Chapter 558 He Is So Pitiful Alone

When it came to anything involving Margaret, Daniel was always quick to act, without a hint of hesitation. He even abruptly ended a meeting halfway through.

He completely forgot about his promise to Lyric to come home for dinner.

Lyric had a tough time preparing that meal. She wasn't used to cooking, and first, she cut her finger with the kitchen knife, then burned her hand with the oil from the pan.

She tried making Daniel's favorite dishes over and over, but none turned out right. In the end, she ordered takeout because she was afraid Daniel would be disappointed if he saw her failed attempts.

The takeout arrived at six in the evening, and she set the table.

But Daniel never showed up.

The message she sent him about her injured hand went unanswered.

By this time, he should have been off work.

Unable to wait any longer, she called him. The phone rang, but he didn't pick up.

It went to voicemail.

She then called Walter, asking, "Mr. Taylor hasn't left work yet?"

"No, Mr. Taylor left the office around three. Hasn't he come home?"

"It's fine, I'll wait a bit longer."

The food on the table had gone completely cold.

She called Daniel multiple times, but he never answered, and eventually, his phone was turned off.

Lyric was confused. Was he being distant to push her away? If so, why not just say it directly?

She wasn't one to overstay her welcome.

In the end, she ate the meal by herself.

It tasted like cardboard, utterly flavorless.

She couldn't sleep all night, waiting for Daniel to come back.

But he never did.

She wondered if he was with another woman.

She couldn't eat and felt nauseous all the time.

Lyric suspected she might have a stomach issue, or maybe she was getting sick. A friend had mentioned that her symptoms sounded like morning sickness, so she changed her appointment to see an obstetrician.

The doctor said she was likely pregnant, but they needed an ultrasound to be sure.

The ultrasound confirmed it.

Lyric clutched the prenatal report, her mind blank and chaotic. She was pregnant with Daniel's child, but with his current cold attitude, would he even want the baby? She was unsure.

Would he ask her to terminate the pregnancy?

Lyric put the prenatal report in her bag, took the prescribed prenatal vitamins, and walked out of the office, heading towards the hospital exit.

In the maternity ward.

Daniel walked into the room carrying a bowl of porridge.

He saw Margaret in her hospital gown, playing with the baby in her arms. She gently touched the baby's nose and eyes with her fingers.

"Margaret, it's time to eat. Let me hold the baby for a bit," Daniel said, taking the baby into his arms.

Margaret took the bowl of porridge and started eating.

The baby in Daniel's arms was very soft, almost boneless. It was a girl, with eyebrows and eyes like Margaret's, and lips like Raymond's.

Daniel was afraid of holding the baby wrong and didn't dare move much.

Margaret looked at him gratefully, "Mr. Taylor, thank you so much for bringing me to the hospital yesterday. I don't know what I would have done without you."

"You're almost at your due date. Where's Raymond?" Daniel asked, glancing at the baby and then at her.

Margaret smiled and explained, "He left for a business trip yesterday morning. We planned for him to be back tomorrow for the delivery. No one expected the baby to come early. The nanny had an emergency and took half a day off, so I was alone. It's not his fault."

Raymond was working hard to support the family. He was already on his way back.

"Still, he shouldn't have left you alone. The baby isn't just your responsibility," Daniel said, feeling indignant on her behalf.

Just then, Raymond rushed into the room, looking disheveled. He hadn't even had time to change his clothes. Seeing Margaret in the hospital bed, he hurried over, filled with guilt and concern. "Margaret, it's all my fault. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone on the trip. I promised to be with you. I missed such an important moment."

"It's okay. I'm fine now. I'm not that fragile," Margaret said, holding his hand. "Did you have breakfast?"

"No."

"Daniel brought me some porridge. If you don't mind, you can have some."

"Sure."

Daniel held the baby while Raymond sat on the bed and finished the porridge Margaret hadn't eaten.

Daniel suddenly felt out of place, wondering if he was just torturing himself by being there.

The baby started crying in his arms.

Daniel couldn't calm her down.

Raymond noticed and took the baby from him.

As soon as Raymond held her, the baby stopped crying and started smiling. It was clear she liked Raymond a lot.

When Daniel left, Raymond walked him out of the hospital. Daniel told him not to leave Margaret alone again, as it was too dangerous.

Raymond smiled and agreed, thanking him for his help. After some small talk, Raymond squinted at him and asked, "Are you seeing someone?"

"No."

"Bring her over sometime. Margaret and I can give you our approval. I have a good eye for people," Raymond said, patting his shoulder.

Daniel's face darkened, "You're overthinking it. Since you're back, my job here is done. I'm heading back to the office."

After watching him leave, Raymond returned to the room.

Margaret, playing with the baby, said to Raymond, "Don't you know any good, decent girls for Daniel? He's all alone, it's so sad."

"Daniel doesn't need you to worry about him. Just focus on us."

Margaret frowned, "Raymond, I don't like hearing that. Daniel has been so good to us, helping us so much. How can you say that?"

"If I'm not mistaken, he probably already has someone."

"Did he tell you that?" Margaret asked, surprised.

Raymond smiled, taking out a cigarette but not lighting it, planning to smoke it later.

"He had a woman's perfume on him. I smelled it."

"That's great news. We should meet her and see if she's good for him."

Margaret was curious about the girl, "I wonder who the lucky girl is that he likes."

"Margaret, I think it might not be that simple. Daniel didn't admit to having a woman. Have you considered that he might be nice to you, but his attitude could be completely different with someone else?" Raymond said, biting the unlit cigarette, scoffing.
