Chapter 111 Stop Fooling Around, Come Home with Me
Margaret heard that and felt totally out of it.
Did they even share a home?
Before Marlon's accident, things were great between them. Whenever he ticked her off, he'd hold her close and say, "Margaret, don't make a fuss, come home with me."
Thinking about how things used to be and how they were falling apart now made Margaret really sad.
She was exhausted today and didn't want to do anything. Leaning against Raymond's strong chest, she felt safe.
When they got downstairs, he put her down with a look of disgust. "Why are you so gross now? Wearing these dirty clothes, change back into your own!"
The warmth from earlier disappeared in a flash.
She wanted to snap back, "Weren't you the one who told me to wear them?"
But she hadn't eaten all day and was too hungry to argue. She obediently went to the storage room to change into her own clothes.
She wanted to sit in the back seat, but he insisted she sit in the front, reminding her they weren't divorced yet.
She didn't want to argue; she knew he was just trying to mess with her.
Raymond floored it, and the car sped up.
Hearing Margaret's stomach growl, he turned the wheel and pulled up in front of a restaurant.
Margaret followed him out of the car and into the place.
Raymond told her to order, and she asked, "Don't I need to go home and cook for you?"
"By then, I might starve." Raymond scoffed, putting his phone and car keys on the table.
He was mocking her for not sticking to the contract.
But she was too hungry; filling her stomach was the priority.
Margaret didn't really like this cheap food; she grew up in a wealthy family.
It was only after being with Raymond that she got used to it.
Margaret pointed at the menu and ordered a burger, then got one for Raymond too.
It was his favorite. Once, she had made his preferences her own.
Raymond wasn't very hungry and only took a couple of bites of his burger.
Across the table, Margaret devoured her food and even asked for another serving.
It was the first time he saw her eat so ungracefully.
"You eat a lot." Raymond mocked.
Margaret shot back, "I haven't eaten all day. You can't expect me to work and not eat. Even capitalists aren't as heartless as you."
"Why haven't you eaten all day?" Raymond asked.
Was it because Lola bullied her, and she lost her appetite?
Margaret sneered. "You know very well."
"Now that you're full, you have the energy to piss me off again?" Raymond's eyes were cold.
He paid the bill, grabbed his stuff, and left the restaurant.
Margaret jogged to keep up with Raymond as he got into the front seat.
She asked if he wanted to go to the grocery store since she needed to buy toiletries but she hadn't had time to move today.
Raymond looked at her expectant eyes, her eyelashes fluttering like little fans. He almost agreed but reminded himself they were together to torment each other, not to build a relationship.
"Who do you think you are? You're just a nanny in my house, Margaret. Do you think you're worthy of shopping with me?" Raymond said coldly, lighting a cigarette and looking away.
Margaret's eyes showed disappointment, like she was waking up from a dream.
How could she still fantasize about holding hands and shopping like before?
What was she even thinking?
Margaret bit her lip in self-mockery, her slender fingers clenched tightly. "I overstepped. You go back first; I'll buy my things and go home."
With that, Margaret turned and entered the mall.
Even though she knew he hated her and was only trying to torment her, his cold words still made her feel like she couldn't breathe.
Her clear tears welled up in her eyes.
Entering the mall, a wave of heat hit her.
She wiped away her tears with her fingertips.
After picking out toiletries, her cart was full, and she worried about how she would carry everything back.
While paying, a large hand suddenly patted her shoulder.
Margaret shuddered slightly and turned around.
"I didn't expect to see you again!" Daniel said.
Daniel was wearing a dark hoodie, a baseball cap, and jeans, smiling brightly.
Margaret was stunned. "Daniel? What are you doing here?"
The cashier reminded Margaret to take out her items.
Margaret took out her stuff with Daniel's help.
She kept saying, "Thank you."
"I'm also from Silverbrook. Is it surprising to see me here?" Daniel smiled.
Margaret quickly waved her hand. "No, I went to your office before, and they said you suddenly resigned. I thought..."
"You thought Raymond had something to do with it?" Daniel asked.
The cashier finished ringing up the items and gave the total. Margaret was about to pay when Daniel got it first. "I paid for her."
"Daniel, you're too kind."
"It's nothing, and it's not much anyway."
Daniel paid for his own items, which were few and didn't even fill a plastic bag.
Margaret's items were heavy, and Daniel offered to help carry them, making Margaret feel embarrassed.
They walked towards the exit.
Daniel laughed. "It wasn't a sudden resignation. My family wanted me to retire and help with the family business. So it had nothing to do with Raymond. He isn't that petty."
"Then why did you deactivate your WhatsApp account?" Margaret asked suspiciously.
He explained, "I changed my phone number."
Margaret finally understood. She had misunderstood Raymond, thinking Daniel's resignation was related to him.
"Seeing you're okay, I'm relieved," Margaret murmured.
As they left the mall, a cold breeze hit their faces.
"Daniel, thank you. Give me the bags," Margaret said, reaching for the shopping bags.
Not far away, a shiny black car was parked.
Raymond, smoking a cigarette, squinted at Margaret and Daniel at the grocery store entrance, chatting animatedly and seemingly reluctant to part.
Raymond called Margaret, but her phone was still off.
