Chapter 388 He Is Not Important in Margaret's Eyes and Heart

Daniel carried the thermos into Margaret's hospital room and set it down in front of her.

"Got you some fish soup and porridge," he said, watching her dig in.

As Margaret ate, Daniel glanced at his own hand, red and swollen with blisters. He winced at the pain.

"Hey, you okay?" Margaret asked, noticing his discomfort.

Daniel quickly hid his hand. "Yeah, I'm good."

"Where'd you get this fish soup?"

"How's it taste?"

"It's amazing. Best fish soup I've ever had."

"Great. I'll bring you more tomorrow. They have other good stuff too."

"Isn't that too much trouble for you?" Margaret asked, feeling a bit awkward.

Daniel flashed a bright smile. "We're friends. No need to be so formal."

Margaret didn't reply, focusing on her soup.

"Afraid Mr. Howard will get jealous? Just get better soon. Once you're all healed up, my job's done, and I can hand you over to him safe and sound."

Margaret looked down. He had a point.

He really did see her as a friend. If she brought up the past, it would seem petty, like she thought she was something special. Daniel was so warm; there were probably plenty of girls who liked him.

How could he like her? She was overthinking it.

Determined to get better quickly and see Raymond, Margaret ate the food Daniel brought every day, assuming it was from a restaurant.

The nurse gave her IVs, and her hand was covered in needle marks. She was scared of the pain but never cried out.

The medicine was bitter, but she drank it without complaint.

Half a month flew by like this.

Stuck in the hospital room, bored out of her mind, she watched the heavy snow outside. It was odd; winter had long passed, and it should have been warm by now, yet it was still snowing.

Finally, Rufus came to tell her she could get out of bed.

Margaret was overjoyed. No one knew how hard it had been for her to wait for this day.

Daniel brought her food and watched her eat before he agreed to take her to see Raymond.

Her heart raced with excitement. She ate quickly, shoveling spoonfuls of porridge into her mouth without chewing properly.

Then she picked up the thermos and drank the soup.

"Slow down. Raymond's eating too. He's not going anywhere," Daniel said, his eyes darkening slightly as he smiled.

Margaret finished the soup and set the thermos on the table. "I know, but I just want to see him as soon as possible. Daniel, when you meet the girl of your dreams, you'll understand how I feel."

Daniel handed her a napkin. She thanked him and wiped her mouth.

"Take me to see him," Margaret said with a bright smile.

It had been a long time since Daniel had seen her smile like that. Before she lost her memory, she was always frowning.

That smile reminded him of when they were in elementary school, and she smiled at him the same way.

Daniel was momentarily lost in thought. Margaret waved a hand in front of his face. "Daniel?"

"Yeah?" He snapped back to reality.

Margaret's smile was radiant. "Let's go see him."

"Seeing him makes you this happy?"

"Of course. He's my husband."

"Before you lost your memory, you wanted to divorce him," Daniel teased as they walked out of the room.

Margaret paused, then explained, "That was when I was immature. Not anymore. I can't wait to be good to him. And we're going to have our wedding soon."

"A wedding?"

"Since I lost my memory, he wants to have another wedding. You have to come."

"If you want me to be the best man, I wouldn't mind," Daniel said with a smile, though his heart felt heavy. She was going to have her wedding.

He should be happy for her.

This time, the princess and the knight would have their perfect ending.

Daniel stopped at the door of a room at the end of the hallway. "He's in there. Go on in."

"Aren't you coming?"

"What, you want me to listen to your sweet nothings?" Daniel joked, then paused. "I'm single. I can't stand to see you two being all lovey-dovey. Go on."

Daniel opened the door for her, and it swung open.

"Daniel—" Margaret wanted to thank him.

Daniel knew what she wanted to say and cut her off with a smile. "Make sure your husband pays me for taking care of you. I don't work for free."

"Of course." Margaret was grateful, then went into the room.

After she closed the door, Daniel's phone rang.

He turned around, answered the call, and lit a cigarette. "David."

"Raymond and his wife are both out of danger. The hospital can handle the rest of the treatment. When are you coming back to Silverbrook?" David's voice was steady and authoritative.

Daniel held the phone. "When are you leaving?"

"Tonight. Are you going to keep watching over someone else's wife? Daniel, I'm telling you, what's the point? You've done so much, just to make Raymond's life easier. You saved Margaret, and now they're in love, and you're still single." David sighed. "But Raymond is lucky. We thought he wouldn't make it, but he pulled through."

Daniel took a drag from his cigarette. "I'll go back with you."

"Good. That's what I was thinking. You've been neglecting The Taylor Group for too long. Your dad is going to have questions. Go say goodbye to Raymond and Margaret."

"No need," Daniel said firmly.

David was surprised. "You've helped them so much, and you're just going to leave without a word?"

"I never expected anything in return. David, didn't you always say that a person should leave gracefully at the right time? I don't want to disturb them."

Daniel hung up. His goal had been to save Margaret, and now that he had, saying goodbye didn't matter. He wasn't important to Margaret. She was already distancing herself from him because of Raymond.

Knowing when to step back, he didn't want to make things difficult for Margaret. He didn't want to be caught between Raymond and Margaret, causing any discomfort. He was used to protecting her from a distance, loving deeply but with little hope.
