Chapter 135 Running Out of Medicine
Margaret let out a bitter laugh. It was pretty ironic that she, a lady from the Hughes Family, had lost even her basic freedom.
She had wanted to go out for a walk because the sun was shining brightly today. Winter in Silverbrook was usually all about endless rain or heavy snow. Seeing such bright sunlight was rare.
Mary noticed her wanting to go out and suggested they take a walk in the garden outside the villa.
"No need." Margaret said, holding a cup of warm water, and turned to go upstairs. Mary followed her.
Mary made the meal and brought it to her.
Margaret just told Mary to leave it there. Even though the meal looked pretty good, Margaret had no desire to eat.
Suddenly, Margaret's phone rang.
It was her doctor calling. She answered the phone without any expression.
The doctor's tone was even more urgent than last time. "Mrs. Hughes, your health can't wait any longer. You need to come to the hospital for surgery immediately! If you delay any further, it could be fatal!"
Hearing this, she felt a mix of emotions. Of course, she knew it could be fatal, but she couldn't even leave the house.
Raymond clearly wanted her dead. He probably didn't care about the baby in her womb; it was just another way to torment her.
Margaret listened to the doctor go on and on about the pros and cons. She didn't know what to say and eventually hung up silently.
Seeing the untouched meal, Mary was a bit worried and said, "Mrs. Hughes, no matter how mad you are at Mr. Howard, you still need to eat. The baby needs nutrition."
"Even if I eat, the baby won't survive," Margaret said with a bitter smile.
Maybe because her body was getting weaker, Margaret had no appetite.
Whether she ate or not, she was doomed. What was the point of eating?
Margaret got up from the sofa and went to the master bedroom, hearing Mary complaining to Raymond on the phone.
She sneered. It was normal; Mary was sent by Raymond to keep an eye on her, but she didn't blame Mary. Everyone had a hard time surviving in this world. There was no need to make things harder for Mary.
At that moment, Raymond was still on Ironwood Lane. Hearing Mary's anxious voice on the phone, he didn't get angry. He just said coldly that he understood.
Then he said a few more words and hung up.
He then called Robert and instructed, "Cut off Marlon's medication."
"What? Mr. Howard, Marlon's condition just stabilized. Cutting off his medication now is very dangerous!" Robert was shocked on the other end of the line.
Raymond snorted coldly, "Are you saying I can't give you orders?"
Robert said, "Mr. Howard, please calm down. I'll do it right away."
Margaret was sleeping soundly when a thunderclap woke her up.
She opened her eyes and heard the sound of heavy rain hitting the leaves.
The thunder made her pale face even paler.
Because she hadn't closed the curtains and was most afraid of thunder, she wrapped herself in a blanket. She got out of bed, and prepared to close the curtains.
But at the window, she saw a familiar figure kneeling in the rain. Next to the figure stood a man in a suit, holding an umbrella.
Margaret thought she had seen it wrong and quickly rubbed her eyes. But when she looked again, the figure was still kneeling in the rain. That figure was none other than Mary!
Margaret hurriedly left the master bedroom, went downstairs holding the wooden railing, grabbed an umbrella, and ran to Mary.
Mary was soaked, rainwater dripping from her hair down her cheeks, looking absolutely pitiful.
"Mary, what are you doing? Get up!" Margaret held the umbrella over her with one hand and tried to pull her up with the other.
But Mary didn't dare to get up.
Margaret looked at Alvin, who was standing nearby, and asked, "Alvin, what's going on? Why is Mary kneeling here?"
Alvin said, "Mr. Howard said that if the food Mary prepared didn't suit Mrs. Howard's taste, she needed to be punished. From now on, if Mrs. Howard doesn't eat, Mary has to kneel here and beg you to eat."
"Whenever Mrs. Howard is willing to eat, she can get up." Alvin pursed his lips and repeated Raymond's instructions.
Margaret was stunned and said, "I don't eat because I have no appetite. It has nothing to do with her!"
"Mrs. Howard, it's raining heavily outside. You should go back inside! If anything happens to the baby, none of us here will be able to bear the responsibility!" Mary wiped her tears and said, "Mrs. Howard, I'm just a normal person. I chose to kneel myself. Mr. Howard gave me two choices: either resign or kneel and apologize to Mrs. Howard! My family is poor, so I chose this path myself!"
Mary bit her lip and said, "It's my own fault for not being able to make food that Mrs. Howard likes. Mr. Howard's anger is entirely justified! After all, Mr. Howard's pay is much higher than anywhere else."
Margaret didn't expect Raymond to be so shameless!
It wasn't enough to torment her; he had to make Mary kneel too.
Margaret took out her phone and found Raymond's number.
The phone rang repeatedly, but he didn't answer. It was obvious he was doing it on purpose
Alvin looked at Margaret and suggested, "Mrs. Howard, you should eat. If you eat, Mary can get up."
Margaret had no choice. To stop Mary from kneeling, she turned and went upstairs.
The food was in the microwave, ready to eat.
She called Alvin on a video call and, in front of him, started shoveling food into her mouth.
But she felt so oppressed. Thinking about how Raymond had pushed her to this point and how she could do nothing about it, tears fell into her bowl, mixing with the food she ate.
Her stomach felt painfully full, but she feared Raymond would be still dissatisfied and would continue to torment Mary. So, no matter how upset she was or how full she felt, she ate every last bite.
Mary got up, went upstairs to take a hot shower, changed her clothes, and tearfully apologized to Margaret for causing her trouble.
Alvin gazed at the gradually dimming lights in the apartment, holding a black umbrella. He called Raymond, "Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard has already eaten, but she's in a very poor mood. It would be best if you could comfort her."
Raymond said nothing and hung up.
He wanted to comfort her, but he knew that if he did, she would only become more demanding.
Was it really so hard for her to have a baby? Did it have to come to the point of a hunger strike?
However, It was not up to her. Whether she wanted to or not, she had to have this baby. Only when the child was born safely could their relationship return to what it once was!
Margaret didn't sleep well all night, feeling like something was going to happen.
Sure enough, she received a call from Nancy the next morning.
Nancy said into the phone, "Margaret, did you and Raymond have another fight? Is he angry again?"
Margaret bit her lip, holding the phone, not wanting Nancy to worry, so she lied, "No, Mom, don't worry."
Nancy said, "Don't lie to me. Robert cut off your father's medication today. Did you know that?"
