Chapter 417: This Is Your Last Chance

Raymond wanted to say more, but Daniel had reached his limit, his face growing colder by the second. "Raymond, Margaret's given up so much for you. How can you just push her away when things get tough?"

"Every couple fights. When you argue, you need to make it up to her, show her you care. Do you think pushing her to me will make her happy?" Daniel toyed with the glass of whiskey in his hand before downing it in one gulp. "And let's be clear, I'm not a good guy. You don't need to suck up to me. I stay out of your relationship because Margaret chose you. It has nothing to do with my character or you."

Daniel stood up, his defined fingers picking up the black coat draped over the sofa and slinging it over his arm. "Life's tough for everyone. I was born a bastard, not much better off than you. This is your last warning, Raymond. If Margaret truly gives up on you and I step in, you won't even have a place to cry."

Raymond's grip on his glass tightened, and he looked up. "Are you pitying me?"

"As long as her heart's still with you, put in some effort, and getting back together is just a matter of time. But if you hurt her so much that she chooses me, then you'll be the loser." Daniel scoffed, picking up his keys from the table. "Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, why not put some effort into winning her back? What do you think?"

Daniel shook his head at Raymond and left the room.

Raymond rubbed his temples. Comfort her. He wanted to comfort her. He had tried many times. But ever since Margaret lost her memory, none of his efforts worked. Margaret wouldn't listen to anything he said. She only wished for his death.

Who wouldn't want to live a good life with the woman they love? Especially when he was a terminally ill patient. But Margaret wouldn't give him that chance.

His phone suddenly rang. He picked it up and saw it was Mary calling. As soon as he answered, Mary's anxious voice came through the receiver. "Mr. Howard, where are you? I don't know what to do!"

"What happened?" Raymond felt suffocated hearing there was another problem. He tugged at his tie.

Mary was crying. "Mrs. Howard isn't eating. She hasn't eaten all day. I asked her what she wanted, but she ignored me. The food I brought in is untouched. I've tried everything, even begged on my knees, but she won't even look at me. Mr. Raymond Howard, what should I do? Mrs. Margaret Howard just had surgery; she can't go without food!"

Raymond downed his drink, the alcohol burning as it went down, making him feel even worse. Mary's crying was getting on his nerves. But he couldn't be annoyed with her; it wasn't her fault.

"Wait for me. I'm coming back now."

A Bentley sped down the dark road, the atmosphere inside the car heavy and suffocating. He lowered the window halfway, hoping the cool breeze would help, but it only felt bone-chilling.

Raymond was exhausted and frustrated. He didn't know what Margaret wanted or how long this would go on. He had gone to great lengths to make her forget, even donating part of his liver, not for her to hold a grudge like this.

It was one thing if she didn't appreciate it, but she couldn't keep hurting herself.

Maybe he was driving too fast, eager to see the woman he loved, but the car broke down halfway.

Raymond punched the steering wheel in frustration. He didn't even feel the pain.

"Drive to the address I sent you and call a tow truck," he texted.

After sending the message, he unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. Leaning against the door, he looked at the scattered shadows on the road and sighed.

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, took one out, and lit it, taking a drag. He stood there for a few minutes.

"Raymond—" a soft voice called out.

He looked up to see Sarah in a convertible. Sarah's hair was styled in loose waves, and she wore light makeup, a clear change from her previous look.

"Your face is healed?"

"Yeah, Hubert fixed it. Thanks to you, I won't be scarred for life," Sarah said gratefully, then changed the subject. "What are you doing here alone?"

Raymond glanced at his car. "It broke down."

"Where are you headed? I can give you a ride."

"No need, Alvin will be here soon." Raymond held his cigarette, his face cold as he refused.

Sarah frowned. "Raymond, we're just friends. You've helped me so much, and I want to repay you. Are you not even going to give me that chance?"

"That's not what I meant."

"Then let me give you a ride. Aren't you worried Margaret will think you're up to something if you're late? She's very insecure."

Raymond's frown eased a bit at that. But thinking of Margaret, he still shook his head. "No need."

"Are you worried Margaret will be jealous? How would she know? We won't tell her. I heard from Hubert that Margaret's depression is quite severe. You should get back to her soon; people with depression shouldn't be left alone."

"Alright, thank you."

Raymond put out his cigarette and walked to the car's back door. As he reached for the door handle, Sarah laughed playfully. "Raymond, do you think I'm only good enough to be your driver now?"

"That's not what I meant."

"It sure seems like it. Raymond, you broke our promise and fell in love with Margaret. I don't blame you. But I did give you five million dollars. Without me, you wouldn't have known Margaret's preferences and won her over so quickly."

Sarah laughed bitterly. "If it weren't for me creating opportunities for you two, who knows if you would have even met. Five million dollars is no small amount. I don't expect you to repay me, but I do expect some respect. Treating me like your driver is a bit much."

Raymond felt guilty.

Sarah's fingers drummed on the steering wheel as she turned to look at him, tears in her eyes. "I ruined my face to save you. Do you really think I'd try to come between you and Margaret? I'm not that bad, Raymond. Why can't I sit in the front? We're innocent, and everyone can see that. Why do you treat me like a plague? Raymond, you're being unfair. Margaret is a person, and so am I."

Her words, accompanied by tears, made Raymond's guilt peak. "Fine, I'll sit in the front."
