Chapter 421 The Curse on Raymond
Raymond's hand froze around the spoon as Margaret's unexpected words of affection hit him. His first reaction was disbelief.
Margaret wanted to remember him? That didn't seem right.
She hated him so much, she probably wished he was dead.
But he had definitely heard her say it!
Maybe it was because their journey had been so difficult, or perhaps because Margaret had said so many hurtful things to him.
Hearing her say, "I want to remember you", Raymond's eyes reddened slightly. It was true, persistence could move mountains!
Margaret noticed the change in his expression as she sipped the black chicken soup he offered her.
The soup tasted just like she used to love, but she didn't pay attention to it.
"Raymond."
"Yeah?"
"Your eyes are red."
"Because I'm happy." Raymond's voice softened, his nose stinging.
Margaret smiled faintly. "Is it because of me?"
"Yeah."
"Raymond, if I died one day, what would you do?" Margaret couldn't help but ask.
Raymond's hand trembled slightly as he fed her another spoonful of soup, then he steadied himself and continued.
Margaret smiled weakly, her eyes tired. "I remember asking you this many times. If you found out I died, would you cry? Would you be sad? Now I want to ask one last time."
"I'd be devastated, I'd break down, I might even go mad. So, Margaret, you mustn't let anything happen to you. In less than two weeks, you won't see me anymore." Raymond's words were a compromise.
The underlying message was, 'Margaret, don't die. I'll die before you do. If one of us has to die, I'd rather it be me.'
His expression was deeply sincere.
As if he truly loved her.
Raymond, seeing Margaret's silence, asked with red eyes, "Margaret, I said I love you, that I can't live without you. You're more important than my life. Do you believe me?"
He remembered Alvin's advice to speak kindly, and Daniel's words that as long as her heart was still with him, there was still time.
He wanted Margaret to change her mind, he wanted them to spend his remaining days together.
Margaret didn't say she believed him, nor did she say she didn't.
Whether she believed him or not didn't matter anymore.
His heart was big enough to hold many people, many things.
Her heart was small, separated by two lives. Even if he truly liked her, so what?
There was no going back.
"It doesn't matter if you don't believe me. I'll prove my love for you." Raymond said as he left.
Margaret scoffed. If it were before, she would have been overjoyed to hear those words.
She would have smiled in her sleep.
The Raymond of the past was always cold, aloof, even when people said he succeeded because of Margaret.
Back then, she longed for Raymond to walk towards her unwaveringly, to stop working and spend time with her, shopping, traveling.
Her phone buzzed again.
Sarah's WhatsApp message popped up: [Margaret, when are you going to divorce Raymond? Weren't you always so strong? Your parents are dead, and you still want to live with him? Don't you have nightmares? Haven't your parents come to haunt you?]
Margaret sighed deeply.
Sarah: [Did you fight with Raymond again? He just called me, saying he's coming over. Why are you so conflicted? You can't get over it, but you keep fighting with him, pushing him towards me?]
Margaret gripped her phone tightly, staring at the provocative messages.
She couldn't muster any anger.
Maybe it was because she was close to death, her heart was unusually calm.
Sarah: [Is it because of that photo that you fought with him? I was just giving him a ride home, and you're jealous? A rich man like Raymond could never belong to just you! Are you dreaming?]
Sarah: [Margaret, if you don't mind, you could beg me. Maybe I'll be kind and let Raymond not divorce you, keep your title as his wife! Maybe we could all have fun together. Honestly, you're terrible in bed. Raymond says you're too uptight. Look at my photo, see how well I take care of Raymond.]
Sarah: [He almost died of pleasure. He says I'm better than you. You've never given him a blowjob, have you?]
Sarah: [Raymond's cock tastes amazing. He's coming over soon. What flavor condom should we use? I bought peach, mint, and strawberry... Why aren't you saying anything? What flavor do you use?]
Endless messages flooded Margaret's WhatsApp.
She held her phone, calmly reading.
Her eyelashes trembled. If it were before, she would have smashed her phone in anger.
She would have called to curse Sarah out, fought with Raymond to the death.
But now, her mind was unusually clear.
Sarah's words were meant to sow discord.
Whether Raymond was really going to her or not didn't matter anymore.
What mattered was that everything would end today.
She wasn't calm because she was stupid or magnanimous, but because she had no right.
Once divorced, they would be strangers. Raymond wouldn't need to report anything to her.
His words earlier were sweet, but she was glad her heart wasn't swayed.
She deleted Sarah's WhatsApp messages and formatted her phone.
Let everything disappear.
The phone, and herself.
She opened her notebook on the bed, finding the latest countdown page.
It read: [Life countdown: 0 days. Let Raymond lose Margaret forever.]
Margaret felt something was missing. She took the pen clipped to the notebook cover, removed the cap, and looked out at the gloomy weather.
It was snowing again.
The pen scratched the paper, the scent of ink filling her nose.
Margaret: [One last wish: May Raymond live a long life, healthy and safe, never dying, living in loneliness and despair.]
By now, Margaret's feelings for Raymond were so complex, she couldn't even explain them.
She didn't know if she couldn't bear for him to die, or if death was too easy for him.
So she wrote the first part, wishing him a long, healthy life.
But thinking of his sins, her parents' tragic deaths, The Hughes Family's rapid decline, she couldn't forgive him, so she added, wishing him a life of loneliness and despair.
To lose her forever, to lose the girl who loved him most in the world!
This time, she was going to end it all...
