Chapter 136 How Did It Come to This

As soon as those words hit her ears, Margaret felt like her heart was being squeezed by a giant hand. She gasped for air and quickly asked, "But we just paid the medical bills a few days ago. How can we be out of money already?"

Nancy said, "There’s still two million dollars left in the account, but that jerk Raymond has frozen it! Without the money, they’ll have to stop the medication!"

Nancy’s voice on the phone was shaky and tearful. "Margaret, Robert said your dad is recovering well. But stopping the medication now is super dangerous! Margaret, be honest with me, did you and Raymond have another fight?"

Margaret gripped her phone tightly. She knew exactly what was going on. Raymond was using Marlon to force her into having this baby!

They were a couple. She loved him, trusted him, protected him, yet he deceived her, hurt her, and now wanted to harm her. How did their once good relationship come to this?

Nancy said, "Margaret, I know you’re feeling wronged, and I don’t want you to be treated like this. But we have no other options. The Hughes Family is on the brink of collapse. If you anger Raymond, your dad will suffer even more. Do you understand? You’re a good kid. For my sake, can you compromise? Only you can save your dad! Raymond only cares about you. Haven’t you noticed? He doesn’t care about the rest of us at all."

Listening to Nancy’s rambling, Margaret felt a sharp pain in her heart and her throat felt like it was blocked with lead. Tears streamed down her face.

Hearing her cry, Nancy also started crying on the phone, saying, "Margaret, I warned you not to marry him back then. But now, we have no choice. You can’t just watch your dad die, can you? Without your dad, I can’t go on either. Can you endure a little longer? Once your dad wakes up and gets better, everything will be over. Then we can find another way."

Margaret wiped her tears, sobbing.

How could she tell Nancy that things wouldn’t get better. She had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, and now, with her pregnancy, she would only perish more swiftly.

How could she tell Nancy that she wouldn’t be able to stay with them in the future?

Things had come to this point, and it seemed like there was no one to blame. It seemed like no one was at fault; they just had different positions.

Raymond was ruthless, but his parents had died because of Marlon.

She was innocent, but she was Marlon’s daughter.

The Hughes Family and Marlon were in this situation because of her. She couldn’t just ignore it.

She had to admit that Raymond had completely grasped her weakness.

"I’ll talk to Raymond. I won’t let anything happen to Dad," Margaret said, her voice weary.

Nancy, perhaps feeling sorry for her, cried loudly on the phone, saying they had become a burden to Margaret.

Margaret smiled and comforted her, "What are you talking about? You have nurtured me for twenty-three years. Now that I’m grown up, it’s my turn to protect you."

After hanging up the phone, she took out her phone and called Raymond. Even after she had finished getting dressed, he still hadn’t answered.

Margaret, holding back her anger, sent him a text message.

Margaret: [See the message and call me back. We need to talk.]

After freshening up, Mary brought her a nutritious meal for pregnant women and set it down in front of her.

Margaret couldn't bring herself to eat. She was too worried about Marlon being cut off from his medication and Raymond not returning her calls.

Seeing her not eating, Mary got a bit anxious. "Mrs. Hughes, you need to eat. I also need to take a video of you eating and send it to Alvin."

Margaret remembered that she hadn't eaten dinner last night, and Mary had knelt in the rain for so long. She couldn't take out her frustrations on others;after all, Mary was innocent.

Margaret forced herself to finish the porridge despite her full stomach.

Mary took a video of her eating and sent it to Alvin.

"Mary, can you get in touch with Raymond?" Margaret suddenly asked.

Mary was taken aback.

"Can you help me contact him and ask him to meet with me? I need to talk to him face-to-face," Margaret said, tears streaming down her face. "Mary, my dad's medication has been cut off. Please help me contact him, okay?"

Mary hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed. She took out her phone and called Raymond. But Raymond still didn't answer.

But Raymond still didn't answer.

"Mrs. Hughes, don't worry. Mr. Howard is probably busy right now. I'll send him a message. He's a polite person; he'll definitely respond when he sees it," Mary said, sending a message on her phone.

Margaret thanked her, and Mary took the empty plate to the kitchen to wash.

Margaret couldn't wait any longer, but she couldn't leave the house; there were bodyguards everywhere outside.

Having no other options, she could only call Alvin.

Alvin answered immediately, his tone full of concern.

Margaret explained her situation, and Alvin promised to contact Raymond right away.

He told her not to worry; Raymond wouldn't really harm Marlon. Raymond just wanted her to give in.

Margaret didn't believe him. In her view, Raymond had descended to a level of wickedness beyond compare.Alvin was just saying that because he was Raymond's subordinate, trying to comfort her.

Later that night, Margaret finally received a call from Alvin. "Mrs. Howard, I've conveyed your message to Mr. Howard. He's currently at Ironwood Lane visiting graves. He'll come to see you once he returns."

"When will he be back?" Margaret asked urgently.

Alvin replied, "Mr. Howard will leave early tomorrow morning. He has a meeting at noon and will come to see you after lunch."

"I can't wait until then! Alvin, can you help me get him to come back tonight or I can go to him?" Margaret was shocked. Was Raymond trying to drag this out until Marlon died?

Alvin said in a troubled tone, "Mrs. Howard, you know Mr. Howard's temper. You should wait. Based on my judgment, Marlon shouldn't be in any immediate danger."

Alvin, being an outsider and having been with Raymond for many years, could somewhat guess Raymond's intentions. Raymond undoubtedly wanted to force Margaret to give birth, which was why he cut off Marlon's medication.

But to Margaret, it sounded like an excuse. She thought Alvin didn't want to offend Raymond, so she didn't say more and silently hung up the phone.

The phone charging on the coffee table suddenly vibrated. She thought it must be Raymond contacting her. He wasn't as heartless as he claimed, making her wait until tomorrow noon.

She was anxious but overjoyed. she quickly ran over and picked up the phone.
