Chapter 197 The Only Way for Margaret to Wake Up
Raymond's face got darker as he tightened his grip on her wrist and sneered, "Mrs. Hughes, if you know what's good for you, you'll wake her up right now! Otherwise, you, Marlon, and the whole Hughes Family are gonna pay big time!"
Nancy yelled, "Raymond!" She was older than him, but he didn't give a damn about respect. He was cold-hearted, and it made Nancy furious.
Raymond suddenly let go of her wrist, making her stumble against the operating table and almost fall. Luckily, Alvin caught her just in time.
Nancy knew Alvin was Raymond's guy, so she didn't bother being nice. She shook off his hand, not wanting him to touch her.
"If Margaret wakes up, I'll get back to treating Marlon! If not, you better get ready for two funerals in the Hughes Family!" Raymond shot Nancy a cold look before storming out of the operating room.
Alvin looked nervously at Nancy and Margaret on the table, but he had no other options. Nancy stepping in was their only shot now, even if it seemed crazy and unreliable.
Alvin followed Raymond out of the room. The door slammed shut. Nancy covered her mouth, her voice shaking as hot tears fell onto Margaret's pale cheeks.
Margaret was her only daughter. They had protected Margaret for over twenty years, never even raising their voices at her. She was innocent and kind, more so than most her age, clueless about the world's harshness and deceit.
Nancy had been raised the same way, like a flower in a greenhouse. She didn't see anything wrong with it. She and Marlon never expected Margaret to achieve great things because Marlon was already well-off. They had enough money to ensure Margaret would be taken care of for life.
But now Nancy regretted it. She regretted spoiling Margaret too much. Without any street smarts, Margaret had been used by some poor guy as a stepping stone.
If Margaret had listened and married a wealthy young man of equal status, she might not have been super happy, but she wouldn't be in this mess.
Nancy looked at Margaret, who now seemed lifeless. Marlon was in bad shape, and now Margaret was too. Her hot tears fell on Margaret.
Nancy took a deep breath, reached out with trembling fingers, and touched her cheek. Margaret's face was cold. "Margaret, it's Mom. I'm here. I'm so sorry, honey. I've been so worried about your dad that I forgot to take care of you. I didn't know what you went through to end up like this. Margaret, my sweet girl, don't sleep anymore. Please, wake up."
Nancy sobbed, pleading, "The Hughes Family is already in shambles. Your dad and I only have you. You know your dad's condition. If you both die, how am I supposed to go on? I can't. I only have you and your dad."
"Margaret, can you hear me? Sweetie, you shouldn't have done something so reckless. Life is precious. Once you're gone, you're really gone. There's no coming back. Raymond said if you wake up, your dad's treatment will start again. Hubert mentioned your dad's doing better. Once the treatment resumes, he'll wake up soon. Margaret, did you hear that? Please, wake up. Don't sleep anymore. There's no problem we can't solve. Margaret." Nancy cried so hard she almost passed out.
Then she saw Margaret's fingers twitch slightly. "Margaret, you heard me, didn't you? I knew you could hear me! Open your eyes and look at me, please? Let's wait for your dad to wake up together. We'll be a happy family again! Margaret, don't overthink it. Even though things are tough, there are still people who love you. I love you so much. Your dad and I love you more than anything in this world. If someone has to go, I'd rather it be me than you.''
She added, ''You're still so young, only twenty-three. It doesn't matter if I die, but you can't. Margaret, I can't hold on much longer. If something happens to you, I'm really done for, and the Hughes Family will fall apart. Do you understand? I've made it this far because you're still here! Honey, if you hear me, open your eyes and look at this world. It's so beautiful, you wouldn't want to leave us."
Margaret's mind started to clear up. She heard Nancy's voice. She also heard her say that if she woke up, Marlon's treatment would start again. The Hughes Family wouldn't fall apart.
Margaret couldn't just die. If she did, what would happen to the Hughes Family? They were already in this mess because of her. She couldn't be reckless anymore.
Nancy was right; she still had reasons to stay. Margaret still wanted to see Marlon wake up and say goodbye to him in person. There was no point in dying like this.
Margaret wanted to open her eyes, wanted to hug Nancy, but her eyelids felt like they were weighed down with lead, so heavy she couldn't open them.
After a great effort, she finally opened her eyes. She saw Nancy holding her and crying in the operating room.
She didn't know why, but even though she had resolved to leave the operating room alive, her mind had suddenly become foggy, and she had uncontrollably fallen asleep. Then she heard Nancy crying and calling her name.
Margaret's throat was very dry and sore, swallowing felt like swallowing razor blades and saying, "Mom."
Nancy froze, tears still on her eyelashes. Then she hugged Margaret tightly and cried out loud, "Margaret, you're finally awake! You scared me to death, do you know that? Everyone thought you were dead and were going to send you to the crematorium!"
Margaret frowned. Was Raymond planning to send her to the crematorium before she was even dead?
Margaret thought to herself, 'Raymond, I've disappointed you again this time. Your wish has not come true once again.'
