Chapter 403: An Unexplained Unease, Making Her Breathless
Sarah was crying to Raymond, saying that if the phone hadn't shown it was connected, she would have thought he hadn't answered at all.
Raymond didn't say a word, not even to comfort her.
Halfway through her crying, Raymond hung up on her.
Sarah was furious and called Evelyn: "Move the plan to tonight!"
"Ms. Martinez, we agreed, just one injection for Margaret. I'm not getting involved in anything that could get me jailed," Evelyn's hesitant voice came through the phone.
Sarah lowered her voice and snapped, "Don't negotiate with me! I'm warning you, your daughter is in my hands. If this blows up, it's on you. If Margaret doesn't lose her memory tonight, you can say goodbye to your daughter!"
On her way back to the apartment, Margaret felt a strange sense of unease. Her eyelids kept twitching, and she had a feeling something bad was going to happen, but she couldn't pinpoint what.
The anxiety made it hard for her to breathe.
She went to the grocery store and bought some of Raymond's favorite foods, then texted him to come home early. But even after she finished cooking, there was no reply.
He used to reply instantly. What was going on today?
Was he mad at her for supposedly mistreating his benefactor?
But it wasn't her fault. Sarah had provoked her first, hadn't she?
Raymond had told her that morning that he would protect her from Sarah.
So why wasn't he answering her calls or texts now?
At ten o'clock that night, Margaret was still waiting on the couch when Raymond finally came home.
He looked like he'd had a few drinks, his face tired, carrying his briefcase. He loosened his tie as he walked in, looking troubled.
Margaret got up from the couch and ran over with a smile. "Raymond, wash your hands, dinner's ready."
Raymond paused, glanced at the table, then looked at her. "Margaret, I already ate with a client tonight. You go ahead."
Already ate?
Margaret's smile froze. Hadn't he seen her messages?
If he had, why didn't he come home for dinner?
"Why didn't you reply to my messages?" she finally asked.
Raymond pressed his lips together. "Work was busy today, my phone was on silent. Margaret, I'm going to take a shower. You eat."
He turned and went into the closet to change.
Margaret, feeling a lump in her throat, followed him. "Raymond, did you ignore my calls and texts on purpose? Are you mad at me?"
Raymond's fingers paused on his shirt buttons.
He had received a complaint call from Sarah today and ignored it. Then he saw the video Sarah sent, her face smeared with cake, looking ridiculous.
Sarah had sent several voice messages, which he didn't reply to but listened to all of them.
Margaret had flaunted her five-million-dollar ring in front of Sarah, showing off and putting her down.
Sarah had helped him financially. He didn't like her, but he couldn't just watch Margaret bully her.
It seemed like Margaret's old temper was back.
So he had deliberately ignored Margaret's messages and calls, had a few drinks, and then came home.
Raymond couldn't argue with Margaret because maintaining their current harmony had taken a lot of effort and energy.
He had to cherish it and be good to Margaret.
So he could only silently deal with his displeasure.
His long fingers continued unbuttoning his shirt.
Margaret, seeing he wasn't speaking, pressed on. "Did Sarah call to complain? Did you feel sorry for her?"
Raymond frowned, not looking at Margaret.
"Raymond, do you like her? Is she your ex? Did you take wedding photos with her? She must be very important to you, right? More than just a benefactor?"
The barrage of questions made Raymond's frown deepen.
Maybe it was the alcohol, but he was less patient. He turned his head, his gaze heavy. "Margaret, enough."
"Enough?"
Margaret echoed his words.
Raymond placed his hands on her shoulders, trying to comfort her. "Go eat. I don't like her. Don't be willful anymore."
"You think I'm willful?" Margaret blinked her dry eyes. She had been willful today, thinking Raymond had given her the confidence to act out, believing he would always back her up.
That he would never blame her. But now Margaret realized that might not be the case.
Raymond looked exhausted. "That's not what I meant. Margaret, please listen, okay?"
"Raymond, haven't I listened enough? You didn't want me to regain my memory, I listened. You didn't want me to get too close to Daniel, I listened. You wanted me to get the injection, I listened. Now you're giving me a hard time for Sarah?" Margaret said angrily.
Raymond, feeling misunderstood, frowned even more. "Margaret, let me explain again. Sarah is just a benefactor. She's very important to me. Without her, I wouldn't be where I am today."
So Sarah was that important, practically a lifesaver.
"Margaret, I should have married her. I broke my promise, and I owe her. You should cut her some slack for my sake. Do you know how she got the scars on her face? A car accident, saving me. Her face was injured because of me. Bullying her is making things hard for me. Between the two of you, I can't win."
Margaret felt her heart shatter into pieces.
Bleeding, fragmented, impossible to piece back together.
Margaret bit her lip. "Go take your shower. I know what to do."
"Margaret, good girl." Raymond kissed her forehead, then changed into his robe and went to the bathroom.
Margaret watched him walk away. She had stolen Sarah's happiness, taken her victory.
No wonder Sarah was so hostile.
Sarah had helped him, but he didn't want to be the bad guy who abandoned his first love, leading to this love triangle.
Margaret wanted Raymond to love her wholeheartedly, to have eyes only for her. But now she realized she was a joke.
She might be Raymond's wife, but she couldn't compare to Sarah.
She couldn't accept that he had another woman in his heart.
Was this the marriage she wanted?
Their wedding ceremony was just days away, but now Margaret was hesitant.
Margaret didn't eat the dinner she had prepared. She was too angry to eat.
She left a sticky note on the nightstand, packed a few clothes, and left.
In the bathroom, Raymond had no idea Margaret had left. His phone pinged with a message from Sarah: "Raymond, are you mad? Did I say too much? I'm not mad anymore. Please don't fight with your wife because of me. I would feel so guilty."
