Chapter 566 I Want to Get Married
Daniel's steps to leave Margaret were halted instantly by Raymond's words.
In the end, he didn't leave.
Half an hour later.
The door to the emergency room finally opened.
Lyric, unconscious, was wheeled into a regular hospital room.
He approached the doctor, who was removing his mask and began speaking on his own, "You must be Ms. Vaughn's family member?"
Daniel nodded.
"What I'm about to say, Mr. Taylor, you need to be prepared for." The doctor looked at him with a complex expression.
Daniel's heart sank, "Did we lose the baby?"
"Her health was already weak, and her emotional state during the pregnancy wasn't good. You probably didn't pay much attention to her, did you? Plus, she wasn't brought in on time. We did our best, but we couldn't save the baby," the doctor said softly.
Daniel's mind went blank.
The baby was gone.
"Mr. Taylor, that's not the main issue. The main issue is that the miscarriage severely damaged her body. You might have to consider adoption in the future."
"What do you mean by that?" Daniel stared at him, stunned.
The doctor knew Daniel was devastated but continued with difficulty, "Ms. Vaughn will likely have a hard time conceiving again. I'm sorry."
Daniel walked into the regular hospital room, feeling utterly powerless.
The room was dark, oppressively so.
He didn't turn on the light, just pulled up a chair and sat by the bed.
The butler had already been sent away.
It was just Lyric and Daniel in the room.
The moonlight tonight was cool and clear, streaming through the slightly open window, casting a slanted beam on Lyric.
She was in a hospital gown.
Her eyes were closed, her eye sockets sunken, her face pale and bloodless.
At this moment, Daniel realized that she no longer resembled Margaret at all.
He reached out to touch Lyric's fingertips, which were slightly cold.
Daniel was completely sober now.
He just wanted her to stay with him, even if it had nothing to do with love. But when he found out she knew the whole truth and was upset with him, he felt things were spiraling out of control.
He couldn't help but feel irritated and wanted to lash out.
But Daniel never intended for her to be unable to become a mother, to be unable to have children. When Della woke up and found out the baby was gone and she couldn't have children anymore, how would she react?
Daniel didn't dare to think about it; the thought terrified him.
At this moment, he felt like a sinner. Della might be immature, but she didn't deserve this.
A woman with such a tragic background, unable to have children—what man would want to marry her?
Daniel looked at her, feeling guilty, remorseful, and a bit heartbroken.
He stayed by her side, not leaving for a moment, perhaps out of responsibility, perhaps out of guilt.
At the end of the corridor, he bit down on a cigarette, finding today's smoke harsh and difficult to inhale.
The butler approached, trying to comfort him, "Mr. Taylor, Ms. Vaughn cares about you so much. When she wakes up, say some nice things, and everything will be fine. With today's advanced technology, who knows what the future holds? Don't blame yourself too much."
Daniel remained silent.
The butler continued, "If Ms. Vaughn wakes up and hears that Mr. Taylor is willing to marry her, maybe things will turn around."
Marry her?
Daniel's mind wandered, and he suddenly heard Della's joyful voice.
"Daniel, I really like you, I really like you. We're dating with the intention of getting married, you know?"
Then the doctor's voice.
"Ms. Vaughn was in a bad emotional state during her pregnancy. You probably didn't pay much attention to her, did you?"
It seemed true.
Daniel recalled texting Della to make soup for him because he wanted to drink it when he got home.
But then he received a call that Margaret was about to give birth and completely forgot about Della.
He saw the photos she sent him days later; she had cut her finger while cooking for him.
She tried to mend their relationship by pleading with Margaret, but he scolded her and then broke up with her.
Daniel couldn't bear to think any further. He had done so many terrible things.
When Della first saw him, her eyes were full of light.
"Mr. Taylor, can I treat you to dinner?"
"Daniel, I've brought you so many clients. Can you add me on WhatsApp?"
To get close to him, she worked as a maid at the neighboring estate.
Her gaze was so passionate.
Such a confident, vibrant person had become so despondent. Was it from the moment he approved her resignation and kept her?
She approached him out of love, her love so obvious. She was ten years younger than him, at an age where she couldn't hide her feelings, yet he thought she was trying to take a shortcut for money.
Maybe money wasn't as big a factor as he thought.
"Leave me alone for a while," Daniel said coldly.
The butler shook his head and turned to leave.
Daniel laughed mockingly. He had lectured Raymond about being brainless, but how was he any better in his own relationships?
He was also a man who played with someone's feelings, causing her to miscarry and become infertile.
Daniel wished to make amends. Missing out on Margaret made him indifferent to whom he married.
He had made a mistake and had to take responsibility.
If he didn't marry Della, she would be doomed to a life of loneliness, completely ruined.
The smoke stung his eyes.
He called Cade, who answered with a sarcastic tone, "You finally decided to call me?"
"I want to get married. I'll bring her back in a few days for you to meet," Daniel said coldly, the cigarette in his mouth moving as he spoke.
"You finally came to your senses and agreed to meet in Regal City? That's great, I support you," Cade said, beaming. "When you go, bring plenty of gifts to show our sincerity. Next Tuesday, you'll go meet them. Their time is already set. I was about to call you, but you beat me to it."
Daniel sneered. Cade was a businessman who would trade anything for profit, including marriage. Cade had gained his current status through an arranged marriage with the only daughter of the Taylor family.
A car accident had left no survivors. The Taylor family's company was forced to transfer to Cade.
The Taylor Group had grown stronger because of it. But Cade felt no guilt towards his wife.
Daniel didn't want to become such a heartless person. "I want to marry Della. She became infertile because of me, and I need to take responsibility."
"Daniel, how dare you! What good is she if she can't have children? What about the inheritance? I don't agree!"
"I'm just informing you, not asking for your permission," Daniel sneered.
Cade cursed, "What are you doing? You need to understand, you're not the head of the Taylor family yet. How dare you talk to me like that? I can let other things slide, but not your marriage. Next Tuesday, you will go meet them!"
He paused, then softened his tone, "Who is Della? Can she compare to the person I chose for you? If she can't have children, just compensate her. If you don't want to handle it, I'll take care of it. She might have been infertile from the start and is just trying to guilt-trip you. Don't be so naive. Women these days will do anything to latch onto a rich man."
Daniel didn't bother arguing and hung up.
Cade laughed in anger, loosening his tie. This ungrateful child was becoming more and more defiant.
His assistant came in with coffee. Cade took a sip and said, "Find out about someone for me, Della. Check her current whereabouts and her relationship with Daniel."
Cade's team was efficient.
Within minutes, the assistant returned with information, "Mr. Taylor, I found Della. Here are the details."
He handed Cade the file.
Cade glanced at it, then tore it up and threw it in the trash, "I thought she was someone important, but she's just a penniless intern."
