accidents from moving around.
Hubert watched Raymond leave and breathed a sigh of relief, nervously swallowing.
Hubert's phone was buzzing in his pocket. He took it out and saw it was a call from Sarah. There were also several missed calls, all from Sarah.
Hubert answered the phone. Sarah complained on the other end about him answering late. Perhaps she was immersed in the fantasy that Margaret was already dead. Sarah cheerfully told him she had bought several sets of the sexy outfits he liked and would be waiting for him at his place tonight.
Hubert felt conflicted, but seeing Sarah willing to go to such lengths for him, his tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed. "Let's talk tonight." Afraid Sarah would ask too many questions, he hurriedly hung up the phone.
Raymond walked to Margaret's hospital room. He heard Nancy's voice. "Margaret, are you not wanting to be with Raymond anymore? If that's the case, you can get a divorce. Don't stress about it."
Raymond's fingers on the doorknob suddenly froze. No wonder Margaret had been talking about divorce before. It turned out Nancy was supporting her from behind!
Raymond was very annoyed. Why was there no one supporting him and Margaret to stay together?
Raymond didn't believe Nancy didn't know Margaret was carrying his child. At that moment, he wanted to push the door open and kick Nancy out. But he held back; he didn't want to make Margaret angry.
Raymond turned and left the hospital corridor to buy Margaret's favorite fruits. Some things were better left unheard. He wasn't magnanimous enough to pretend he didn't hear if he did. Whether it was self-deception or heartlessness, it didn't matter anymore.
Even if it meant keeping Margaret by his side for life, he was willing. If pushed to the brink, he would really do it, but he hoped that day would never come.
In the hospital room.
Margaret's expression was a bit unnatural after hearing Nancy's words. She and Raymond had submitted their divorce papers half a month ago.
Raymond had agreed that once the divorce papers were finalized, she would disappear from his world forever.
Margaret sighed. She didn't know if she could hold on until the divorce papers were finalized. She thought she probably couldn't. She didn't even dare to think about how weak her body was.
Margaret had been hiding the divorce from Nancy because she knew Nancy too well. Nancy wouldn't agree. The Hughes Family needed Raymond, and Marlon needed Raymond's help. Margaret didn't say anything.
"You've wanted to divorce him for a long time, haven't you? Don't hide it from me; I can tell. When something happened to you, you didn't want to go to him, which shows you two can't go on anymore." Nancy pulled a chair and sat by her bed.
Margaret didn't want her to worry, so she lied, "That's not true."
"Margaret, tell me, how did you end up like this? How did you almost die and get sent to the crematorium?"
"Mom, it's all in the past," Margaret murmured. She opened her mouth but found she could only say this.
Margaret couldn't say anything else because she knew that saying more would only add to Nancy's worries.
Nancy cried, wiping her tears, saying, "I just feel sorry for you, being so unappreciated by Raymond. Margaret, why don't you divorce Raymond? We don't need to live this miserable life anymore."
Hearing this, Margaret's nose tingled, and tears streamed down her face. Nancy had always advised her to maintain the marriage with Raymond until Marlon woke up. Why had Nancy suddenly changed her mind?
"What about Dad? He needs money," Margaret murmured.
Nancy wiped her tears, her eyes red. "There will always be a way. Margaret, I used to ignore how you felt and just wanted to get your dad treated. But now I realize that was too selfish, too wrong. If your dad wakes up and sees you dead, how heartbroken would he be?''
She continued, ''You know how much your dad loves you. Supporting the Hughes Family isn't your responsibility alone, Margaret. Let me help you, share the burden with you. Divorce him, listen to me."
