Chapter 21
Margaret didn't want Nancy to worry, so she just pressed her lips together and said, "Yeah, he told me, but I've been so stressed lately that I totally forgot. Mom, have they found the driver who caused the accident?"
Nancy replied, "I've already got Raymond on it, but no news yet. Margaret, we're at this point now. We gotta learn to move forward and not get stuck on past mistakes. It'll just make you feel worse."
Nancy held Margaret's hand and gave her a once-over.
In just a few days, Margaret had dropped a lot of weight. Nancy's heart felt like it was being shredded, and the pain was unbearable.
Margaret got what Nancy was hinting at. Nancy wanted her to stick with Raymond.
Nancy said, "You two haven't really talked in a year. When your dad had his accident, even though he was reluctant, he still helped. Without him, your dad would've been a goner. Now, The Hughes Group is in his hands, and our whole family depends on him to stay in Silverbrook.
"Take this chance while he's helping, apologize to him. Women shouldn't be too tough; you gotta learn to be soft. If you two stay distant for too long, it won't be good for you.
"Don't think I'm being harsh. We don't have a better option, and neither do you, Margaret. You're not the same Margaret you were before you got married. Your dad's down. Without him, we got no support.
"Life's brutal like that. One wrong move leads to another. We can only keep making mistakes. When your dad gets better, we'll figure something else out."
Margaret's throat felt tight, and her eyes were dry.
She wanted to tell Nancy that Raymond already had a family outside, and they even took wedding photos, just waiting for her to kick the bucket.
But the new silver hairs on Nancy's head these past few days was like silver knives stabbing at her eyes.
Tears silently rolled down her face, one after another, salty as they flowed into her mouth.
The words were stuck in her throat; she couldn't say them. She had already caused the Hughes family and Marlon so much harm. How could she tell the truth and make Nancy worry?
Margaret promised, "I'll live well and not let you worry."
As soon as Margaret finished speaking, Nancy pulled her into her arms and cried bitterly.
At the hospital, in the director's office, Raymond sat in a leather chair, still wearing black leather gloves, expressionless, making it impossible for anyone to guess his thoughts.
Alvin, dressed in a suit, stood straight beside Raymond.
The office door was knocked on and then opened.
Ashley White, with long curly hair, exquisite makeup, and a seductive figure, walked in holding a cup of coffee.
She was the nurse who had taken Margaret's money and had a bad attitude.
Ashley had even urged Margaret to quickly take Marlon away, or she would call security.
The first time she saw Raymond at the hospital, she was deeply impressed by his aura and presence.
Alvin had just found her and asked her to entertain Raymond.
She was present when Marlon was in danger and the money was delayed. She judged that Raymond didn't care much for Margaret, maybe even despised her.
So she saw this as a great opportunity. She deliberately took off her mask, changed out of her nurse's uniform, and put on a tight, low-cut, body-hugging dress and high heels.
She also put on makeup that she thought looked good.
Ashley walked over to Raymond in her high heels, bent down, and in a soft, coquettish voice said, "Mr. Howard, please have some coffee."
Raymond lifted his eyelids and saw her chest.
Ashley naturally noticed his gaze and thought he liked her. Then she became even bolder, moving closer to him, trying to sit on his lap.
