Chapter 338: I'm Not Interested in You
Raymond stood in line, a striking figure that drew everyone's attention.
Even with a small white bandage on his forehead, his chiseled features looked like they were sculpted by a master artist.
Passersby couldn't help but glance back at him repeatedly.
Soon, it was Raymond's turn. He ordered a serving of fried mushrooms.
The vendor, a woman, blushed when she saw Raymond and added extra to his order.
Raymond transferred fifty dollars via his phone, took the packaged snack, thanked her, and then turned to walk down the steps.
He headed towards a parked Maserati.
"Excuse me, sir..." a girl's voice called out.
Raymond didn't stop because he didn't realize she was talking to him.
A young girl in a stylish dress with her hair in a bun, carrying a backpack, ran up to him, slightly out of breath. Her cheeks were flushed. "Sir, I was calling you. Why didn't you respond?"
Raymond glanced at her. Her youthful face and bright eyes reminded him of Margaret.
Margaret had once been just as spirited, her eyes shining with the same light.
"Do we know each other?"
"No, but we do now, right?" The girl held up her phone and a snack. "I was right behind you in line. Do you remember?"
Raymond frowned. "What do you want?"
"Do you have a girlfriend? If not, maybe we could exchange WhatsApp numbers and get to know each other." The girl smiled confidently.
Raymond's gaze turned cold. "I'm not interested. Don't follow me. Or else, don't blame me for being rude."
"Hey, it's just making a friend. Why so harsh?" The girl stomped her foot in frustration.
Raymond didn't look back. He walked straight to the Maserati, his long legs encased in tailored pants.
Alvin had already gotten out of the car and opened the door for him.
Raymond got in without a word, not sparing the girl another glance.
Alvin returned to the driver's seat and drove off.
On the way back to Everpeak Mountain City, Raymond remained silent, his face clouded, arms crossed.
Even as he leaned back in his seat, his features and body were tense.
"Mr. Raymond Howard, there will be a way to save Mrs. Margaret Howard," Alvin said, though his attempt at comfort was weak.
Raymond rubbed his head and gave a bitter smile.
His visit to David had been fruitless.
The price to save Margaret was to let her be with Daniel, and that was something he couldn't do.
Margaret was the love of his life. How could he bear to give her up to another man?
But if he didn't agree, could he convince David to help?
Raymond felt a heavy weight on his chest, making it hard to breathe.
What should he do? How could he keep Margaret and save her at the same time?
Raymond had never faced someone who wouldn't give him what he wanted. This was a first.
He had thought that reaching the pinnacle of power would allow him to protect those he cared about.
But he was wrong. Things didn't work that way.
Fate always seemed to strike him down just when he thought he had it all.
His phone suddenly rang.
Raymond answered without checking the caller ID.
"When are you coming back?" Margaret's impatient voice came through the phone.
In the past, he would have retorted sarcastically.
But now, her concern, even if it was poorly expressed, made him feel content.
Raymond's lips curved slightly. "Are you worried about me?"
"I have something to tell you. Hurry back," Margaret said coldly before hanging up.
Raymond wanted to tell her he couldn't wait to see her either.
But she had already ended the call, leaving him feeling a mix of bitterness and frustration.
Did she have so little patience for him now?
She wouldn't even let him finish a sentence?
His mind was torn. One part of him felt Margaret was being too harsh, not caring about his efforts.
He was running around for her illness, and she didn't say a single kind word.
What was he doing it for?
But another part of him reminded him that he was partly to blame for Margaret's condition.
She was a patient now. He shouldn't hold it against her.
In a relationship, someone had to give way.
Margaret had always been the one to compromise, to smooth out her rough edges for him.
Now it was his turn. It was only fair.
He shouldn't complain or resent it.
As long as she got better, he asked for nothing more.
Raymond opened the window and lit a cigarette.
The smoke helped calm his restless heart.
On the way back, Raymond made up his mind.
He couldn't give up Margaret.
If Daniel insisted on having her, he would find another way to convince David to help.
He refused to believe that without Daniel, he couldn't save her.
When they arrived at Everpeak Mountain Hospital, Alvin suggested he change his clothes, worried the snack would get cold.
Raymond refused.
"Mr. Raymond Howard, you have blood on your clothes. Don't worry Mrs. Margaret Howard," Alvin said, changing Raymond's mind.
He went to the hotel and changed into a camel-colored long coat, a white shirt underneath, and jeans that highlighted his long legs.
He wore black Martin boots and kept his simple, clear glasses.
Without his business suit, Raymond looked more relaxed and approachable.
When Raymond opened the hospital room door, holding the snack, Margaret was momentarily stunned.
She rarely saw him dressed like this.
She didn't like his business suits. She preferred him looking more down-to-earth.
Seeing the white bandage on his forehead, she pursed her pale lips.
What had happened to him? Had he gotten into a fight?
But who in Silverbrook would dare to cross him?
"You're back?" Margaret's tone was cold, masking her concern.
