Chapter 604 Bowing Down Only for You
Maybe it was because she looked better now.
Her makeup skills, which were pretty average, somehow seemed to work.
The cheap clothes she had bought from street vendors, when worn again, seemed to have increased in value. Maybe this was the legendary effect of looking good enough to make even a burlap sack look stylish.
After a good shower and a restful night's sleep, she felt refreshed.
The next day, she put on light makeup, wore her usual clothes, and slipped into a pair of delicate high-heeled sandals before heading to The Taylor Group.
While waiting for the elevator, she saw the manager approaching. This was the same manager who oversaw the live streaming department and had interviewed her a month ago.
The manager saw her, recognized the clothes but not the person, and hesitated to greet her, fearing he might embarrass himself by mistaking her identity.
Nia smiled and greeted him first. The manager looked surprised, "Ms. Thompson? Is that you?"
"Yeah, it's me," she nodded.
The manager took a closer look at her, his eyes wide with amazement. "If you hadn't spoken, I wouldn't have recognized you. Did you get plastic surgery?"
"Yeah," Nia pursed her lips and gathered her courage to ask, "Do you think I look better now than before?"
The manager nodded sincerely.
She continued to probe, "Can I be a co-host now?"
"Ms. Thompson, you got plastic surgery just to apply for the co-host position?"
"Yeah."
"Ms. Thompson, with your current appearance, you could be a main host. But—"
"What's the problem?"
"The co-host position has already been filled. It's someone from the main host's team, and she doesn't want anyone from our side. Ms. Thompson, you're a bit late." The manager looked at her regretfully.
With those words, all of Nia's hopes were instantly shattered.
She had worked so hard, borrowed money, and undergone surgery, only to find out the position was already taken?
Defeated by connections?
Nia blinked, remaining silent for a long time.
Seeing her disappointment, the manager offered a suggestion, "Ms. Thompson, if you want to be a co-host, why not go directly to Walter?"
"What?" Nia looked at him, puzzled.
He smiled, "Walter seems to care about you. If he speaks up, it'll be different. Why don't you try asking him?"
The manager's look seemed to imply that there was something between them.
Nia sighed, "You're mistaken. Walter is just my boss."
If there was something between them, would she need to get surgery?
"Mr. Wood's words carry the most weight. Think about it."
The elevator opened.
The manager went in first, but she was in a bad mood and decided to take the stairs.
When she arrived at the CEO's office, a group of people gathered around her, their faces struck with astonishment.
They were amazed by her transformation and gossiped about why she had undergone surgery.
She valued her dignity. If word got out that she had done all this to become a co-host and failed, she would be ridiculed.
Nia didn't respond.
Just then, Walter arrived, carrying a briefcase and dressed in a business suit. The high-quality fabric highlighted his excellent physique and distinguished demeanor.
Walter glanced coldly at the gossiping crowd, "Is your work done? Did the company hire you to gossip?"
The crowd dispersed and returned to their desks.
Nia kept her head down, her long hair covering her face, making it hard for Walter to see clearly.
He glanced at her, thinking she had just returned from vacation.
"Come to my office." He tapped the desk with his well-manicured fingers, his voice deep and magnetic.
Nia watched him walk into his office.
She overheard some female colleagues discussing, "I just realized Walter is quite handsome. Not inferior to Mr. Taylor."
"I've known for a while. Walter is the assistant, and when Mr. Taylor is around, his presence overshadows Walter's. Now that Mr. Taylor isn't here, Walter stands out."
"I wonder what kind of woman is worthy of him. Whoever gets him is really lucky."
Nia smirked.
It certainly wouldn't be her.
Her phone buzzed.
She glanced at it and saw a brief message from Walter: [Where are you?]
She got up slowly, unsure of how Walter would react to her new look, whether he would be as surprised as the live streaming manager.
Holding her phone, she walked towards his office.
With each step, she felt inexplicably anxious.
She didn't know why, but seeing him made her nervous.
She had a deep respect and reverence for Walter.
She dared not slack off.
Walter sat in his chair, set his briefcase aside, and opened his computer without glancing at her.
He only noticed her presence when he heard the sound of high heels on the floor.
The air was filled with the scent of cheap body wash and shampoo.
He didn't look up but casually picked up a folder from the desk and handed it to her, "These are the materials needed for the meeting in half an hour. Review them. You'll be presenting."
"Okay, Mr. Wood." She reached out to take it.
Walter looked up.
A complex emotion flashed in his eyes.
He squinted, and as he looked several times, he realized that the person standing before him was Nia.
But her face was completely different.
Her features were flawless, lightly made up, and her simple dress made her look very innocent.
Her large, misty eyes were pitiful and endearing.
Though enhanced by technology, she indeed looked much more refined.
Walter instantly understood that she hadn't gone home during her leave but had used his money for plastic surgery.
But why did she get surgery?
To find a man? To marry herself off while she was still young?
Walter's expression changed slightly.
He tightened his grip on the folder.
Nia noticed she couldn't take the folder, "Mr. Wood—"
Her tone was a mix of coquettishness and fear.
He suspected she was deliberately trying to charm him.
"Used my money for surgery?" Walter asked with a cold smile.
She nodded, "Yes."
"Didn't it hurt to have your face cut?"
"They used anesthesia, so it wasn't too bad." Nia thought for a moment and said something insincere.
She suddenly remembered the manager's suggestion and decided to try asking for the co-host position.
"Mr. Wood, I—" have something to discuss.
He let go of the folder and took out a cigarette, "Review the materials and prepare for the meeting."
"Okay." Nia took the folder and turned to leave.
The meeting was scheduled to start in half an hour.
Held in the conference room.
Nia smoothly presented the project materials to the attendees. She was surprised to find that throughout the meeting, Walter's sharp gaze was fixed on her. She was actually quite intimidated by his gaze, but she realized she needed to be confident and meet his eyes if she wanted a chance.
With this thought, her gaze became firm and composed as she met his eyes.
