Chapter 610 Daniel, Stop Kissing Me
"Thanks, babe."
"Who's your babe? Stop calling me that, or I'll knock you out," Lyric snapped, but her fingers were already working to get his blood-stained army green coat off.
She tossed the coat to the floor and then started undoing his tie.
As she peeled off his blood-soaked dark shirt, it stuck to the wounds on his back, making him wince in pain.
"Serves you right. You should've bailed when you had the chance. You deserve this," she said, but her touch grew gentler as she continued.
His entire back was a mess of blood and torn flesh. Zephyr had really done a number on him.
Lyric was stunned and pulled out some cotton swabs from the first aid kit to disinfect his wounds and apply ointment. "You should leave. There's no future for us. If you stay, my dad will kill you. You know how he is."
"If I can't be with you, what's the point of living?" he said, lying on the seat cushion. The temperature in the car was just right, and he was starting to feel warm again.
"I'm serious. This isn't a joke."
"Lyric, I'm serious too. I know I treated you badly before. I don't blame Mr. Vaughn. If I were in his shoes, I'd be even harsher if someone disrespected my daughter. I'm grateful he hasn't gone after The Taylor Group yet," Daniel said, looking at her with guilt in his eyes.
She paused for a moment, holding the cotton swab. "If you stay, The Taylor Group will really go under."
"Then let it go under."
"Are you nuts?"
Lyric frowned and applied the ointment a bit more forcefully.
Daniel gritted his teeth but didn't make a sound. "Lyric, not all parents care about their kids. Yours do, so you worry about them. But my life has been a struggle for the past thirty years. My father never wanted to acknowledge me. He only took me back because a car accident killed his wife and kids. I don't care if The Taylor Group goes bankrupt."
She knew he was an illegitimate child and had a tough life, but hearing it from him still surprised and pained her.
"He humiliated you and gave you a check to leave. If the company goes bankrupt, it's his karma."
Lyric finished applying the ointment and helped him put his shirt back on. She looked up at him. "Daniel, if you're only sticking around out of guilt, you don't have to."
"What?" He frowned.
She sighed, her expression complicated. "If you're doing this because I fell down the stairs, lost the baby, and can't have children, you don't need to."
"Lyric—"
"I've seen a doctor since I came back. My body has recovered. So you don't need to feel guilty. I'll get married and have kids someday. You should go."
Daniel's eyes softened, and he smiled.
Seeing him so happy made her feel a pang of sadness. Was he really only sticking around out of guilt?
Now that she had said this, did he feel relieved?
She was relieved she hadn't defied her family for him. Otherwise, she'd be the one everyone laughed at.
She screwed the cap back on the ointment and put everything back in the first aid kit.
This was for the best. They were never meant to be. It was just a doomed relationship.
"Go back to Silverbrook tomorrow. We're not right for each other." She reached for the car door.
A large hand grabbed her arm.
He pulled her against the car door.
Before she could react, he cupped her face and kissed her passionately.
It was the second time he had kissed her today.
The first time was when he tried to put her shoes on, and she resisted.
Lyric was annoyed and tried to push him away.
But as she raised her hand, he opened his eyes, red-rimmed, and pleaded, "Lyric, don't hit me. I'm still hurt. If you really want to hit me, wait until I'm better. Then you can hit me ten times harder."
"Who wants to see you again?" Lyric said, but she lowered her arm and didn't hit him.
He smiled, happy.
As he leaned in, she blocked his lips with her hand. "No more kissing, Daniel."
"Okay, I won't kiss you. Just let me say a few things."
"I need to go. If we get caught, it'll be bad."
"I'm not afraid."
"I'm worried about myself, not you," she said stubbornly.
He took her hand from his lips and kissed it gently, smiling at her. "Lyric, I'll keep it short. Listen carefully. Everything I'm going through now is my choice. You don't need to worry about me."
"I'm not worried about you."
"Good. Keep being your little princess. As long as you're not worried about me, I'm fine. And about what you said, that I'm only sticking around out of guilt, that's not true."
"Isn't it?"
"Of course not. Maybe it was at first, but now I can promise you, my heart and eyes are only for you, Lyric. Since I met you, I can't see anyone else. I thought I liked Margaret, but meeting you showed me I was wrong. I was just grateful to her for helping me."
Lyric covered her ears and turned away. "I don't want to hear this."
He gently pulled her hands away from her ears. "Don't lie to yourself. I know you want to hear it. I'll show your parents how much I care about you and marry you with their blessing. Wait for me, okay?"
"Talk nonsense! Let go of me. I need to go back." She tried to push him away.
Despite his injuries, his grip was strong. He held her tightly and leaned in. "Forgive me, and I'll let you go."
"Daniel, if I had known you'd be like this, I wouldn't have come to treat your wounds." She was getting impatient and glared at him.
He laughed. "It's too late for regrets."
"Forgive me, please?"
"Let go."
He kissed her again, more passionately. Her face turned red, her heart raced, and she felt like it would burst out of her chest.
"Daniel! Enough, I need to go!"
But he didn't let go, kissing her until she was breathless.
"Okay, okay, I forgive you! Just stop kissing me!"
