Chapter 35 Being Followed

Margaret thought, 'Gilbert is so well-liked in the village, it must have been some kind-hearted person who helped repair it. The villagers are generally kind-hearted and simple.'

But Susan waved her hand. "No. They were buried by people from our village; we just made a small mound. A few years later, this tombstone suddenly appeared. I asked the villagers, and it wasn't anyone from our village repairing it. It must have been a friend of Gilbert's from when he was alive."

Susan added, "That person is incredibly mysterious, no one has ever seen him. The flowers in front of Gilbert's tombstone have never stopped appearing."

Hearing this, Margaret instantly deduced that the mysterious person was Raymond.

Raymond must have come to pay respects to his parents at night, which was why he had never been seen all these years.

Margaret placed the flowers in front of the tombstone.

She muttered, "Gilbert, Sandra, this is our first meeting. You probably don't know me. I am your son Raymond's wife.

"I didn't know you had died so tragically all these years, and I'm sorry I'm only visiting you now. Raymond said my father caused your deaths, but I don't believe it. Because I know my father best, he is the most compassionate and kind person in the world.

"Gilbert, Sandra, please bless me that I can find out the truth before I die and clear my father's name.

"And please bless another person."

Margaret's nose tingled, she paused, and forced down the bitterness in her heart. "Raymond wants me dead, but I don't want him to die. Please bless him, keep him safe, and let him live a long and good life.

"In 23 days, I will be able to see you in heaven."

Before leaving, Margaret bowed three times devoutly before following Susan away.

Margaret asked, "Do you know where the police station handling the Howard family fire case is?"

Margaret looked at Susan's back leading the way, her throat choked up.

Gilbert and Sandra were such good people, yet they died tragically in a fire. Was it a natural disaster or man-made? She had to find out.

In 23 days, she would die. She had to give Gilbert and Sandra justice while she still had breath in her.

Susan said, "I know, but the police station is in the county, a bit far. There are no more buses to the county now, do you want my husband to take you there?"

Margaret was very grateful. "That would be great; thank you so much."

Susan chuckled, showing a few remaining teeth, and smiled with a pursed mouth. "It's not free, though. We have a tractor that can take you to the city, but there's an extra charge."

Margaret asked, "Is a hundred dollars enough?"

"Sure, sure, you're straightforward." Susan was so happy she was beaming from ear to ear. She had earned enough money for a month's living expenses in one go today.

It was Margaret's first time riding a tractor, and the muddy road was hard to travel, making her back ache from the bumps.

Two hours later, they dropped her off at the entrance of the county police station.

Margaret thanked them, and they drove away on the tractor.

All along the way, Margaret had the feeling someone was following her. She had this feeling when the plane landed in Ironwood Lane, and she had the same feeling now.

Margaret uneasily turned her head, wanting to see clearly who was tailing her.
