Chapter 594 She Didn't Expect Her Most Embarrassing Moment to Be Seen by Him
Nia's wrist was being yanked violently by the man.
The pain was so intense, she felt like her bones were about to shatter.
At that critical moment, the sound of sirens blared.
Several uniformed officers stepped out of the police car and quickly restrained the man. "We got a report you were harassing a woman. You're coming with us."
"Officer, there's been a misunderstanding. This isn't harassment. She's my girlfriend, and we had a little argument. I'm just trying to make up with her. You can't believe everything people say. Would I really harass someone right outside The Taylor Group?" The man struggled, trying to smile at the officers.
One officer glanced at Nia, who was rubbing her wrist. "Ma'am, is what he's saying true?"
Nia remained silent.
"Don't be afraid. If you're really being harassed, you need to tell us," another officer encouraged.
Nia finally spoke up, "He's lying. We broke up months ago. He's been threatening, intimidating, and stalking me. Officers, please take him away and teach him a lesson."
"Fuck, you bitch, what lies are you spewing?" The man glared at her viciously.
To avoid further trouble, Nia lied, "I already have a boyfriend. Stop bothering me, or I'll call the cops on you again."
"You evil woman, you got a new boyfriend that fast? You must have been cheating on me all along! When I get out, I'll find that guy and kill him!" the man shouted.
The officer cuffed him. "Calm down. You're coming with us."
The man was shoved into the police car.
Nia clung to the railing of The Taylor Group, exhaling in relief. She had no idea who had called the police to help her. She also didn't know if that awful man would finally leave her alone.
She had planned to treat herself to a nice meal to lift her spirits, but now she had lost her appetite. She bought some instant food and headed back to the employee dormitory. After all, she owed Walter several million dollars. If she didn't save money, she'd be working her whole life to pay it off.
Back at the dorm, she ate her instant meal.
Walter called, his voice indifferent. "Are you okay?"
Without thinking much, she replied, "I'm fine."
Of course, a capitalist wouldn't call just to check on her well-being. It was all a prelude. He continued, "Check your email. I sent you some project materials. Try to finish the project proposal tonight and submit it to me tomorrow."
"Okay."
As she was about to hang up, Nia couldn't help but ask, "Walter, do I really owe you two million dollars? Could there be a mistake?"
"What do you mean? Do you think I'm lying?" Walter's tone turned cold.
"No, I just think Mr. Taylor wouldn't be so petty as to convert a gift into a debt." Nia felt something was off. Walter had said he covered the cost of the gift for her.
The money was to be deducted from her salary, but she only made eight thousand dollars a month. How many years would she have to work to pay it off? She'd be old by then.
Walter chuckled coldly over the phone. "Daniel has a lot of money, but he's not stupid. His money doesn't grow on trees. If you don't believe me, I'll give you his number, and you can ask him yourself."
Things had already been awkward at home. Daniel had been drugged by his parents, and she had ended up in his bed. She couldn't face Daniel again, let alone ask him about this.
Indeed, who had that much money to throw around?
Walter had taken her in, given her a job with room and board. She had no reason to doubt his character. Besides, Walter probably didn't need to scam her out of a hundred thousand dollars.
"No need. I believe you."
"Can you work on the project proposal now?"
"Of course."
Satisfied with her answer, he hung up.
Big companies were really not places for people to work. She was swamped during work hours and had to work overtime after hours.
Fortunately, she had a single dorm room, so she didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone by working late.
She worked until three in the morning and finally finished.
She didn't even have time to wash her face. She set an alarm for eight-thirty and collapsed into bed.
The alarm went off quickly.
She struggled to get up, got ready, did her makeup, and grabbed the project proposal she had worked on all night. She hurriedly bought breakfast and headed to The Taylor Group.
She had just finished her breakfast when Walter arrived with his briefcase.
His office was on the way to her desk. Smelling the breakfast, he frowned and said in an even colder tone, "Don't eat in the office anymore."
"Okay." Nia felt a bit bitter. She had brought breakfast to the office to save time, and this was the first time. She hadn't expected Walter to notice.
His elegant fingers tapped on her desk. "Come to my office."
Nia stood up nervously and followed him.
In his office, he placed his briefcase on the desk.
Then he sat down and opened his phone. "How did the project proposal turn out last night?"
"It's done. I sent it to your WhatsApp." Nia said as she sent the document to his WhatsApp.
As soon as he logged in, he received it.
He clicked on it with the mouse and scanned it.
The air became eerily quiet.
Nia's heart was on fire, and every second felt like an eternity of torment.
She noticed his expression growing more serious.
Her nervous fingers clenched into fists.
"Come here," his voice was flat.
Nia walked over and heard him say, "Look at the computer screen."
She looked at the screen.
They were very close, and she felt a bit uncomfortable.
He pointed out a bunch of issues with the proposal.
But she was zoning out, lost in thought. He squinted at her. "Did you remember everything I just said?"
"Yes," she nodded.
"Then repeat what I just said."
Her mind went blank. She had been too nervous to listen.
Walter's smile turned colder. "What are you thinking about? Are you still worried about that ex of yours who got arrested?"
"How did you know—" She was stunned.
Walter smirked. "I called the police."
So that was it.
She hadn't expected him to see her in such a sorry state.
"Ms. Thompson, this kind of thing that affects The Taylor Group, it won't happen again. Leave now. I'll send you my comments once I'm done." Walter adjusted his tie, still looking handsome.
As Nia reached the door, she turned back and sincerely apologized, "Thank you, Walter."
"I'm doing this for The Taylor Group, not for you." He took out a cigarette, lit it, and put it between his lips.
Nia didn't mind. "I know, but I still want to thank you. I'll work hard and pay off my debt to you as soon as possible."
She wasn't stupid. For a girl from her background, the only way out was to improve herself and break away from her past. Only by becoming stronger would she have the leverage to claim her happiness.
