Chapter 378 Preparing the Coffin
Margaret's nose tingled as she thought about all the hardships and struggles she had faced. Tears welled up in her eyes. She was awake. She had finally woken up.
She wasn't dead!
She hadn't become Raymond's bride, hadn't gone to the tea shop with him to look at each other's postcards, hadn't grown old with him, and hadn't been together forever.
This time, they hadn't missed their chance!
She felt certain that her parents were watching over them from above, which was why the surgery had gone so smoothly.
Maybe it was because of the joy, or perhaps the excitement, but Margaret's outstretched hand trembled uncontrollably, almost touching the man's hair.
Had he rushed back from abroad? Had the business deal gone well?
Margaret's eyes were red, her nose was red, and her throat ached. Her hand barely touched his hair.
He woke up, lifted his head, and looked at Margaret.
Margaret's hand froze in mid-air, the joy in her eyes vanished.
She thought she was mistaken. She blinked her dry eyes. She wasn't mistaken. The man in the chair wasn't Raymond! It was Daniel!
Raymond had broken his promise. Raymond had lied to her again. He had said that the first person she would see when she woke up would be him. Where was he? Why couldn't she see him?
She had undergone surgery, and he had left her to go abroad. Now she had made it through, the surgery was successful, but where was he?
Margaret felt a mix of grievance, fear, and heartache. Tears streamed down her face, soaking the mask of the ventilator.
Daniel thought she was in physical pain and quickly asked, "Margaret, should I call the doctor?"
Just as he was about to press the call button, Margaret grabbed his wrist.
Daniel looked at her, puzzled.
She opened her mouth, but it felt like there was a lump of lead in her throat, making it hard to speak.
She could only shake her head to indicate she wasn't in physical pain.
Then, with great effort, she wrote 'Raymond' in his palm with her finger.
Daniel's pupils contracted. Of course, she wanted to see Raymond as soon as she woke up.
His eyelids drooped, revealing a hint of disappointment and hurt.
But it quickly faded. He looked up and smiled at Margaret with a gentlemanly demeanor. "Margaret, don't worry. Listen to me. Your surgery was very successful. Your liver is now as healthy as a normal person's."
Margaret's eyelashes fluttered as she stared at him.
The surgery was successful. That was good.
She wrote Raymond's name in his palm again. She wanted to know where Raymond was, what had happened to him, and why he had broken his promise and didn't come to see her.
Didn't he know how much she needed him?
"Mr. Howard ran into some unexpected issues. As soon as he resolves them, he'll come back to see you," Daniel said vaguely after a pause.
Margaret's eyes were filled with anxiety. She opened her mouth to speak.
Her throat hurt terribly.
Daniel spoke first, "Margaret, do you trust me?"
Margaret stared at him, as if pondering the question.
She remembered Raymond had said that Daniel had arranged her surgery. They owed Daniel a huge favor. Besides, Daniel's face was sincere and honest, not like someone who would lie.
Daniel had said he was her friend. He should be someone she could trust.
Margaret nodded.
Seeing her nod, Daniel breathed a sigh of relief. "Alright, then trust what he said. Take good care of yourself, take your medicine, and when you're strong enough to get out of bed, I'll personally take you to see him."
Margaret's eyes showed a hint of disappointment. She had to wait until she could get out of bed to see him? What was Raymond doing that he couldn't show up for so long?
"Just nod if you agree."
But she had no other choice. She knew Raymond wouldn't do anything to hurt her. If he was doing this, he must have his reasons.
She had to listen. She had to get better quickly to see Raymond.
Margaret felt a pang in her heart and nodded while crying.
"Eat well and take your medicine. Raymond told me that if you throw a tantrum again, he won't see you for the rest of his life," Daniel lied.
Hearing this, Margaret quickly nodded. She wouldn't throw a tantrum. She would eat well, take her medicine, and take care of herself to see him soon.
At that moment, the door to the hospital room opened.
Alvin walked in with the food he had bought. Margaret saw him and seemed to realize something. Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Alvin in surprise.
She remembered Raymond had left with Alvin.
If Alvin was back, did that mean Raymond was back too?
Hope ignited in Margaret's eyes. She opened her mouth excitedly.
Her throat hurt, but she still asked, "Is Raymond back too? Let him come see me."
Alvin, holding the food, froze. Raymond had never left. He just didn't want Margaret to feel burdened, didn't want her to know that he had donated part of his liver to her. Raymond had lied about going abroad for a business deal.
One lie led to countless others.
"Mrs. Howard, Mr. Raymond Howard hasn't returned yet. He's still dealing with his issues and can't leave. He asked me to come back first to take care of you," Alvin lied, his throat tightening.
Margaret smiled bitterly. So that was it.
To get better quickly, Margaret was very obedient and cooperative.
She ate all the nutritious meals Alvin prepared for her.
No matter how bitter or hard to swallow the medicine David prescribed was, she took it all without complaint.
The days passed, difficult yet filled with hope.
Margaret looked forward to being able to get out of bed and walk, to getting better.
Soon, Margaret only needed injections and regular medication to recover. She could get out of bed and walk.
In the doctor's office, David looked at Alvin. "Raymond still shows no signs of waking up. In fact, his condition is deteriorating. I heard he made his will before the surgery?"
"Yes," Alvin said solemnly.
David said, "He was foresighted. It's just that his luck ran out this time. Prepare for the worst."
"Wasn't it supposed to be a week? It's only been three days," Alvin said, shocked, looking at David.
Daniel, who was also listening, frowned.
"Dr. Jones, is there no other way to save him?" Daniel asked.
David sighed. "At this rate, he won't wake up. Even the ICU can't save him. He's barely hanging on. He could die at any moment. It's better to prepare for the worst now."
"Mr. Howard has no regrets. He saved his wife's life with his own."
Alvin left the office, his eyes red. Tears streamed down his face. He quickly went to the bathroom to wash his face with cold water.
In the office, David looked at Daniel and smiled. "Daniel, your chance has come. Make the most of it."
