Chapter 485 It Was Wrong from the Beginning

Raymond glared down at her, his lips curling into a sneer. "You think you're worth anything?"

"Not worthy? Then who is? Margaret? Raymond, you can't seriously believe you and Margaret can go back to how things were," Sarah spat, lying on the ground, her eyes filled with mockery as her fingers clawed at the blood on the floor.

Raymond's brow furrowed slightly.

His leather shoe pressed down on her hand again, but she just laughed. "Even if you kill me, you won't be able to go back to the past with her. If I remember right, Margaret's lost her memory again, hasn't she? She's forgotten everyone, including all the pain you caused her. Even if you two patch things up, what does it matter?"

"There's always gonna be a ticking time bomb between you two. Without me, she'll still get her memory back. Guess what she'll remember? Who caused the downfall of the Hughes family? Who was responsible for her parents' tragic deaths? Raymond, you and her are never gonna work out." Sarah laughed maniacally, her arrogance peaking.

Her laughter made Raymond uneasy.

Yes, Margaret had lost her memory. The Hughes family's decline, he hadn't killed Margaret's parents, but they died because of him. He couldn't escape responsibility.

Last time, when Margaret had a liver transplant, she regained her memory and jumped off the balcony of the villa.

It was indeed a ticking time bomb.

It would blow their future to pieces.

"Shut up!" Raymond's eyes flashed with cold light, and he increased the pressure of his shoe.

But she continued, "What? Feeling guilty? Scared? Raymond, what if Margaret finds out you avenged the wrong people? Her parents died so unjustly, can you two still be okay?"

"What do you mean? Who started that fire?" Raymond realized something was off, and he crouched down, roughly lifting her chin.

Sarah's face was covered in blood, and she suddenly fell silent.

"Speak. If you tell me, maybe I'll be in a good mood and let you go." He tightened his grip.

She endured the pain, defiant and provocative. "Mr. Howard, now you're begging me, asking me questions. You're threatening me? I'm so scared. I'm already a fugitive, do you think I'm afraid of death?"

Raymond's hand suddenly clamped around her neck, his veins bulging. "Tell me, did you start that fire?"

"Want to know? I'm not telling you. Why don't you beg me? Say you love me, even if it's a lie, just say you love me a little bit. Then I'll tell you the truth." Sarah's smile faded, and she spoke seriously.

Even if it was a lie, she wanted to hear him say it.

Raymond was completely enraged, his hand tightening. "Are you looking for death?"

"I'm already dying, Mr. Howard. If you want to know, just say you love me. It's just words, and you can't even do that? Your parents weren't killed by Marlon."

"What did you say?"

"Raymond, you don't want to lie to me, right? Then go ahead and strangle me. I won't tell you the truth even if I die." Sarah smirked, raising her eyebrows in pain. "I want you and Margaret to never find peace. I want you both to lose sleep for the rest of your lives. Maybe your parents in heaven will find out you wrongly accused the person who donated five million dollars to you, and you caused their family's ruin. Your parents were so kind, do you think they'd crawl out of their graves to strangle you?"

So the Hughes family had always been innocent, and he had avenged the wrong people.

The Hughes family had treated him well, yet they met such a tragic end.

Raymond was both angry and sad. Although he didn't know the whole truth, he was certain Sarah was involved.

Seeing Sarah about to suffocate, he suddenly released her and stood up. "Dying won't be that easy."

Raymond turned to Alvin. "Take Sarah back to Silverbrook and find a way to make her talk. I'll have the prison interrogate Percy thoroughly."

"Mr. Howard, are you heading back to Silverbrook early?" Alvin asked.

Raymond replied in a deep voice, "I'm going to bring Margaret home."

"Mrs. Howard will be happy to see you," Alvin smiled.

They walked out of the abandoned factory.

The rain had stopped.

The air was filled with the scent of earth and the decay of dead grass.

Raymond walked to the black sedan, opened the door, and sat in the driver's seat. He rolled down the window and lit a cigarette.

Damn it, he had avenged the wrong people.

He had been misled, completely misled by Sarah.

From the moment he was introduced to Marlon under false pretenses, he had been deceived.

If it weren't for the hatred, the Hughes family were actually good people.

Sarah had introduced him to the philanthropist Marlon.

His tuition and living expenses were all funded by Marlon.

When he was dating Margaret, countless people looked at him coldly, saying he had ulterior motives.

He had his pride. If it weren't for revenge, he might have broken up with Margaret long ago.

But Margaret and Marlon never judged him. Marlon always believed in his abilities, bringing him into the Hughes Group and patting his shoulder.

"Raymond, although your family background is a bit lacking compared to Margaret's, it's a new era now. There's no such thing as matching social status. When I married my wife, I had nothing, and look at us now, we're happy. Margaret likes you, so don't let her down or hurt her. When you succeed, I'll step down and hand the Hughes Group over to you."

"Mr. Hughes, you trust me that much? You don't see me as an outsider? You don't plan to hand it over to Margaret?"

"You two are getting married, we're all family. Giving the Hughes Group to you is also a bit selfish."

"What do you mean?"

"Margaret grew up under my protection, like a flower in a greenhouse. If possible, I want her to live a carefree and happy life like her mother. Making money and supporting the family is our job as men. Besides, running a company requires decisiveness and a strong hand. Margaret is too kind, the Hughes Group wouldn't last long under her."

Raymond remembered last Christmas, Marlon glaring at him angrily, his eyes fierce, swinging his cane at him, shouting. From his lip movements, Raymond knew Marlon was calling him ungrateful.

He used to not understand why Marlon fell from the balcony, even though he held Marlon's hand tightly, it was to no avail.

Now Raymond seemed to understand.
