Chapter 280 How Could She Know About His Existence

Margaret heard it was Raymond calling and her brow furrowed involuntarily. "Don't let him come over."

When Marlon was buried, Raymond had already had an unpleasant encounter with her.

Now that Nancy was in this state, she didn't want Raymond to disturb her.

Nancy hated Raymond the most. If he came, she would be unhappy.

Margaret's words made Alvin pause. He looked at the phone flashing in his palm and pressed his lips together. "Mrs. Howard, I'll step outside to take this call."

Alvin took the phone and, with long strides, walked outside the funeral home.

The snow outside was falling even harder.

"Mr. Howard." Alvin answered the call and quickly explained, "I was busy just now and didn't see your call. Please forgive me."

Raymond was already in a bad mood. Alvin used to answer immediately.

This time, Alvin made him wait so long; how could he not be angry?

But considering the special circumstances today, he suppressed his displeasure and asked in a deep voice, "How is Margaret doing?"

"The situation is very bad. Mrs. Hughes fainted on the way back. We transferred her to Silverbrook Hospital, and she passed away."

Alvin hesitated for a moment but decided to tell Raymond the truth: "We are now with Mrs. Howard, at the crematorium, cremating Mrs. Hughes."

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

Raymond hadn't expected that Nancy would die after Marlon.

In all his life, he had never seen such a strange event.

Having lost her grandparents early and now her parents, Margaret had no other relatives; like him, she had become an orphan with no parents, leaving her undoubtedly heartbroken.

"Mr. Howard, if you have no other instructions, may I hang up? Mrs. Howard is still in the cremation room, and I'm a bit worried." Alvin asked respectfully, holding the phone.

Raymond's voice came through the phone: "Wait for me. I'm coming over now."

Margaret was so isolated now, and he had to be by her side as her husband.

"Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard is not in a good mood and doesn't really want to see you right now." Alvin said, bracing himself.

The phone fell silent again.

Raymond could understand that Margaret didn't want to see him. Nancy had opposed him during her lifetime, always instigating Margaret to argue and divorce him.

In death, she certainly wouldn't want to see him either.

"Take good care of her. Make sure she gets home safely." Raymond said only this and then hung up.

Alvin shook his head, holding the phone, and returned to the funeral home.

In the time he had been outside, Nancy's body had already been cremated.

Margaret watched as the uniformed staff member took a hammer and smashed Nancy's ashes into fine powder.

She chose an urn of the same style and color so that her parents could be together underground, never to be separated.

"Ms. Hughes, don't be too sad. You are truly pitiful." The staff member, a middle-aged man, handed the urn to Margaret.

Margaret took it, feeling its weight, like her current state of mind.

Leaving the crematorium, Alvin and Daniel silently accompanied her, not saying a word.

"Mr. Taylor, if you have something to do, go ahead. I'll stay with Mrs. Howard." Alvin said to Daniel, speaking first.

Because he felt that Daniel had ulterior motives towards Margaret, he didn't want Daniel to be alone with her.

Before Daniel responded, Margaret lifted her eyelids and looked at Daniel. "Alvin's right. You've already paid your respects to my father. My mother knows your intentions. Don't waste time on unrelated people and matters."

"I have nothing to do today. Besides, Mrs. Hughes just entrusted you to me. I need to make sure you get home safely before I can be at ease." Daniel lied. He hadn't met with David; he had come here.

When he went back, he would surely get a scolding from Joe.

But now he just wanted to stay by Margaret's side, watching her from a distance, as long as she was safe.

Margaret said no more.

On the way there, Alvin drove.

Daniel used a shovel to dig another pit beside Marlon's grave.

Margaret lowered her head, kissed the urn, and murmured, "Mom, I am bringing you to reunite with Dad. Be well in heaven."

'Soon, our family will be reunited in heaven. Wait for me.' Margaret thought to herself.

Margaret walked to the pit, half-kneeling in the snow.

The snow had gotten much deeper than before.

She bent down and placed the urn in the pit as if it were a rare treasure, slowly and carefully.

Margaret personally used the shovel to cover the urn with soil.

As the soil fell bit by bit, it buried not just Nancy but also her hopes and precious memories of the past twenty years.

Margaret had never done heavy labor; the shovel gave her blisters, which burst, and blood oozed out. But she was too numb to feel the pain.

Before leaving, she knelt before her parents.

In her heart, she murmured, 'Dad, Mom, I am leaving. Don't worry, we will meet again soon.'

On the way back, Daniel and Alvin switched places, with Daniel driving.

Margaret was taken to the Hughes Manor. She thanked them, got out of the car, and walked towards the villa.

Daniel kept watching Margaret's back.

Alvin frowned and warned him: "Mr. Taylor, Mrs. Howard is married. No matter how much you look, she's not yours."

Daniel withdrew his gaze and looked at Alvin. "You are just like Raymond. Don't worry, Margaret and I are just good friends."

"Mr. Taylor, we are both men. Do you believe your own words? The way you look at Mrs. Howard is not innocent. Mrs. Hughes was confused by illness and spoke nonsense. You are a smart man; don't be foolish." Alvin sneered.

Daniel squinted, sizing up Alvin for a long time.

He sneered. "I knew her long before Raymond. If I wanted to make a move, wouldn't I have had more opportunities than him?"

Alvin was stunned by this. "Mrs. Howard has never mentioned you."

"That's none of your concern. Go back and tell Raymond, that if he doesn't cherish Margaret, he'll regret it when the time comes." Daniel said coldly, getting out of Alvin's car.

Turning around, Daniel's face was full of loneliness.

Indeed, he had known Margaret for many years, but she didn't remember him. They had never spoken a word. He had always watched her from afar, silently. How could she know of his existence?
